BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong>: The breed comes from the<\/span>
Western Mediterranean region and has developed along the Spanish<\/span>
and Italian coastal region. It would seem that these dogs were<\/span>
imported early in Cuba by ocean navigating Italian captains.<\/span>
Erroneously, the most frequent brown colour of these dogs (tobacco)<\/span>
gave birth to the legend which would mean it to be a breed<\/span>
originating from Havana, capital of Cuba. The political events<\/span>
however have led to the total disappearance of the old blood lines of<\/span>
the Havanese in Cuba; apparently a few dogs could be successfully<\/span>
smuggled out from Cuba; their descendants have survived in the<\/span>
U.S.A.<\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: The Havanese is a sturdy little dog,<\/span>
low on his legs, with long abundant hair, soft and preferably wavy.<\/span>
His movement is lively and elastic. <\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: The length of the muzzle (tip of<\/span>
nose to stop) is equal to the distance between the stop and the<\/span>
occipital protuberance. The relation between the length of the body<\/span>
(measured from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock)<\/span>
and the height at the withers is of 4\/3.<\/span>
BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Exceptionally bright he is easy<\/span>
to train as alarm dog. Affectionate, of a happy nature, he is amiable,<\/span>
a charmer, playful and even a bit of a clown. He loves children and<\/span>
plays endlessly with them.<\/span>
HEAD<\/strong>: Of medium length, the relation between the length of the<\/span>
head and that of the trunk (measured from the withers to the base of<\/span>
the tail) is of 3\/7.<\/span>
CRANIAL REGION:<\/span>
Skull: Flat to very slightly rounded, broad; forehead hardly rising;<\/span>
seen from above it is rounded at the back and almost straight and<\/span>
square on the other three sides.<\/span>
Stop: Moderately marked.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION:<\/span>
Nose: Black or brown.<\/span>
Muzzle: Narrowing progressively and slightly towards the nose but<\/span>
neither snipey nor truncated.<\/span>
Lips: Fine, lean, tight.<\/span>
Jaws\/Teeth: Scissor bite. A complete dentition is desirable. The<\/span>
absence of premolars 1 (PM1) and molars 3 (M3) is tolerated.<\/span>
Cheeks: Very flat, not prominent.<\/span>
Eyes: Quite big, almond shape, of brown colour as dark as possible.<\/span>
Kind expression. The eyes rims must be dark brown to black.<\/span>
Ears: Set relatively high; they fall along the cheeks forming a<\/span>
discreet fold which raises them slightly. Their extremity is in a<\/span>
lightly rounded point. They are covered with hair in long fringes.<\/span>
Neither propeller ears (sticking sideways), nor stuck to the cheeks.<\/span>
NECK<\/strong>: Of medium length. <\/span>
BODY<\/strong>: The length of the body is slightly superior to that of the<\/span>
height at the withers.<\/span>
Back: Topline straight, slightly arched over the loin.<\/span>
Croup: Noticeably inclined.<\/span>
Ribs: Well sprung.<\/span>
Belly (abdomen): Well tucked up.<\/span>
TAIL<\/strong>: Carried high, either in shape of a crozier or preferably rolled<\/span>
over the back; it is furnished with feathering of long silky hair.<\/span>
LIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
FOREQUARTERS: Forelegs straight and parallel, lean; good bone<\/span>
structure. The distance from the ground to the elbow must not be<\/span>
greater than that between the elbow and the withers.<\/span>
Forefeet: Of slightly elongated shape; small; tight toes<\/span>
HINDQUARTERS: Good bone structure; moderate angulations.<\/span>
Hind feet: Of slightly elongated shape; small; tight toes.<\/span>
GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: According to his happy nature, the<\/span>
Havanese has a strikingly light-footed and elastic gait; forelegs with<\/span>
free stride and pointing straight forward, the hindlegs giving them<\/span>
the impulsion and moving in a straight line.<\/span>
COAT<\/span><\/strong>
Hair: Undercoat woolly and not very developed; it is often totally<\/span>
absent. The topcoat is very long (12-18 cm in an adult dog), soft, flat<\/span>
or wavy and may form curly strands. All grooming, the usage of<\/span>
scissors to even out the length of the coat and all trimming is<\/span>
forbidden.<\/span>
Exception: tidying up the hair on the feet is permitted, the hair on the<\/span>
forehead may be slightly shortened so that it does not cover the eyes<\/span>
and the hair on the muzzle may be slightly tidied up, but it is<\/span>
preferable to leave it in natural length. <\/span>
Colour:<\/span>
Rarely completely pure white, fawn in its different shades (slight<\/span>
blackened overlay admitted), black, havana-brown, tobacco colour,<\/span>
reddish-brown. Patches in mentioned colours allowed.<\/span>
Tan markings in all nuances permitted.<\/span>
SIZE<\/strong>:<\/span>
Height at the withers: From 23 to 27 cm.<\/span>
Tolerance : from 21 to 29 cm.<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
IMPORTANT FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 General appearance lacking in type.<\/span>
\u2022 Truncated or snipey muzzle, length not identical to that of the<\/span>
skull.<\/span>
\u2022 Bird of prey eyes; eyes too deep set or prominent; rims of eyelids<\/span>
partially depigmented.<\/span>
\u2022 Body too long or too short.<\/span>
\u2022 Straight tail, not carried high.<\/span>
\u2022 \u00ab French \u00bb front (pasterns too close, feet turned outwards).<\/span>
\u2022 Deformed hind feet.<\/span>
\u2022 Coat harsh, not abundant; hair short except on puppies; groomed<\/span>
coat.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span>
shall be disqualified.<\/span>
\u2022 Depigmented nose.<\/span>
\u2022 Upper or lower prognathism.<\/span>
\u2022 Ectropion, entropion; rim of eyelids of one or both eyes<\/span>
depigmented. <\/span>
\u2022 Size over or under the indicated norms of the standard.<\/span>
N.B.<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span>
conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
