It would seem that these dogs were<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">imported early in Cuba by ocean navigating Italian captains.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Erroneously, the most frequent brown colour of these dogs (tobacco)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">gave birth to the legend which would mean it to be a breed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">originating from Havana, capital of Cuba. The political events<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">however have led to the total disappearance of the old blood lines of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the Havanese in Cuba; apparently a few dogs could be successfully<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">smuggled out from Cuba; their descendants have survived in the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">U.S.A.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: The Havanese is a sturdy little dog,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">low on his legs, with long abundant hair, soft and preferably wavy.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His movement is lively and elastic. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: The length of the muzzle (tip of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nose to stop) is equal to the distance between the stop and the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">occipital protuberance. The relation between the length of the body<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(measured from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the height at the withers is of 4\/3.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Exceptionally bright he is easy<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to train as alarm dog. Affectionate, of a happy nature, he is amiable,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a charmer, playful and even a bit of a clown. He loves children and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">plays endlessly with them.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong>: Of medium length, the relation between the length of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">head and that of the trunk (measured from the withers to the base of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the tail) is of 3\/7.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: Flat to very slightly rounded, broad; forehead hardly rising;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">seen from above it is rounded at the back and almost straight and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">square on the other three sides.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Moderately marked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: Black or brown.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: Narrowing progressively and slightly towards the nose but<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">neither snipey nor truncated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: Fine, lean, tight.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth: Scissor bite. A complete dentition is desirable. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">absence of premolars 1 (PM1) and molars 3 (M3) is tolerated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheeks: Very flat, not prominent.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes: Quite big, almond shape, of brown colour as dark as possible.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kind expression. The eyes rims must be dark brown to black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears: Set relatively high; they fall along the cheeks forming a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">discreet fold which raises them slightly. Their extremity is in a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lightly rounded point. They are covered with hair in long fringes.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Neither propeller ears (sticking sideways), nor stuck to the cheeks.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: Of medium length. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>: The length of the body is slightly superior to that of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">height at the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back: Topline straight, slightly arched over the loin.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: Noticeably inclined.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ribs: Well sprung.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Belly (abdomen): Well tucked up.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong>: Carried high, either in shape of a crozier or preferably rolled<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">over the back; it is furnished with feathering of long silky hair.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS: Forelegs straight and parallel, lean; good bone<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">structure. The distance from the ground to the elbow must not be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">greater than that between the elbow and the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet: Of slightly elongated shape; small; tight toes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS: Good bone structure; moderate angulations.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet: Of slightly elongated shape; small; tight toes.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: According to his happy nature, the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Havanese has a strikingly light-footed and elastic gait; forelegs with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">free stride and pointing straight forward, the hindlegs giving them<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the impulsion and moving in a straight line.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: Undercoat woolly and not very developed; it is often totally<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">absent. The topcoat is very long (12-18 cm in an adult dog), soft, flat<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">or wavy and may form curly strands. All grooming, the usage of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">scissors to even out the length of the coat and all trimming is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">forbidden.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Exception: tidying up the hair on the feet is permitted, the hair on the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">forehead may be slightly shortened so that it does not cover the eyes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the hair on the muzzle may be slightly tidied up, but it is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">preferable to leave it in natural length. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rarely completely pure white, fawn in its different shades (slight<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">blackened overlay admitted), black, havana-brown, tobacco colour,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">reddish-brown. Patches in mentioned colours allowed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tan markings in all nuances permitted.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SIZE<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers: From 23 to 27 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tolerance : from 21 to 29 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 General appearance lacking in type.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Truncated or snipey muzzle, length not identical to that of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">skull.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Bird of prey eyes; eyes too deep set or prominent; rims of eyelids<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">partially depigmented.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Body too long or too short.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Straight tail, not carried high.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 \u00ab French \u00bb front (pasterns too close, feet turned outwards).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Deformed hind feet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Coat harsh, not abundant; hair short except on puppies; groomed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">coat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shall be disqualified.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Depigmented nose.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Upper or lower prognathism.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Ectropion, entropion; rim of eyelids of one or both eyes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">depigmented. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Size over or under the indicated norms of the standard.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>N.B.<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">descended into the scrotum.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color:
