At present, in first place<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">numerically among French sporting breeds. Probably one of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">oldest of the spaniel type dogs, improved at the beginning of the 20th<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">century by diverse outcrosses and selections. A draft of a breed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">standard drawn up in Nantes in 1907 was presented and adopted at<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the first General Assembly held in Loud\u00e9ac (in former C\u00f4tes du<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nord department, now C\u00f4tes d\u2019Armor), June 7, 1908. This was the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">first standard of the \u00ab Naturally Short-Tailed Brittany Spaniel<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Club \u00bb.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : Smallest of the pointing breeds. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Brittany spaniel is a dog with a Continental spaniel-type head<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(bracco\u00efde in French) and a short or inexistent tail. Built<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">harmoniously on a solid but not weighty frame. The whole is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">compact and well-knit, without undue heaviness, while staying<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sufficiently elegant. The dog is vigorous, the look is bright and the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">expression intelligent. The general aspect is \u00ab COBBY \u00bb<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(brachymorphic), full of energy, having conserved in the course of its<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">evolution the short-coupled model sought after and fixed by those<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">having recreated the breed. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 The skull is longer than the muzzle, with a ratio of 3 : 2.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Head is in proportion to the body.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 The depth of the chest, from withers to brisket, is slightly less<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">than half the height of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 The scapulo-ischial length (from the point of the shoulder to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">point of the buttocks) is equal to the height at the withers (the dog<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fits in a square).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : Dog adapting itself to any<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">environment, sociable, with an intelligent and attentive expression,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">mentally balanced. Versatile pointing dog, for any game on any<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">terrain, precocious in revealing its hunting passion. Remarkable in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">its searching for game, its gaits, its scenting ability, its ranging in the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">field, its spontaneity and duration of pointing, its retrieving and its<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">aptitude for training.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong> : The features are fnely chiselled. The skin fits tightly.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION : Slightly rounded as seen from the front or the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">side. Seen from above, the lateral surfaces are slightly convex. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">top lines of the head and the muzzle are parallel. The width of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">skull measured between the zygomatic arches is less than its length.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The supercilliary arches are not prominent but form a slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rounded curve. The frontal furrow as well as the sagittal crest are<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly defined. The stop is moderate. The occipital crest as well as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the zygomatic arches are moderately defined.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose : Large, with very wide, humid and well-open nostrils, of a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">colour in harmony with that of the coat, as is the case of the edges of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the eyelids and natural orifices.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle : Straight, with lateral surfaces practically parallel. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips : Not loose, not very large, relatively thin and fitting tightly.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The lower is discreetly masked by the upper whose contour bends<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">progressively until reaching the commisure, which is not too<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">apparent and tightly closed. The whole is free of depigmentation.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth : The teeth are set square to the jaws and form a complete<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and healthy set. Scissors bite.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheeks : Not heavy, the skin fitting tightly.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes : Slightly oblique. With an intelligent, soft and frank<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">expression. Somewhat oval, not protruding, with fine, well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pigmented, tightly fitting eyelids. The colour of the iris is in keeping<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with the colour of the coat, preferably dark. Eye expression coupled<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with upward movement of the base of the ears gives rise to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">true \u00ab Brittany expression \u00bb.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears : Set high, triangular in shape, relatively large and rather short,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(drawn forward, the tip of the ear reaches the stop). Partially covered<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with wavy hair, especially in the upper part, the extremity being<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">covered by short hair. Always quite mobile when the dog is attentive<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">or in action.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong> : Of medium length and well muscled, in the form of a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly curved, never arched, truncated cone. Set smoothly to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shoulders and without dewlap.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Topline : Level to the loins and the beginning of the croup.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers : Sufficiently mobile and hardly protruding, without being<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">loaded.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back : Straight, short and rigid, well coupled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loin : Short, broad and muscular.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hip : Very slightly slanting, broad and muscular.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest : Let down to elbow level, broad with ribs well sprung but not<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">barrel chested. Sternum wide and scarcely rising towards the rear.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The rearmost ribs long and supple.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Abdomen : Slightly tucked-up.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Flank : Slightly rising and short. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong> : Set high, carried horizontally (or slightly lowered), often<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lively when the dog is attentive or in action. The Brittany Spaniel<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">can be born tailless or with a very short tail. When the tail is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">docked the ideal length is from 3 to 6 cm, the docked tail should<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">not exceed 10 cm.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance : Limbs well poised. Joints flexible and sturdy.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulder : Mobile, long (30% of the height at the withers), close to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the body with thick muscle. Its slope is that of a galloper, between<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">55 and 60 degrees from the horizontal. The tips of the shoulder<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">blades are separated by 5 cm (2 \u2019\u2019).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Arm : Heavy, thick and very muscular. It is slightly longer than the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shoulder blade. The scapulo-humeral angle (between the shoulder<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">blade and the arm) is between 115 and 120 degrees .<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm : Muscular and clean. Slightly longer than the arm. It<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should be practically perpendicular to the ground.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbow : Close to body &#8211; neither in nor out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metacarpus (Pastern) : Solid while maintaining a certain flexibility,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly oblique (between 15 and 20 degrees from the vertical).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Feet : Rather round, toes tight, pads firm, toenails short.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance : Limbs well poised and parallel when seen from<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">behind.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh : Important with thick and bulging muscles. It should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slanted between 70 and 75 degrees from the horizontal.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh : Very slightly longer than the thigh with clean, bulging<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">muscles. Broad in the upper part, diminishing gradually in size<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">towards its junction with the hock. The angle between the upper<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">thigh and lower thigh is close to 130 degrees.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock : Clean, with visible tendons.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus (Rear pastern) : Solid, nearly vertical when seen from the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">side. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Feet : Longer than the forefeet, while maintaining the same<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">characteristics.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong> : The different gaits are easy but powerful,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">even and lively. The legs move straight without exaggerated<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bouncing of the body and without rolling, the top line staying level.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The canter is the most common gait in the field, the strides are rapid<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and of medium length, the hind legs having little extension to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rear (collected canter).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong> : Fine, tight fitting and well pigmented.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HAIR : The coat is fine but not silky, lying flat on the body or with a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hint of a wave. Never curly. Short on the head and the front of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">limbs. The hind part of the latter has a heavier coat, furnished with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">abundant feathering, diminishing along their length down to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">carpus (wrist) or the tarsus (hock), or even lower.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COLOUR : White and orange, white and black, white and liver, with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">more or less extensive irregular white patches. Piobald or roan,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sometimes with ticking on the top and sides of the muzzle or the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">limbs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Equally, in the case of tricolour coats, with tan spotting (orange to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dark tan) on the top and sides of the muzzle, over the eyes, on the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">limbs, on the chest and over the base of the tail.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A narrow blaze is desirable with any colour of coat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A self coloured coat is not allowed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SIZE<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Heitght at the wither :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Males : 48 cm minimum (18,9 \u2019\u2019) with a tolerance of 1 cm<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(0,4 \u2019\u2019).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">51 cm maximum (20,1 \u2019\u2019) with a tolerance of 1 cm<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(0,4 \u2019\u2019).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ideal height : 49 to 50 cm (19,3 \u2019\u2019 to 19,7 \u2019\u2019). <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females : 47 cm minimum (18,5 \u2019\u2019) with a tolerance of 1 cm<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(0,4 \u2019\u2019).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">50 cm maximum (20,1 \u2019\u2019) with a tolerance of 1 cm<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(0,4 \u2019\u2019).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ideal height : 48 to 49 cm (18,9 \u2019\u2019 to 19,3 \u2019\u2019).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong> : Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Character : Timidity, shifty-eyed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Head planes : Somewhat divergent.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Nose : Very slightly depigmented, interior of the nostrils<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">depigmented.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Teeth : Pincer bite, teeth out of line.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Muzzle : Pinched or snipy.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Lips : Heavy, pendulous, upper lip covering the lower either<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">insufficiently or excessively.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Eyes : Prominent, round or almond shaped.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Ears : Hung too low or falling away too shaprly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Back : Arched or saddle back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Croup : Too narrow or falling away too sharply.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Abdomen : Bulky or too tucked up (whippety).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Feet : Splayed, too round or too long.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Neck : Heavy and lacking reach. Throatiness.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Loin : Long, narrow, weak.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Flank : Too hollow, often accompanied by a weak loin lacking<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">breadth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Limbs : Insufficient bone. Out at the elbows, pigeon toed, slew<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">feet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Coat : Not heavy enough on the body.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SERIOUS FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Behaviour : Sluggish .<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Skull : Zygomatic arches too prominent, stop very pronounced,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">superciliary arches too prominent. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Eyes : Light, mean look, haw-like expression.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Neck : Excessively long, distinct dewlap.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Gait : Poor mover.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical of behavioural abnormalities<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shall be disqualified.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Lack of type : Insufficient breed characteristics, which means the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">animal on the whole doesn\u2019t resemble other samples of the breed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Height : Outside the limits defined by the standard.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Head planes : Marked convergence.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Abnormal markings : White spot on the ear or eye in a white<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">patch.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Eyes : Very light in colour, heterochromia (eyes of different<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">colours), squinting entropion, ectropion.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Jaws : Overshot or undershot mouth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Teeth : The first premolars of both jaws and the last molars of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lower jaw are considered without importance. Can only be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">admitted the absence of 2 PM2 or 1 PM2 and 1 PM3. Contiguous<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">absence of these two teeth (PM2 and PM3) is eliminating.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Absence of any other tooth is eliminating.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Pigmentation : Distinct unpigmented areas on the nose or eyelids.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Presence of dewclaws, even if rudimentary.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Serious morphological anomaly.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">N.B.:<\/span><\/strong><br
