BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong>: The Jack Russell Terrier<\/span>
originated in England in the 1800\u2019s due to the efforts of the Reverend<\/span>
John Russell. He developed a strain of Fox Terriers to suit his needs<\/span>
for a dog to run with his foxhounds and go to ground to bolt the fox<\/span>
and other quarry from their dens. Two varieties evolved with<\/span>
basically similar Standards except for differences, mainly in height<\/span>
and proportions. The taller, more squarely built dog is now known as<\/span>
the Parson Russell Terrier and the shorter, slightly longer<\/span>
proportioned do, is known as the Jack Russell Terrier.<\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: A strong, active, lithe working<\/span>
Terrier of great character with flexible body of medium length. His<\/span>
smart movement matches his keen expression. Tail docking is<\/span>
optional and the coat may be smooth, rough or broken.<\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS:<\/span><\/strong>
The overall dog is longer than high, i.e. rectangular. The depth of the<\/span>
body from the withers to the brisket should equal the length of<\/span>
foreleg from elbows to the ground. The girth behind the elbows<\/span>
should be about 40 to 43 cms. <\/span>
BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: A lively, alert and active<\/span>
Terrier with a keen, intelligent expression. Bold and fearless, friendly<\/span>
but quietly confident.<\/span>
HEAD<\/span><\/strong>
CRANIAL REGION:<\/span>
Skull: The skull should be flat and of moderate width gradually<\/span>
decreasing in width to the eyes and tapering to a wide muzzle.<\/span>
Stop: Well defined but not over pronounced.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION:<\/span>
Nose: Black.<\/span>
Muzzle: The length from the stop to the nose should be slightly<\/span>
shorter than from the stop to the occiput.<\/span>
Lips: Tight-fitting and pigmented black.<\/span>
Jaws\/Teeth: Very strong, deep, wide and powerful. Strong teeth<\/span>
closing to a scissor bite.<\/span>
Cheeks: The cheek muscles should be well developed.<\/span>
Eyes: Small dark and with keen expression. Must not be prominent<\/span>
and eyelids should fit closely. The eyelid rims should be pigmented<\/span>
black. Almond shaped.<\/span>
Ears: Button or dropped of good texture and great mobility.<\/span>
NECK<\/strong>: Strong and clean allowing head to be carried with poise.<\/span>
BODY<\/strong>:<\/span>
Back: Level. The length from the withers to the root of tail slightly<\/span>
greater than the height from the withers to the ground.<\/span>
Loin: The loins should be short, strong and deeply muscled.<\/span>
Chest: Chest deep rather than wide, with good clearance from the<\/span>
ground, enabling the brisket to be located at the height mid-way<\/span>
between the ground and the withers. Ribs should be well sprung from<\/span>
the spine, flattening on the sides so that the girth behind the elbows<\/span>
can be spanned by two hands – about 40 cm to 43 cm. Point of<\/span>
sternum clearly in front of the point of shoulder. <\/span>
TAIL<\/strong>: May droop at rest. When moving should be erect and if<\/span>
docked the tip should be on the same level as ears.<\/span>
LIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
FOREQUARTERS:<\/span>
Shoulder: Well sloped back and not heavily loaded with muscle.<\/span>
Upper arm: Of sufficient length and angulation to ensure elbows are<\/span>
set under the body.<\/span>
Forelegs: Straight in bone from the elbows to the toes whether<\/span>
viewed from the front or the side.<\/span>
Forefeet: Round, hard, padded, not large, toes moderately arched,<\/span>
turned neither in nor out.<\/span>
HINDQUARTERS:<\/span>
General appearance: Strong and muscular, balanced in proportion to<\/span>
the shoulder.<\/span>
Stifle (Knee): Well angulated.<\/span>
Hock joint: Low set.<\/span>
Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Parallel when viewed from behind while<\/span>
in free standing position.<\/span>
Hind feet: Round, hard, padded, not large, toes moderately arched,<\/span>
turned neither in nor out.<\/span>
GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: True, free and springy.<\/span>
COAT<\/span><\/strong>
Hair: May be smooth, broken or rough. Must be weatherproof.<\/span>
Coats should not be altered (stripped out) to appear smooth or<\/span>
broken.<\/span>
Colour: White must predominate with black and\/or tan markings.<\/span>
The tan markings can be from the lightest tan to the richest tan<\/span>
(chestnut). <\/span>
SIZE AND WEIGHT<\/strong>:<\/span>
Ideal Height at the withers: 25 cms to 30 cms.<\/span>
Weight: Being the equivalent of 1 kg to each 5 cms in height, i.e. a<\/span>
25 cms high dog should weigh approximately 5 kgs and a 30 cms<\/span>
high dog should weigh 6 kgs.<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
upon the health and welfare of the dog and on its ability to perform<\/span>
its traditional work.<\/span>
\u2022 Lack of true terrier characteristics.<\/span>
\u2022 Lack of balance, i.e. exaggeration of any points.<\/span>
\u2022 Sluggish or unsound movement.<\/span>
\u2022 Faulty mouth.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural<\/span>
abnormalities shall be disqualified.<\/span>
N.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum (this expression is obligatory in every<\/span>
standard).<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span>
conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
