BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong> : Salukis vary in type and the<\/span>
variation is desired and typical for the breed. The reason for the<\/span>
variation is the special place held by the Saluki in the Arab tradition<\/span>
and the immense size of the Middle East area where the Saluki has<\/span>
been used as a hound of the chase for thousands of years. Originally<\/span>
each tribe had Salukis best suited for hunting the particular game in<\/span>
its own area, but by Middle East tradition, Salukis are not bought or<\/span>
sold but presented as marks of honour. It follows that those<\/span>
presented as such to Europeans and brought to Europe came from a<\/span>
wide variation of terrain and climate and vary accordingly. The<\/span>
British 1923 standard was the first official European breed standard<\/span>
for the Saluki and was drawn up to cover all these original types of<\/span>
Saluki.<\/span><\/p>\n

GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : The whole appearance of this breed<\/span>
should give an impression of grace and symmetry and of great speed<\/span>
and endurance coupled with strength and activity.<\/span>
Smooth variety : the points should be the same with the exception of<\/span>
the coat which has no feathering. <\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> :<\/span>
\u2022 The length of the body (from point of shoulder to point of<\/span>
buttock) is approximately equal to the height at the withers,<\/span>
although the dog often gives the impression of being longer<\/span>
than he really is.<\/span>
BEHAVIOUR TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : Reserved with strangers, but<\/span>
not nervous or aggressive. Dignified, intelligent and independent.<\/span>
HEAD<\/strong> : Long and narrow, the whole showing nobility.<\/span>
CRANIAL REGION :<\/span>
Skull : Moderately wide between ears, not domed.<\/span>
Stop : Not pronounced.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION :<\/span>
Nose : Black or liver brown.<\/span>
Jaws\/Teeth : Teeth and jaws are strong with a perfect, regular and<\/span>
complete scissor bite.<\/span>
Eyes : Dark to hazel and bright, large and oval, but not prominent.<\/span>
The expression should be dignified and gentle with faithful and farseeing eyes.<\/span>
Ears : Long and covered with long silky hair, set on high, mobile,<\/span>
hanging close to the skull.<\/span>
NECK<\/strong> : Long, supple and well muscled.<\/span>
BODY<\/strong> :<\/span>
Back : Fairly broad.<\/span>
Loin : Slightly arched and well muscled.<\/span>
Croup : Hipbones set wide apart.<\/span>
Chest : Deep, long and moderately narrow. Neither barrel ribbed nor<\/span>
slab sided.<\/span>
Underline : Well tucked up.<\/span><\/p>\n

TAIL<\/strong> : Long, set on low and carried naturally in a curve, well<\/span>
feathered on the underside with long silky hair, not bushy. <\/span>
In adults not carried above the topline except in play. Tip reaching at<\/span>
least to the point of hock.<\/span>
LIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
FOREQUARTERS :<\/span>
Shoulders : Well laid back, well muscled without being coarse.<\/span>
Upper arm : Approximately equal in length to the shoulder blade and<\/span>
forming a good angle with it.<\/span>
Forearm : Long and straight from elbow to wrist.<\/span>
Pasterns : Strong and flexible, slightly sloping.<\/span>
Front feet : Feet of moderate length, toes long and well arched, not<\/span>
splayed, but at the same time not cat-footed; the whole being strong<\/span>
and supple; feathered between the toes.<\/span>
HINDQUARTERS :<\/span>
General appearance : Strong, showing galloping and jumping power.<\/span>
Upper and lower thighs : Well developed.<\/span>
Stifle : Moderately bent.<\/span>
Hocks : Well let down.<\/span>
Hind feet : Similar to front feet.<\/span>
GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong> : smooth, flowing and effortless at trot.<\/span>
Light and lifting showing both reach and drive without hackney<\/span>
action or pounding.<\/span>
COAT<\/strong> :<\/span>
HAIR : Smooth and of a soft, silky texture, feathering on the legs<\/span>
and at the back of thighs, feathering may be present on the throat in<\/span>
adults, puppies may have slight woolly feather on thighs and<\/span>
shoulders. The smooth variety has no feathering.<\/span>
COLOUR : Any colour or combination of colours is permissible.<\/span>
Brindles are undesirable. <\/span>
SIZE<\/strong> :<\/span>
Height at withers : Average between 58 – 71 cm (23-28 inches)<\/span>
bitches proportionally smaller.<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong> : Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical of behavioural abnormalities<\/span>
shall be disqualified.<\/span>
N.B<\/strong>.:<\/span>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed<\/span>
typical conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
