BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY:<\/strong> A molossoid type dog,<\/span>
originating from Tenerife and Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). It is<\/span>
believed to be the result of matings between the \u201cmajorero\u201d, a<\/span>
prehispanic dog indigenous to these islands, and other molossoids<\/span>
introduced to the Canary Islands.<\/span>
These matings produced an ethnical group of mastiff-type dogs, of<\/span>
moderately large size, brindle or fawn with white marking, with a<\/span>
specific molossoid morphology but yet agile and powerful, having a<\/span>
strong temperament, robust and lively, loyal character.<\/span>
During the XVI and XVII centuries, the number of these dogs<\/span>
increased considerably and numerous references to them in preConquest historical texts, especially in the \u201cCedularios del Cabildo\u201d<\/span>
(municipal registers), which explain their duties essentially as guard<\/span>
dogs and protectors of cattle.<\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: A moderately large sized molossoid,<\/span>
with a rectilinear profile and black mask. Robust and wellproportioned. <\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: The body is longer than the<\/span>
height at the withers; this characteristic is more noticeable in the<\/span>
female.<\/span>
Skull-foreface proportion is 60-40%. The width of the skull is 3\/5 of<\/span>
the total length of the head. The distance from elbow to ground<\/span>
should be 50% of the height at the withers for males and a little less<\/span>
for females.<\/span>
BEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Calm appearance; attentive<\/span>
expression. Especially suited to guarding and traditionally used for<\/span>
herding cattle. Balanced temperament and very self-confident. Low<\/span>
and deep bark. Obedient and docile with family members, very<\/span>
devoted to its master, but can be suspicious of strangers. Confident<\/span>
attitude, noble and a little distant. When alert, the stance is firm with<\/span>
a vigilant attitude.<\/span>
HEAD<\/strong>: Massive, brachycephalic and compact in appearance,<\/span>
covered with thick skin. The shape tends towards a slightly<\/span>
elongated cube. The cranial-facial lines are parallel or slightly<\/span>
converging.<\/span>
CRANIAL REGION:<\/span>
Skull: Slightly convex in anteposterior and transversal direction.<\/span>
Frontal bone tends to be flat. The width is almost identical to the<\/span>
length. Pronounced zygomatic arch, with well developed cheek and<\/span>
jaw muscles, but not prominent, covered with loose skin. The<\/span>
occipital protuberance is only slightly marked.<\/span>
Stop: The stop is pronounced, but not abrupt. The furrow between<\/span>
the frontal lobes is well defined and is about two thirds the size of<\/span>
the skull.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION:<\/span>
Nose: Wide, strong black pigmentation. In line with the muzzle. The<\/span>
nostrils are large to facilitate breathing.<\/span>
Muzzle: Shorter than the skull, normally about 40% of the total<\/span>
length of the head. The width is 2\/3 of that of the skull. Very wide<\/span>
base, narrowing slightly towards the nose. Bridge of the nose is flat<\/span>
and straight, without ridges. <\/span>
Lips: The upper lip is pendulous, although not excessively. Seen<\/span>
from the front, the upper and lower lips come together to form an<\/span>
inverted V. The flews are slightly divergent. The inside of the lips is<\/span>
a dark colour.<\/span>
Jaws\/Teeth: Scissor bite or slightly undershot bite, max 2 mms.<\/span>
Pincer bite is admitted but not desirable due to the dental erosion<\/span>
produced. The dental arch is wide at the canines. The teeth are wide<\/span>
and solidly set. Large molars, small incisors, well developed canines.<\/span>
EYES<\/strong>: Slightly oval in shape, from medium to large in size. Set well<\/span>
apart, but neither sunken nor protruding. Eyelids are black and tightfitting, never sagging. The colour varies from dark to medium<\/span>
brown, depending on the colour of the coat. They should never be<\/span>
light.<\/span>
EARS<\/strong>: Medium sized, set well apart, with short and fine hair. They<\/span>
fall naturally on each side of the head. If folded, they are in the<\/span>
shape of a rose. They are set on slightly above eye level. Ears set too<\/span>
high and very close on the head are considered unusual. In countries<\/span>
were cropping is allowed, they must stand erect.<\/span>
NECK<\/strong>: Shorter than the length of the head. Skin on the underside is<\/span>
loose, forming a slight dewlap. Solid and straight, it tends to be<\/span>
cylindrical and muscular.<\/span>
BODY<\/strong>: Long, broad and deep.<\/span>
Top line: Straight, without deformations and sustained by well<\/span>
developed but barely visible muscles. Rising slightly from the<\/span>
withers to the croup. The height at the croup is 1 \u2013 2 cm more than<\/span>
the height at the withers.<\/span>
Croup: Medium length, broad and rounded. Should not be long as<\/span>
this would limit movement. The female is usually broader.<\/span>
Chest: With great capacity and well defined pectoral muscles. Seen<\/span>
from both the front and the side, it should be well let down to at least<\/span>
the elbow. Thoracic perimeter is usually equal to the height at the<\/span>
withers plus 45%. Well sprung ribcage. <\/span>
Underline and belly: Slightly tucked up, never sagging. The flanks<\/span>
are only slightly pronounced.<\/span>
TAIL<\/strong>: Thick base, tapering to the tip, down to the hock but no<\/span>
longer. Medium set on. In action it rises like a sabre, but without<\/span>
curling nor leaning towards the back. At rest it hangs straight with a<\/span>
slight curve at the tip.<\/span>
LIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
FOREQUARTERS:<\/span>
Shoulder: Well laid back.<\/span>
Upper arm: Well angulated, oblique.<\/span>
Forearm: Well balanced, straight. Strong boned and well muscled.<\/span>
Elbow: Must be neither too close to the ribs nor sticking out.<\/span>
Metacarpus (Pastern): Very solid and slightly sloping.<\/span>
Forefeet: Cat feet with rounded toes, not too close together. Well<\/span>
developed and black pads. Nails are dark, white nails should be<\/span>
avoided, although they can occur in function of coat colour.<\/span>
HINDQUARTERS:<\/span>
General appearance: Seen from behind, strong and parallel, without<\/span>
deviation.<\/span>
Thigh: Long and well muscled thighs.<\/span>
Stifle (Knee): Angulation not very pronounced but should not be<\/span>
insufficient.<\/span>
Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Always well let down.<\/span>
Hind feet: Slightly longer than the front feet, otherwise identical.<\/span>
GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: On the move, the Presa Canario is agile and<\/span>
supple and should cover a lot of ground. Long reach. The tail is<\/span>
carried low and the head is carried only a little above the level of the<\/span>
back. When alert, the head and tail are carried high.<\/span>
SKIN<\/strong>: Thick and elastic. More loose on and around the neck. When<\/span>
alert, the skin on the head forms symmetrical wrinkles which fan out<\/span>
from the furrow between the front lobes. <\/span><\/p>\n

COAT<\/strong>:<\/span>
Hair: Short, coarse, flat with no undercoat (it can appear on neck and<\/span>
on back of the thighs). Rather coarse to the touch. Very short and<\/span>
fine on the ears; slightly longer on the withers and on the back of<\/span>
thighs.<\/span>
Colour: All shades of brindle, from warm dark brown to pale grey or<\/span>
blond. All shades of fawn to sandy. White marks are acceptable on<\/span>
the chest, at the base of the neck or throat, forefeet and toes of hind<\/span>
feet, but these should be kept to a minimum. The mask is always<\/span>
black, and should not spread above eye level.<\/span>
SIZE AND WEIGHT:<\/span><\/strong>
Height at the withers: Males: 60 – 66 cm.<\/span>
Females: 56 – 62 cm.<\/span>
For very typical specimens, a tolerance of 2 cm. over or under these<\/span>
limits is accepted.<\/span>
Weight:<\/span>
Minimum: Males: 50 kg.<\/span>
Females: 40 kg.<\/span>
Maximum: Males: 65 kg.<\/span>
Females: 55 kg.<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a<\/span>
fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded<\/span>
should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the<\/span>
health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
\u2022 Pincer bite.<\/span>
SEVERE FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Any fault is considered severe when affecting the expression<\/span>
and limiting the type of the dog.<\/span>
\u2022 Incorrect head proportions. <\/span>
\u2022 Extremely convergent facial-cranial lines (over pronounced<\/span>
stop)<\/span>
\u2022 Loins and withers of the same height.<\/span>
\u2022 Incorrect position of limbs.<\/span>
\u2022 Square profile.<\/span>
\u2022 Triangular head, narrow (not cube shape).<\/span>
\u2022 Thin, curled or deformed tail. Set on high.<\/span>
\u2022 Saddle or roach back.<\/span>
\u2022 Light eyes (yellow), very close together or oblique, sunken or<\/span>
protruding.<\/span>
\u2022 Excessive undershot mouth.<\/span>
\u2022 Insufficient mask.<\/span>
\u2022 Missing teeth (except P1).<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural<\/span>
abnormalities.<\/span>
\u2022 Total depigmented nose.<\/span>
\u2022 Unacceptable white marks.<\/span>
\u2022 Overshot mouth.<\/span>
\u2022 Croup lower than withers. Sloping topline.<\/span>
\u2022 Blue eyes or unmatched in colour.<\/span>
\u2022 Cropped tail.<\/span>
N.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span>
conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
