BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

The small, so called Brabant<\/span>
\nBullenbeisser is regarded as the immediate ancestor of the Boxer. In<\/span>
\nthe past, the breeding of these Bullenbeissers was in the hands of the<\/span>
\nhuntsmen, whom they assisted during the hunt. Their task was to<\/span>
\nseize the game put up by the hounds and hold it firmly until the<\/span>
\nhuntsman arrived and put an end to the prey. For this job the dog<\/span>
\nhad to have jaws as wide as possible with widely spaced teeth, in<\/span>
\norder to bite firmly and hold on tightly. A Bullenbeisser which had<\/span>
\nthese characteristics was best suited to this job and was used for<\/span>
\nbreeding. Previously, only the ability to work and utilization were<\/span>
\nconsidered. Selective breeding was carried out which produced a<\/span>
\ndog with a wide muzzle and an upturned nose.<\/span><\/p>\n

GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The Boxer is a medium sized,<\/span>
\nsmooth coated, sturdy dog of compact, square build and strong bone.<\/span>
\nHis muscles are taut, strongly developed and moulded in appearance. <\/span>
\nHis movement is lively, powerful with noble bearing. The Boxer<\/span>
\nmust be neither cumbersome nor heavy, nor light or lacking in body<\/span>
\nsubstance.<\/span><\/p>\n

IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> <\/span><\/h4>\n

a) Length of body \/ Height at withers : Square build, which means<\/span>
\nthat the horizontal line of the back is perpendicular to the vertical<\/span>
\nline passing through the point of shoulder and to the other vertical<\/span>
\nline passing through the point of buttock, thus defining a square<\/span>
\noutline.<\/span>
\nb) Depth of brisket \/ Height at withers : The chest reaches to the<\/span>
\nelbows. Depth of chest is half the height at withers.<\/span>
\nc) Length of nose bridge \/ Length of head : Length of nose bridge in<\/span>
\nrelation to skull should be 1 : 2 (measured respectively from tip of<\/span>
\nnose to inner corner of eye and from inner corner of eye to occiput).<\/span><\/p>\n

BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The Boxer should be fearless<\/span>
\nself-confident, calm and equable. Temperament is of the utmost<\/span>
\nimportance and requires careful attention. Devotion and loyalty<\/span>
\ntowards his master and his entire household, his watchfulness and<\/span>
\nself-assured courage as a defender are famous. He is harmless with<\/span>
\nhis family but distrustful of strangers. Happy and friendly in play,<\/span>
\nyet fearless in a serious situation. Easy to train on account of his<\/span>
\nwillingness to obey, his pluck and courage, natural keenness and<\/span>
\nscent capability. Undemanding and clean, he is just as agreeable and<\/span>
\nappreciated in the family circle as he is as a guard, companion and<\/span>
\nworking dog. His character is trustworthy, with no guile or cunning,<\/span>
\neven in old age.<\/span><\/p>\n

HEAD<\/strong> <\/span><\/h4>\n

This gives the Boxer his characteristic look. Must be in<\/span>
\ngood proportion to the body and appear neither too light nor too<\/span>
\nheavy. Muzzle should be as broad and powerful as possible. The<\/span>
\nharmony of the head depends on the balance between muzzle and<\/span>
\nskull. <\/span>
\nFrom whichever direction the head is viewed, from front, above or<\/span>
\nsideways, the muzzle must always be in the right proportion to the<\/span>
\nskull i.e. it must never appear too small. It should be clean, not<\/span>
\nshowing any wrinkle. However, natural folds are formed in the<\/span>
\ncranial region when alerted. From root of nose, folds are always<\/span>
\nindicated running in a downward direction on both sides. The dark<\/span>
\nmask is confined to the muzzle and must be in sharp contrast to the<\/span>
\ncolour of the head so that the face does not appear sombre.<\/span>
\nCRANIAL REGION :<\/span>
\nSkull : The cranial region should be as lean and angular as possible.<\/span>
\nIt is slightly arched, neither too round and short, nor flat; nor should<\/span>
\nit be too broad. Occiput not too pronounced. Furrow in forehead<\/span>
\nonly slightly marked, must not be too deep, especially between the<\/span>
\neyes.<\/span>
\nStop : The forehead forms a distinct stop with the bridge of nose.<\/span>
\nBridge of nose must not be forced back into the forehead as in the<\/span>
\nBulldog, nor should it be downfaced.<\/span>
\nFACIAL REGION :<\/span>
\nNose : Nose is broad and black and only slightly turned up with wide<\/span>
\nnostrils. Tip of nose is placed slightly higher than root of nose.<\/span>
\nMuzzle : The muzzle is powerfully developed in three dimensional<\/span>
\nvolume, neither pointed nor narrow, nor short or shallow. Its<\/span>
\nappearance is influenced by :<\/span>
\na) Shape of jaw. b) Position of canine teeth. c) Shape of lips. The<\/span>
\ncanines must be placed as far apart as possible and must be of good<\/span>
\nlength, making the front of the muzzle broad, almost square and<\/span>
\nforming a blunt angle with bridge of nose.<\/span>
\nIn front, the edge of the upper lip rests on the edge of the lower lip.<\/span>
\nThe part of the lower jaw with lower lip curved upwards, called the<\/span>
\nchin, must not markedly protrude over upper lip, seen from front.<\/span>
\nNor should it be hidden by the upper lip but should be well defined<\/span>
\nfrom front and side. <\/span>
\nThe canines and incisors of the lower jaw must not be visible when<\/span>
\nmouth is closed, neither should the tongue show. Median groove in<\/span>
\nthe upper lip (philtrum) is clearly visible.<\/span>
\nLips : The lips complete the shape of the muzzle. The upper lip is<\/span>
\nthick and padded and fills the space formed by the undershot lower<\/span>
\njaw; it is supported by the lower canines.<\/span>
\nJaws\/Teeth : The lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw and is<\/span>
\ncurved slightly upwards. The Boxer is undershot. The upper jaw is<\/span>
\nbroad where it joins the cranial region, tapering only slightly towards<\/span>
\nthe front. The teeth are strong and healthy. The incisors are as even<\/span>
\nas possible, set in a straight line. Canines wide apart and of good<\/span>
\nsize.<\/span>
\nCheeks : Cheeks are developed in proportion with the strong jaws<\/span>
\nwithout markedly bulging. They merge with the muzzle in a slight<\/span>
\ncurve.<\/span>
\nEyes : The dark eyes are neither too small nor protruding or deep set.<\/span>
\nTheir expression conveys energy and intelligence and must not be<\/span>
\nthreatening or piercing. Eye rims must be dark.<\/span>
\nEars : The natural ears are of appropriate size. They are set on wide<\/span>
\napart on highest part of skull. In repose they lie close to the cheeks<\/span>
\nand turn forward with a definite crease, especially when the dog is<\/span>
\nalert.<\/span>
\nNECK<\/strong> : Topline runs in an elegant arch from the clearly marked<\/span>
\nnape to the withers. It should be of ample length, round, strong and<\/span>
\nmuscular.<\/span><\/p>\n

BODY<\/strong> <\/span><\/h4>\n

Square body resting on sturdy, straight legs.<\/span>
\nWithers : Should be marked.<\/span>
\nBack : Including loin should be short, firm, straight, broad and<\/span>
\nmuscular.<\/span>
\nCroup : Slightly sloping, broad and only slightly arched. Pelvis<\/span>
\nshould be long and broad, especially in bitches.<\/span>
\nChest : Deep, reaching to elbows. Depth of chest is half the height at<\/span>
\nwithers. Well developed forechest. Ribs well sprung but not barrelshaped, extending well to the rear. <\/span>
\nUnderline : Running towards rear in elegant curve. Short, taut flanks<\/span>
\nslightly tucked up.<\/span><\/p>\n

TAIL<\/strong> : Set on high rather than low. The tail is of normal length<\/span>
\nand left natural.<\/span>
\nLIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
\nFOREQUARTERS :<\/span>
\nGeneral appearance : Front legs, seen from front, must stand parallel<\/span>
\nand have strong bone.<\/span>
\nShoulders : Long and sloping, connected firmly to body. Should not<\/span>
\nbe too loaded.<\/span>
\nUpper arm : Long, making a right angle to shoulder blade.<\/span>
\nElbows : Neither too close to side of chest nor turned out.<\/span>
\nForearm : Vertical, long, lean and muscled.<\/span>
\nCarpus (wrist) : Strong, well defined, but not exaggerated.<\/span>
\nMetacarpus (Pastern) : Short, almost perpendicular to ground.<\/span>
\nFront feet : Small, round, tight, well cushioned and hard pads.<\/span>
\nHINDQUARTERS :<\/span>
\nGeneral appearance : Very muscular, the muscles brick hard and<\/span>
\nvisible under the skin.<\/span>
\nHindlegs : Seen from rear : straight.<\/span>
\nThigh : Long and broad. Angles of hip and knee are open but as<\/span>
\nlittle as possible.<\/span>
\nKnee (Stifle) : When dog is standing, should reach sufficiently<\/span>
\nforward so that it would touch a perpendicular line from point of hip<\/span>
\nto ground.<\/span>
\nLower thigh : Very muscular.<\/span>
\nHock : Strong and well defined but not exaggerated. Angle<\/span>
\napproximately 140 degrees.<\/span>
\nMetatarsus (Rear Pastern) : Short with slight inclination, 95-100<\/span>
\ndegrees to the ground.<\/span>
\nHind feet : Slightly longer than front feet, tight; well cushioned and<\/span>
\nhard pads.<\/span><\/p>\n

GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong> : Lively, full of strength and nobility.<\/span><\/p>\n

SKIN<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Dry, elastic without any wrinkles.<\/span>
\nCOAT<\/span><\/strong>
\nHAIR : Short, hard, glossy and close fitting.<\/span>
\nCOLOUR : Fawn or brindle : Fawn comes in various shades from<\/span>
\nlight fawn to dark deer red but the most attractive shades are in the<\/span>
\nmiddle range (red fawn). Black mask. The brindle variety : fawn<\/span>
\nbackground of varying shades has dark or black stripes running<\/span>
\nparallel to ribs. Stripes must contrast distinctly to ground colour.<\/span>
\nWhite markings should not be discarded. They can be quite pleasant.<\/span>
\nSIZE AND WEIGHT<\/strong> :<\/span>
\nHeight at the withers : Dogs : 57-63 cm.<\/span>
\nFemales : 53-59 cm.<\/span>
\nWeight : Dogs : over 30 kg when height at withers is ca 60 cm.<\/span>
\nBitches : about 25 kg when height at withers is ca 56 cm.<\/span><\/p>\n

FAULTS<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
\nconsidered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
\nregarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
\nupon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Behaviour \/ Temperament : Lack of spirit.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Head : Lack of nobility and typical expression, sombre face,<\/span>
\nPinscher or Bulldog type head. Dribbling, showing of teeth<\/span>
\nor tongue. Muzzle too pointed or slight. Bridge of nose<\/span>
\nfalling away. Leather or weather nose, pale nose leather. So<\/span>
\ncalled, \u201chawk eye\u201d, lack of pigment in haw.<\/span>
\nIn uncropped ears : Flying, half erect or erect ears, rose ears.<\/span>
\nWry jaw, slanting teeth, incorrect position of teeth, poorly<\/span>
\ndeveloped teeth and unsound teeth due to illness.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Neck : Short, thick and throaty. <\/span>
\n\u2022 Body : Front too broad or low to the ground. Sagging body,<\/span>
\nroach or sway back. Lean, long, narrow, sagging loin,<\/span>
\nloosely coupled body.<\/span>
\nArched loin, croup falling away. Narrow pelvis, hollow<\/span>
\nflanks, pendulous belly.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Tail : Low set on, kink tail.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Forequarters: French front, loose shoulders, loose elbows,<\/span>
\nweak pastern, hare foot, flat, splayed feet.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Hindquarters : Weak muscles. Too much or too little<\/span>
\nangulation, down on hocks, barrel hocks, cow hocks, narrow<\/span>
\nhocks, dewclaws, hare foot, flat, splayed feet.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Movement : Waddling, insufficient reach, pacing, stilted<\/span>
\ngait.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Colour of coat : Mask extending beyond muzzle. Stripes<\/span>
\n(brindling) too close together or too sparse.<\/span>
\nSooty ground colour. Mingled colours. Unattractive white<\/span>
\nmarkings such as a entirely white head or white on one side<\/span>
\nof the head. Other colours and white markings exceeding<\/span>
\none third of the ground colour.<\/span>
\nDISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural<\/span>
\nabnormalities shall be disqualified.<\/span>
\nN.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles<\/span>
\nfully descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed<\/span>
\ntypical conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
