UTILISATION<\/strong> : The Irish Water Spaniel can be easily adapted to<\/span>
suit most forms of shooting he will hunt, often point and retrieve<\/span>
readily from heavy cover. The construction and nature of the breed<\/span>
has traditionally made it the choice of the wildfowler.<\/span>

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong>: The exact origins of the<\/span>
breed remain obscure. Generally it is thought that Water Spaniels<\/span>
evolved from dogs that originated in Persia and came to Ireland via<\/span>
Spain. The first Irish reference to \u201c water dogs that pursue water<\/span>
fowl\u201d dates from 1600, so we know that dogs with waterproof coats<\/span>
were used in Ireland even before the advent of the fowling piece.<\/span>
There is no real evidence of the ancestry of the Irish Water Spaniel<\/span>
except in its most peculiar feature-the rat tail. This feature appears<\/span>
in no similar dog and makes it very likely that the modern breed had<\/span>
an indigenous Irish ancestor. The tail has given rise to the names \u201c<\/span>
Whip Tail\u201d and \u201c Rat Tail\u201d. In any event the descendants of these<\/span>
dogs were accepted and achieved great success on show benches in<\/span>
the second half of the 19th century. In 1890 the Irish Water Spaniel<\/span>
Club was formed to promote the interests of the breed.<\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : Smart, upstanding, strongly built,<\/span>
compact or cobby. <\/span>
BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : Proud, combining great<\/span>
intelligence and endurance with a bold and dashing eagerness of<\/span>
temperament, immense stamina and loyalty.<\/span>
A good family dog with a sense of humour but discerning with<\/span>
strangers.<\/span>
HEAD<\/strong> : Skull and head should be of good size.<\/span>
CRANIAL REGION :<\/span>
Skull: Skull high in dome, good length and width allowing for large<\/span>
brain capacity. Top-knot should consist of long loose curls growing<\/span>
down into a well defined peak between the eyes and should not be in<\/span>
the form of a wig, i.e. growing straight across.<\/span>
Stop : Gradual.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION :<\/span>
Face: perfectly smooth. Hair grows in a narrow line forming a beard<\/span>
at the back of the lower jaw.<\/span>
Nose : Large and well developed and of dark liver colour<\/span>
Muzzle : Long, strong and somewhat square in appearance<\/span>
Teeth: Strong and regular with scissors bite.<\/span>
Eyes : Comparatively small almond-shaped, dark amber or dark<\/span>
hazel and very intelligent looking.<\/span>
Ears: Very long and lobe-shaped in the leather, set low, hanging<\/span>
quite close to the cheeks and covered with long, twisted curls of hair.<\/span>
NECK<\/strong> : Fairly long, strong and arching, (enabling the head to be<\/span>
carried well above the level of the back) and strongly set into the<\/span>
shoulders.<\/span>
BODY<\/strong>: Should be of good size, being as a whole so proportionate as<\/span>
to give a barrel-shaped appearance accentuated by the springing of<\/span>
the ribs, overall strong and well- muscled.<\/span>
Back : Short, broad and level, strongly coupled to the hindquarters.<\/span>
Loins : Deep and wide.<\/span>
Chest : Deep, but not too wide or round between the forelegs, though<\/span>
large girth with ribs well sprung behind the shoulders. Ribs carried<\/span>
well back. <\/span>
TAIL<\/strong> : Smooth, strong and thick at root (where it is covered for 3 to<\/span>
4 inches – 7.5cm to 10cm with short curls), and gradually tapering,<\/span>
ending in a fine point. It should not be long enough to reach the<\/span>
hock joint, and should be carried nearly level with the back in a<\/span>
straight line.<\/span>
LIMBS<\/strong><\/span>
FOREQUARTERS :<\/span>
Shoulders : Very powerful and sloping.<\/span>
Forelegs :Well boned and straight, the forearm at point of elbow in a<\/span>
straight line with the highest point of the shoulder blade.<\/span>
HINDQUARTERS : Very powerful.<\/span>
Stifles : Well bent stifles.<\/span>
Hocks : Hocks set low.<\/span>
FEET: Large, somewhat round and spreading, well covered with<\/span>
hair, both over and between the toes, but free from any superfluous<\/span>
feather.<\/span>
GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: The gait has a characteristic peculiar to the<\/span>
breed, that of a rolling motion produced by the barrel-shaped ribcage.<\/span><\/p>\n

COAT<\/strong><\/span>
HAIR : Dense, tight, crisp ringlets, entirely free from woolliness but<\/span>
with a natural oiliness. The back and sides of the neck should be<\/span>
covered with curls similar to those on the body, the throat should be<\/span>
smooth, the smooth hair forming a V-shaped patch from the back of<\/span>
the lower jaw to the breastbone. The forelegs covered with feather,<\/span>
which should be abundant all round though shorter in front. Below<\/span>
the hocks, the hindlegs must be smooth in front, but feathered behind<\/span>
down to the feet.<\/span>
COLOUR : A very rich puce liver, white on chest objectionable. <\/span>
SIZE<\/strong> :<\/span>
Dogs 21\/23 inches (53\/59cm)<\/span>
Bitches 20\/22 inches (51\/56cm)<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span>
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault<\/span>
and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should<\/span>
be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and<\/span>
welfare of the dog.<\/span>
\u2022 White on Chest.<\/span>
\u2022 Paleness of coat.<\/span>
\u2022 Light eye.<\/span>
\u2022 Woolliness of coat.<\/span>
\u2022 Feather on front of Hocks.<\/span>
\u2022 Want of feather on front of forelegs.<\/span>
\u2022 Splay feet.<\/span>
\u2022 Feather on stern.<\/span>
\u2022 Feather on face.<\/span>
\u2022 White on feet.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/strong><\/span>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical of behavioural abnormalities<\/span>
shall be disqualified.<\/span>
N.B.:<\/strong><\/span>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed<\/span>
typical conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
