The construction and nature of the breed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">has traditionally made it the choice of the wildfowler.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FCI-CLASSIFICATION<\/strong> : Group 8 Retrievers, Flushing Dogs,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Water Dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Section 3 Water Dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With working trial.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong>: The exact origins of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">breed remain obscure. Generally it is thought that Water Spaniels<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">evolved from dogs that originated in Persia and came to Ireland via<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spain. The first Irish reference to \u201c water dogs that pursue water<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fowl\u201d dates from 1600, so we know that dogs with waterproof coats<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">were used in Ireland even before the advent of the fowling piece.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is no real evidence of the ancestry of the Irish Water Spaniel<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">except in its most peculiar feature-the rat tail. This feature appears<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in no similar dog and makes it very likely that the modern breed had<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">an indigenous Irish ancestor. The tail has given rise to the names \u201c<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Whip Tail\u201d and \u201c Rat Tail\u201d. In any event the descendants of these<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dogs were accepted and achieved great success on show benches in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the second half of the 19th century. In 1890 the Irish Water Spaniel<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Club was formed to promote the interests of the breed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : Smart, upstanding, strongly built,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">compact or cobby. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : Proud, combining great<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">intelligence and endurance with a bold and dashing eagerness of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">temperament, immense stamina and loyalty.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A good family dog with a sense of humour but discerning with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strangers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong> : Skull and head should be of good size.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: Skull high in dome, good length and width allowing for large<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brain capacity. Top-knot should consist of long loose curls growing<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">down into a well defined peak between the eyes and should not be in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the form of a wig, i.e. growing straight across.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop : Gradual.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Face: perfectly smooth. Hair grows in a narrow line forming a beard<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">at the back of the lower jaw.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose : Large and well developed and of dark liver colour<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle : Long, strong and somewhat square in appearance<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Teeth: Strong and regular with scissors bite.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes : Comparatively small almond-shaped, dark amber or dark<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hazel and very intelligent looking.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears: Very long and lobe-shaped in the leather, set low, hanging<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">quite close to the cheeks and covered with long, twisted curls of hair.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong> : Fairly long, strong and arching, (enabling the head to be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">carried well above the level of the back) and strongly set into the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shoulders.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>: Should be of good size, being as a whole so proportionate as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to give a barrel-shaped appearance accentuated by the springing of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the ribs, overall strong and well- muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back : Short, broad and level, strongly coupled to the hindquarters.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loins : Deep and wide.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest : Deep, but not too wide or round between the forelegs, though<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">large girth with ribs well sprung behind the shoulders. Ribs carried<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">well back. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong> : Smooth, strong and thick at root (where it is covered for 3 to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4 inches &#8211; 7.5cm to 10cm with short curls), and gradually tapering,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ending in a fine point. It should not be long enough to reach the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hock joint, and should be carried nearly level with the back in a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">straight line.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>LIMBS<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulders : Very powerful and sloping.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forelegs :Well boned and straight, the forearm at point of elbow in a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">straight line with the highest point of the shoulder blade.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS : Very powerful.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifles : Well bent stifles.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hocks : Hocks set low.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FEET: Large, somewhat round and spreading, well covered with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hair, both over and between the toes, but free from any superfluous<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">feather.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: The gait has a characteristic peculiar to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">breed, that of a rolling motion produced by the barrel-shaped ribcage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>COAT<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HAIR : Dense, tight, crisp ringlets, entirely free from woolliness but<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with a natural oiliness. The back and sides of the neck should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">covered with curls similar to those on the body, the throat should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">smooth, the smooth hair forming a V-shaped patch from the back of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the lower jaw to the breastbone. The forelegs covered with feather,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">which should be abundant all round though shorter in front. Below<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the hocks, the hindlegs must be smooth in front, but feathered behind<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">down to the feet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COLOUR : A very rich puce liver, white on chest objectionable. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SIZE<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dogs 21\/23 inches (53\/59cm)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bitches 20\/22 inches (51\/56cm)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">welfare of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 White on Chest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Paleness of coat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Light eye.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Woolliness of coat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Feather on front of Hocks.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Want of feather on front of forelegs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Splay feet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Feather on stern.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Feather on face.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 White on feet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>DISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical of behavioural abnormalities<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shall be disqualified.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>N.B.:<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">descended into the scrotum.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color:
