From the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bracken, dogs especially suitable for hunting below ground were<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">consistently bred. From these short-legged dogs, the Dachshund<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">evolved and is recognised as one of the most versatile hunting breeds.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He also shows excellent performance above ground, hunting while<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">giving tongue, flushing and tracking wounded game. The oldest Club<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">devoted to the breeding of Dachshunds is the \u201cDeutsche Teckelklub\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">e.V., founded in 1888.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For decades the Dachshund has been bred in three different sizes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(Teckel, Miniature Teckel and Rabbit Teckel) and in three different<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">coat varieties (Smooth-haired, Wire-haired and Long-haired),<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">resulting in nine varieties.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: Low, short legged, elongated but<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">compact build, very muscular with cheeky, challenging head carriage<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and alert facial expression. His build allows agile, quick work above<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and below ground. Sexual dimorphism is noticeable.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: With a ground clearance of about<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">one third of the height at withers, the body length (from the point of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">manubrium of sternum to the point of the buttock) should be in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">harmonious relation to height at withers, about 1.7 \u2013 1.8 : 1.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Friendly by nature, neither<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fearful nor aggressive, with even temperament. Passionate, persistent<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and fast hunting dog with an excellent nose.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong>: Elongated as seen from above. As seen in profile, tapering<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">uniformly towards the nose leather, yet not pointed. Superciliary<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ridges clearly defined. Nasal cartilage and bridge of nose long and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">narrow.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: Rather flat, not too broad, gradually merging with the slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">arched nasal bridge. Occipital peak not pronounced much.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Slightly marked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: Nostrils well opened. Colour: see under respective colour<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">definition.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: Long, sufficiently broad and strong. Mouth can be opened<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">wide, at the level of the vertical of the eye.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: Taut fitting, covering the lower jaw well.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws \/ Teeth: Well-developed jaws. Scissor bite, even and closing<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tightly. Ideally, complete set of 42 teeth according to requirements of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the dentition formula with strong canines exactly fitting into each<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">other.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>EYES<\/strong>: Medium size, almond shape, set well apart, with clear<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">energetic and yet friendly expression. Not piercing. Colour bright dark<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">reddish-brown to blackish brown in all coat colours of the dogs. Wall-<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, fish- or pearl eyes in dapple dogs are not desired but shall be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tolerated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eye lids well pigmented.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>EARS<\/strong>: Set on high, not too forward. Sufficiently long, reaching the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">edge of the lips, but not much longer. Rounded. Mobile with front edge<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lying close to cheek.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: Sufficiently long, muscular. Tight fitting skin on throat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lightly arched nape of neck carried freely and high.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Topline: Blending harmoniously from neck to slightly sloping croup.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers: Pronounced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back: Behind the high withers, topline running from the thoracic<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">vertebrae straight or slightly inclined to the rear. Firm and wellmuscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loins: Strong, broad and well-muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: Broad and sufficiently long, not horizontal or sloping too<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">much.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest: Sternum well developed and so prominent that slight<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">depressions appear on either side. The ribcage, seen from the front, is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">oval. Seen from above and the side, it is spacious, giving plenty of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">space for heart and lung development. Ribs carried well back. With<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">correct length and angulation of shoulder blade and upper arm, the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">front leg covers the lowest point of the sternal line in profile. Dewlap<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">not pronounced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline and Belly: Slight tuck up. Chest smoothly transitioning to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the belly in a continuous line.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong>: The tail is carried in a harmonious continuation of the topline,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly falling off, not carried above topline. A slight curve in the last<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">third of the tail is permitted.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>LIMBS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General: Strongly muscled, well angulated. Seen from the front, clean<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">front legs (tight fitting skin), standing straight with good strength of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bone; feet pointing straight forward, positioned at the lowest point of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the chest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulders: Well defined muscles. Long sloping shoulder blade (ca. 90<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">degrees to upper arm), fitting close to chest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm: Equal in length to shoulder blade, set almost at right angle<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to it. Strong boned and well-muscled, close fitting to ribs but free in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">movement.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbows: Turning neither in nor out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm: Short, yetso long that the dog\u2019s ground clearance is one third<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of its height at withers. As straight as possible.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carpus \/ Wrist: Slightly closer together than the shoulder joints.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pastern: Seen from the side, should be neither steep nor noticeably<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">inclined forward.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Front feet: Toes close together, well arched with strong, resistant, well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">cushioned pads and short strong nails. The fifth toe has no function.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General: Strongly muscled, in good proportion to forequarters. Hindlegs parallel standing,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">neither close nor wide apart.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper thigh: Should be of good length and well-muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle (joint): Broad and strong with good angulation.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh: Short, almost at right angle to upper thigh. Wellmuscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock joint: Strong, with strong tendons, tight skin.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock: Relatively short, mobile towards lower thigh. Slightly curved<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">forward.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet: Four close knit toes, well arched. Standing firmly on strong<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pads.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Ground covering movement, flowing and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">energetic, with far reaching front strides without much lift, strong<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">drive and slightly springy transmission to backline. Tail is carried in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">harmonious continuation of backline, slightly sloping. Front and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hindlegs have parallel movement.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong>: Tight fitting, well pigmented. Colour: see under respective<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">colour definitions.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SMOOTH-HAIRED<\/span><\/strong><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: Short, dense, shiny, smooth fitting, tight and harsh. Not showing<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">any bald patches anywhere. Tail: fine, fully but not too profusely<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">coated. Somewhat longer guard hair on underside is not a fault.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour and Colour Patterns:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a) One-coloured: Red. Interspersed black hairs permissible. However,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a clean dark colour is preferable. A small white spot (up to 3 cm<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">diameter) is only permissible on the chest.
