BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong>: The Shiba has been a native<\/span>
breed to Japan since the primitive ages. The word \u00ab Shiba \u00bb<\/span>
originally refers to something \u00ab small \u00bb, a \u00ab small dog \u00bb. The<\/span>
Shiba\u2019s habitat was in the mountainous area facing the Sea of Japan<\/span>
and was used as a hunting dog for small animals and birds. There<\/span>
were slight differences in the breeds according to the areas where<\/span>
they were raised. As dogs like English Setters and English Pointers<\/span>
were imported from England during the period of 1868-1912,<\/span>
hunting became a sport in Japan and crossbreeding of the Shiba with<\/span>
those English dogs became prevalent and a pure Shiba became rare<\/span>
so that by 1912-1926 pure Shibas confined to these areas became<\/span>
exceedingly scarce. Hunters and other educated persons became<\/span>
concerned with the preservation of the pure Shibas from around 1928<\/span>
and the preservation of the limited number of pure strains began<\/span>
seriously, and the breed standard was finally unified in 1934. In<\/span>
1937 the Shiba was designated as a \u00ab natural monument \u00bb after<\/span>
which the breed was bred and improved to become the breed known<\/span>
today.<\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: Small-sized dog, well balanced, well<\/span>
boned with well developed muscles. Constitution strong. Action<\/span>
quick, free and beautiful. <\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: The ratio of height at withers to<\/span>
length of body is 10 : 11.<\/span>
BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: The temperament is faithful,<\/span>
with keenness in sense and high alertness.<\/span>
HEAD<\/span><\/strong>
CRANIAL REGION:<\/span>
Skull: Forehead broad.<\/span>
Stop: Well defined with slight furrow.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION:<\/span>
Nose: Black. Nasal bridge straight.<\/span>
Muzzle: Moderately thick.<\/span>
Lips: Tight.<\/span>
Jaws\/Teeth: Teeth strong with scissor bite.<\/span>
Cheeks: Well developed.<\/span>
Eyes: Triangular, not too small, and dark brown in colour. The outer<\/span>
corners of the eyes are slightly upturned.<\/span>
Ears: Relatively small, triangular, slightly inclining forward and<\/span>
firmly pricked.<\/span>
NECK<\/strong>: Thick, strong, and well balanced with the head and the body.<\/span>
BODY<\/strong>:<\/span>
Back: Straight and strong.<\/span>
Loin: Broad and muscular.<\/span>
Chest: Deep, ribs moderately sprung.<\/span>
Belly: Slightly tucked up.<\/span><\/p>\n

TAIL<\/strong>: Set on high, thick, carried vigorously curled or curved as a<\/span>
sickle, the tip nearly reaching hocks when let down. <\/span>
LIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
FOREQUARTERS:<\/span>
General appearance: Seen from the front, forelegs straight.<\/span>
Shoulder: Shoulder blade moderately sloping.<\/span>
Upper arm: Forming a moderate angle with shoulder blade.<\/span>
Elbow: Tight.<\/span>
Metacarpus (Pastern): Slightly oblique.<\/span>
Feet: Digits tightly closed and well arched. Pads thick and elastic.<\/span>
Nails hard and dark in colour desirable.<\/span>
HINDQUARTERS:<\/span>
Upper thigh: Well developed.<\/span>
Lower thigh: Well developed.<\/span>
Hocks: Thick and tough.<\/span>
Feet: Digits tightly closed and well arched. Pads thick and elastic.<\/span>
Nails hard and dark in colour desirable.<\/span>
GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Light and brisk.<\/span>
COAT<\/span><\/strong>
Hair: Outer coat harsh and straight, undercoat soft and dense; hair on<\/span>
tail slightly long and standing off.<\/span>
Colour: Red, black and tan, sesame, black sesame, red sesame.<\/span>
Definition of the colour sesame:<\/span>
\u2022 Sesame: Good mixture of black, red and white hairs in whole.<\/span>
\u2022 Black sesame: More black than white hairs.<\/span>
\u2022 Red sesame: Ground colour of hair red, mixture with black hairs.<\/span>
All the above mentioned colours must have \u00ab Urajiro \u00bb.<\/span>
\u00ab Urajiro \u00bb : Whitish coat on the sides of the muzzle and on the<\/span>
cheeks, on the underside of the jaw and neck, on the chest and<\/span>
stomach and the underside of the tail, and on the inside of the legs. <\/span>
SIZE AND WEIGHT:<\/span><\/strong>
Height at withers: Males 39.5 cm.<\/span>
Females 36.5 cm.<\/span>
There is a tolerance of 1,5 cm smaller or taller.<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
\u2022 Lack of sexual dimorphism.<\/span>
\u2022 Slightly overshot or undershot mouth.<\/span>
\u2022 Numerous teeth missing.<\/span>
\u2022 Shyness.<\/span>
\u2022 Pinto colour.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Aggresive or overly shy.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span>
shall be disqualified.<\/span>
\u2022 Extremely overshot or undershot mouth.<\/span>
\u2022 Ears not pricked.<\/span>
\u2022 Hanging tail, short tail.<\/span>
N.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span>
conformation, should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
