BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong> : Around the turn of the<\/span>
century a dwarf Schnauzer from the Frankfurt\/Main area went on his<\/span>
way, then still described as a rough haired Zwergpinscher (Miniature<\/span>
Pinscher). Due to the different shapes, sizes and types and the<\/span>
muddle of harsh, soft and silky coat textures, it was no easy task to<\/span>
evolve a small dog with the appearance and the characteristic<\/span>
qualities of his bigger brother, the Schnauzer.<\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : Small, strong, stocky rather than<\/span>
slim, rough coated, elegant. A reduced image of the Schnauzer<\/span>
without the drawback of a dwarfed appearance.<\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> :<\/span>
\u2022 Square build in which the height at the withers is nearly equal to<\/span>
the body length.<\/span>
\u2022 The length of the head (measured from the tip of the nose to the<\/span>
occiput) corresponds to half the length of the topline (measured<\/span>
from the withers to the set on of the tail). <\/span>
BEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : His nature is similar to that of<\/span>
the Schnauzer and is determined by the temperament and the<\/span>
behaviour of a small dog. Intelligence, fearlessness, endurance and<\/span>
alertness make the Miniature Schnauzer an agreeable house dog as<\/span>
well as a watch and companion dog which can be kept even in a<\/span>
small appartment without problems.<\/span>
HEAD<\/span><\/strong>
CRANIAL REGION<\/span>
Skull : Strong, long without markedly protruding occiput. The head<\/span>
should be in keeping with the dog\u2019s force. The forehead is flat,<\/span>
without wrinkles and parallel to the bridge of nose.<\/span>
Stop: Appears well defined due to the brows<\/span>
FACIAL REGION<\/span>
Nose : Well developed nose leather, always black.<\/span>
Muzzle : Ending in a blunt wedge. Bridge of nose straight.<\/span>
Lips : Black, smoot and tight-fitting to the jaws. Corners of lips<\/span>
closed.<\/span>
Jaws\/Teeth : Strong upper and lower jaw. The complete scissor bite<\/span>
(42 pure white teeth according to the dentition formula), is strongly<\/span>
developed and firmly closing. The chewing muscles are strongly<\/span>
developed but the cheeks must not interfere with the reactangular<\/span>
shape of the head (with the beard).<\/span>
Eyes: Medium sized, oval, facing foreward, dark with lively<\/span>
expression. Eyelids close fitting.<\/span>
Ears : Drop ears, set high, V-shaped with inner edges lying close to<\/span>
the cheeks, evenly carried , turned forward towards temples. Folds<\/span>
parallel, should not be above the top of the skull..<\/span>
NECK<\/strong> : The strong, muscular neck is nobly arched, blending<\/span>
smoothly into the withers.<\/span>
Strongly set on, slim, nobly curved, corresponding to the dog\u2019s force.<\/span>
Throat skin tight-fitting without folds.<\/span>
BODY<\/span><\/strong>
Topline : Slightly sloping from withers towards rear. <\/span>
Withers: Forming the highest point in topline.<\/span>
Back: Strong, short and taut.<\/span>
Loins : Short, strong and deep. The distance from the last rib to the<\/span>
hip is short to make the dog appear compact.<\/span>
Croup : Slightly rounded and imperceptibly blending into tail set on.<\/span>
Chest : Moderately broad, oval in diameter, reaching to the elbows.<\/span>
The forechest is distinctly marked by the point of the sternum.<\/span>
Underline and belly : Flanks not too tucked up, forming a well<\/span>
curved line with the underside of the ribcage.<\/span>
TAIL<\/strong> : Natural; a sabre or sickle carriage is sought after.<\/span>
LIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
FOREQUARTERS :<\/span>
General appearance: Seen from the front, the front legs are strong,<\/span>
straight and not close together. Seen from the side, the forearms are<\/span>
straight.<\/span>
Shoulders: The shoulder blade lies close against the rib cage and is<\/span>
well muscled on both sides of the shoulder bone, protruding over the<\/span>
points of the thoracic vertebrae. As sloping as possible and well laid<\/span>
back, forming an angle of appr. 50\u00b0 to the horizontal.<\/span>
Upper arm: Lying close to the body, strong and well muscled,<\/span>
forming an angle of 95\u00b0 to 105\u00b0 to the shoulder blade.<\/span>
Elbows: Close fitting, turning neither in nor out.<\/span>
Forearm : Viewed from all sides, completely straight, strongly<\/span>
developed and well muscled.<\/span>
Carpal joint: Strong, firm, barely standing out against the structure of<\/span>
the forearm.<\/span>
Pastern : Seen from the front, vertical. Seen from the side slightly<\/span>
sloping towards the ground, strong and slightly springy.<\/span>
Forefeet : Short and round. Toes well-knit and arched (cat foot) with<\/span>
short dark nails and resistant pads.<\/span>
HINDQUARTERS :<\/span>
General appearance: Standing obliquely when seen from the side,<\/span>
standing parallel but not close together when seen from the rear. <\/span>
Upper thigh : Moderately long, broad and strongly muscled.<\/span>
Stifle :Turning neither in nor out.<\/span>
Lower thigh : Long, strong and sinewy, running into a strong hock.<\/span>
Hock : Very well angulated, strong, firm, turning neither in nor out.<\/span>
Metatarsus : Short, vertical to the ground.<\/span>
Hind feet : Toes short, arched and well-knit. Nails short and black.<\/span>
GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Flexible, elegant, agile, free and ground<\/span>
covering. The forelegs swinging as far forward as possible, the hind<\/span>
legs, ground covering and springy, provide the necessary drive. The<\/span>
front leg of one side and the hind leg of the other side move forward<\/span>
at the same time. The back, the ligaments and the joints are firm.<\/span>
SKIN<\/strong> : Tight fitting over the whole body.<\/span>
COAT<\/span><\/strong>
HAIR : The coat should be wiry, harsh and dense. It consists of a<\/span>
dense undercoat and a not too short top coat, lying close to the body.<\/span>
The top coat is rough and sufficiently long to allow the checking of<\/span>
its texture; it is neither bristly nor wavy. The hair on the limbs tends<\/span>
to be less harsh. Coat short on forehead and ears. Typical<\/span>
characteristics are the not too soft beard on the muzzle and the bushy<\/span>
eyebrows which slightly shade the eyes.<\/span>
COLOUR<\/span>
\u2022 Pure black with black undercoat.<\/span>
\u2022 Pepper and Salt.<\/span>
\u2022 Black\/Silver.<\/span>
\u2022 Pure white with white undercoat.<\/span>
When breeding Pepper and Salt, the aim is a medium shading with<\/span>
evenly distributed, well pigmented, pepper colouring and grey<\/span>
undercoat. The shades from dark iron grey to silver grey are all<\/span>
permitted. In all colour variations there must be a dark mask, which<\/span>
should adapt harmoniously to the respective colour. Distinct light<\/span>
markings on head, chest and limbs are undesirable. <\/span>
For the Black\/Silver colour, the aim in breeding is a black top coat<\/span>
with black undercoat, white markings over the eyes, on the cheeks, at<\/span>
the beard, at the throat, in two divided triangles at the front of the<\/span>
chest, on the front pasterns, on the feet, on the inside of the hind legs<\/span>
and around the anus. The forehead, the neck and the outer sides of<\/span>
the ears should be black like the top coat.<\/span>
SIZE AND WEIGHT<\/span><\/strong>
Height at withers Dogs and bitches between 30 and 35 cm.<\/span>
Weight Dogs and bitches approximately 4 to 8 kg.<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong> : Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
Particularly:<\/span>
\u2022 Heavy or round skull.<\/span>
\u2022 Wrinkles on forehead.<\/span>
\u2022 Short, pointed or narrow muzzle.<\/span>
\u2022 Pincer bite.<\/span>
\u2022 Strongly protruding cheeks or cheekbones.<\/span>
\u2022 Light, too large or round eyes.<\/span>
\u2022 Low set, too long or unevenly carried ears.<\/span>
\u2022 Throatiness.<\/span>
\u2022 Dewlap, narrow crest or neck.<\/span>
\u2022 Too long, tucked up or soft back.<\/span>
\u2022 Roach back.<\/span>
\u2022 Croup falling away.<\/span>
\u2022 Tail set inclined towards head.<\/span>
\u2022 Long feet.<\/span>
\u2022 Pacing movement.<\/span>
\u2022 Too short, too long, soft, wavy, shaggy, silky coat.<\/span>
\u2022 Brown undercoat.<\/span>
\u2022 A black trace on the back or a black saddle.<\/span>
\u2022 In Black\/Silver not clearly separated triangles on the chest. <\/span>
\u2022 Over- or undersize up to 1 cm.<\/span>
SERIOUS FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span>
\u2022 Clumsy or light build. Too low or too high on leg.<\/span>
\u2022 Inverse sexual type (e.g. doggy bitch).<\/span>
\u2022 Elbows turning out.<\/span>
\u2022 Straight or open hocked hindlegs.<\/span>
\u2022 Lower thigh too long.<\/span>
\u2022 Hocks turning inwards.<\/span>
\u2022 Rear pastern too short.<\/span>
\u2022 White or spotted coat in black or pepper and salt dogs.<\/span>
\u2022 Patchy coat in the colours black\/silver and white.<\/span>
\u2022 Over- or undersize by more than 1 cm but less than 2 cm.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span>
shall be disqualified.<\/span>
\u2022 Malformation of any kind.<\/span>
\u2022 Lack of breed type.<\/span>
\u2022 Faulty mouth, such as over- or undershot or wry mouth.<\/span>
\u2022 Severe faults in individual parts, such as faults in construction,<\/span>
coat and colour.<\/span>
\u2022 Over- or undersize by more than 2 cm.<\/span>
N.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed<\/span>
typical conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
