Due to the different shapes, sizes and types and the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">muddle of harsh, soft and silky coat textures, it was no easy task to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">evolve a small dog with the appearance and the characteristic<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">qualities of his bigger brother, the Schnauzer.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : Small, strong, stocky rather than<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slim, rough coated, elegant. A reduced image of the Schnauzer<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">without the drawback of a dwarfed appearance.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Square build in which the height at the withers is nearly equal to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the body length.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 The length of the head (measured from the tip of the nose to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">occiput) corresponds to half the length of the topline (measured<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from the withers to the set on of the tail). <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : His nature is similar to that of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the Schnauzer and is determined by the temperament and the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">behaviour of a small dog. Intelligence, fearlessness, endurance and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">alertness make the Miniature Schnauzer an agreeable house dog as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">well as a watch and companion dog which can be kept even in a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">small appartment without problems.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HEAD<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull : Strong, long without markedly protruding occiput. The head<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should be in keeping with the dog\u2019s force. The forehead is flat,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">without wrinkles and parallel to the bridge of nose.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Appears well defined due to the brows<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose : Well developed nose leather, always black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle : Ending in a blunt wedge. Bridge of nose straight.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips : Black, smoot and tight-fitting to the jaws. Corners of lips<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">closed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth : Strong upper and lower jaw. The complete scissor bite<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(42 pure white teeth according to the dentition formula), is strongly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">developed and firmly closing. The chewing muscles are strongly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">developed but the cheeks must not interfere with the reactangular<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shape of the head (with the beard).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes: Medium sized, oval, facing foreward, dark with lively<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">expression. Eyelids close fitting.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears : Drop ears, set high, V-shaped with inner edges lying close to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the cheeks, evenly carried , turned forward towards temples. Folds<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">parallel, should not be above the top of the skull..<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong> : The strong, muscular neck is nobly arched, blending<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">smoothly into the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Strongly set on, slim, nobly curved, corresponding to the dog\u2019s force.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Throat skin tight-fitting without folds.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">BODY<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Topline : Slightly sloping from withers towards rear. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers: Forming the highest point in topline.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back: Strong, short and taut.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loins : Short, strong and deep. The distance from the last rib to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hip is short to make the dog appear compact.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup : Slightly rounded and imperceptibly blending into tail set on.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest : Moderately broad, oval in diameter, reaching to the elbows.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The forechest is distinctly marked by the point of the sternum.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline and belly : Flanks not too tucked up, forming a well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">curved line with the underside of the ribcage.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong> : Natural; a sabre or sickle carriage is sought after.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: Seen from the front, the front legs are strong,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">straight and not close together. Seen from the side, the forearms are<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">straight.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulders: The shoulder blade lies close against the rib cage and is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">well muscled on both sides of the shoulder bone, protruding over the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">points of the thoracic vertebrae. Toes well-knit and arched (cat foot) with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">short dark nails and resistant pads.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: Standing obliquely when seen from the side,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">standing parallel but not close together when seen from the rear. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper thigh : Moderately long, broad and strongly muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle :Turning neither in nor out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh : Long, strong and sinewy, running into a strong hock.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock : Very well angulated, strong, firm, turning neither in nor out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus : Short, vertical to the ground.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet : Toes short, arched and well-knit. Nails short and black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Flexible, elegant, agile, free and ground<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">covering. The forelegs swinging as far forward as possible, the hind<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">legs, ground covering and springy, provide the necessary drive. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">front leg of one side and the hind leg of the other side move forward<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">at the same time. The back, the ligaments and the joints are firm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong> : Tight fitting over the whole body.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HAIR : The coat should be wiry, harsh and dense. It consists of a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dense undercoat and a not too short top coat, lying close to the body.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The top coat is rough and sufficiently long to allow the checking of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">its texture; it is neither bristly nor wavy. The hair on the limbs tends<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to be less harsh. Coat short on forehead and ears. Typical<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">characteristics are the not too soft beard on the muzzle and the bushy<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">eyebrows which slightly shade the eyes.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COLOUR<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Pure black with black undercoat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Pepper and Salt.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Black\/Silver.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Pure white with white undercoat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When breeding Pepper and Salt, the aim is a medium shading with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">evenly distributed, well pigmented, pepper colouring and grey<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">undercoat. The shades from dark iron grey to silver grey are all<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">permitted. In all colour variations there must be a dark mask, which<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should adapt harmoniously to the respective colour. Distinct light<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">markings on head, chest and limbs are undesirable. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the Black\/Silver colour, the aim in breeding is a black top coat<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with black undercoat, white markings over the eyes, on the cheeks, at<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the beard, at the throat, in two divided triangles at the front of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">chest, on the front pasterns, on the feet, on the inside of the hind legs<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and around the anus.
