It is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">believed to be the result of matings between the \u201cmajorero\u201d, a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">prehispanic dog indigenous to these islands, and other molossoids<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">introduced to the Canary Islands.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These matings produced an ethnical group of mastiff-type dogs, of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">moderately large size, brindle or fawn with white marking, with a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">specific molossoid morphology but yet agile and powerful, having a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strong temperament, robust and lively, loyal character.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During the XVI and XVII centuries, the number of these dogs<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">increased considerably and numerous references to them in preConquest historical texts, especially in the \u201cCedularios del Cabildo\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(municipal registers), which explain their duties essentially as guard<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dogs and protectors of cattle.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: A moderately large sized molossoid,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with a rectilinear profile and black mask. Robust and wellproportioned. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: The body is longer than the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">height at the withers; this characteristic is more noticeable in the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">female.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull-foreface proportion is 60-40%. The width of the skull is 3\/5 of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the total length of the head. The distance from elbow to ground<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should be 50% of the height at the withers for males and a little less<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">for females.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Calm appearance; attentive<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">expression. Especially suited to guarding and traditionally used for<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">herding cattle. Balanced temperament and very self-confident. Low<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and deep bark. Obedient and docile with family members, very<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">devoted to its master, but can be suspicious of strangers. Confident<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">attitude, noble and a little distant. When alert, the stance is firm with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a vigilant attitude.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong>: Massive, brachycephalic and compact in appearance,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">covered with thick skin. The shape tends towards a slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">elongated cube. The cranial-facial lines are parallel or slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">converging.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: Slightly convex in anteposterior and transversal direction.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Frontal bone tends to be flat. The width is almost identical to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">length. Pronounced zygomatic arch, with well developed cheek and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">jaw muscles, but not prominent, covered with loose skin. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">occipital protuberance is only slightly marked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: The stop is pronounced, but not abrupt. The furrow between<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the frontal lobes is well defined and is about two thirds the size of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the skull.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: Wide, strong black pigmentation. In line with the muzzle. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nostrils are large to facilitate breathing.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: Shorter than the skull, normally about 40% of the total<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">length of the head. The width is 2\/3 of that of the skull. Very wide<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">base, narrowing slightly towards the nose. Bridge of the nose is flat<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and straight, without ridges. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: The upper lip is pendulous, although not excessively. Seen<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from the front, the upper and lower lips come together to form an<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">inverted V. The flews are slightly divergent. The inside of the lips is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a dark colour.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth: Scissor bite or slightly undershot bite, max 2 mms.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pincer bite is admitted but not desirable due to the dental erosion<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">produced. The dental arch is wide at the canines. The teeth are wide<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and solidly set. Large molars, small incisors, well developed canines.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>EYES<\/strong>: Slightly oval in shape, from medium to large in size. Set well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">apart, but neither sunken nor protruding. Eyelids are black and tightfitting, never sagging. The colour varies from dark to medium<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brown, depending on the colour of the coat. They should never be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">light.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>EARS<\/strong>: Medium sized, set well apart, with short and fine hair. They<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fall naturally on each side of the head. If folded, they are in the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shape of a rose. They are set on slightly above eye level. Ears set too<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">high and very close on the head are considered unusual. In countries<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">were cropping is allowed, they must stand erect.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: Shorter than the length of the head. Skin on the underside is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">loose, forming a slight dewlap. Solid and straight, it tends to be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">cylindrical and muscular.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>: Long, broad and deep.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Top line: Straight, without deformations and sustained by well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">developed but barely visible muscles. Rising slightly from the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">withers to the croup. The height at the croup is 1 \u2013 2 cm more than<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the height at the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: Medium length, broad and rounded. Should not be long as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">this would limit movement. The female is usually broader.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest: With great capacity and well defined pectoral muscles. Seen<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from both the front and the side, it should be well let down to at least<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the elbow. Thoracic perimeter is usually equal to the height at the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">withers plus 45%. Well sprung ribcage. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline and belly: Slightly tucked up, never sagging. The flanks<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">are only slightly pronounced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong>: Thick base, tapering to the tip, down to the hock but no<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">longer. Medium set on. In action it rises like a sabre, but without<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">curling nor leaning towards the back. At rest it hangs straight with a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slight curve at the tip.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulder: Well laid back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm: Well angulated, oblique.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm: Well balanced, straight. Strong boned and well muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbow: Must be neither too close to the ribs nor sticking out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metacarpus (Pastern): Very solid and slightly sloping.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet: Cat feet with rounded toes, not too close together. Well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">developed and black pads. Nails are dark, white nails should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">avoided, although they can occur in function of coat colour.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: Seen from behind, strong and parallel, without<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">deviation.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh: Long and well muscled thighs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle (Knee): Angulation not very pronounced but should not be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">insufficient.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Always well let down.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet: Slightly longer than the front feet, otherwise identical.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: On the move, the Presa Canario is agile and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">supple and should cover a lot of ground. Long reach. The tail is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">carried low and the head is carried only a little above the level of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">back. When alert, the head and tail are carried high.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong>: Thick and elastic. More loose on and around the neck. When<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">alert, the skin on the head forms symmetrical wrinkles which fan out<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from the furrow between the front lobes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>COAT<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: Short, coarse, flat with no undercoat (it can appear on neck and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">on back of the thighs). Rather coarse to the touch. Very short and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fine on the ears; slightly longer on the withers and on the back of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">thighs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour: All shades of brindle, from warm dark brown to pale grey or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">blond. All shades of fawn to sandy. White marks are acceptable on<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the chest, at the base of the neck or throat, forefeet and toes of hind<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">feet, but these should be kept to a minimum. The mask is always<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">black, and should not spread above eye level.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SIZE AND WEIGHT:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers: Males: 60 &#8211; 66 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: 56 &#8211; 62 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For very typical specimens, a tolerance of 2 cm. over or under these<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">limits is accepted.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Minimum: Males: 50 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: 40 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maximum: Males: 65 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: 55 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">health and welfare of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Pincer bite.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SEVERE FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any fault is considered severe when affecting the expression<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and limiting the type of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Incorrect head proportions. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Extremely convergent facial-cranial lines (over pronounced<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">stop)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Loins and withers of the same height.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Incorrect position of limbs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Square profile.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Triangular head, narrow (not cube shape).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Thin, curled or deformed tail. Set on high.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Saddle or roach back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Light eyes (yellow), very close together or oblique, sunken or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">protruding.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Excessive undershot mouth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Insufficient mask.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Missing teeth (except P1).<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">abnormalities.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Total depigmented nose.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Unacceptable white marks.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Overshot mouth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Croup lower than withers. Sloping topline.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Blue eyes or unmatched in colour.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Cropped tail.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">N.B.:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color:
