In<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">the past, the breeding of these Bullenbeissers was in the hands of the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">huntsmen, whom they assisted during the hunt. Their task was to<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">seize the game put up by the hounds and hold it firmly until the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">huntsman arrived and put an end to the prey. For this job the dog<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">had to have jaws as wide as possible with widely spaced teeth, in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">order to bite firmly and hold on tightly. A Bullenbeisser which had<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">these characteristics was best suited to this job and was used for<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">breeding. Previously, only the ability to work and utilization were<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered. Selective breeding was carried out which produced a<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">dog with a wide muzzle and an upturned nose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> The Boxer is a medium sized,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">smooth coated, sturdy dog of compact, square build and strong bone.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">His muscles are taut, strongly developed and moulded in appearance. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">His movement is lively, powerful with noble bearing. The Boxer<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">must be neither cumbersome nor heavy, nor light or lacking in body<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">substance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> <\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a) Length of body \/ Height at withers : Square build, which means<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">that the horizontal line of the back is perpendicular to the vertical<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">line passing through the point of shoulder and to the other vertical<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">line passing through the point of buttock, thus defining a square<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">outline.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">b) Depth of brisket \/ Height at withers : The chest reaches to the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">elbows. Depth of chest is half the height at withers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">c) Length of nose bridge \/ Length of head : Length of nose bridge in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">relation to skull should be 1 : 2 (measured respectively from tip of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">nose to inner corner of eye and from inner corner of eye to occiput).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> The Boxer should be fearless<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">self-confident, calm and equable. Temperament is of the utmost<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">importance and requires careful attention. Devotion and loyalty<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">towards his master and his entire household, his watchfulness and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">self-assured courage as a defender are famous. He is harmless with<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">his family but distrustful of strangers. Happy and friendly in play,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">yet fearless in a serious situation. Easy to train on account of his<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">willingness to obey, his pluck and courage, natural keenness and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">scent capability. Undemanding and clean, he is just as agreeable and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">appreciated in the family circle as he is as a guard, companion and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">working dog. His character is trustworthy, with no guile or cunning,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">even in old age.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong> <\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This gives the Boxer his characteristic look. Must be in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">good proportion to the body and appear neither too light nor too<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">heavy. Muzzle should be as broad and powerful as possible. The<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">harmony of the head depends on the balance between muzzle and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">skull. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">From whichever direction the head is viewed, from front, above or<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">sideways, the muzzle must always be in the right proportion to the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">skull i.e. it must never appear too small. It should be clean, not<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">showing any wrinkle. However, natural folds are formed in the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">cranial region when alerted. From root of nose, folds are always<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">indicated running in a downward direction on both sides. The dark<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">mask is confined to the muzzle and must be in sharp contrast to the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">colour of the head so that the face does not appear sombre.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull : The cranial region should be as lean and angular as possible.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is slightly arched, neither too round and short, nor flat; nor should<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">it be too broad. Occiput not too pronounced. Furrow in forehead<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">only slightly marked, must not be too deep, especially between the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">eyes.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop : The forehead forms a distinct stop with the bridge of nose.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bridge of nose must not be forced back into the forehead as in the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bulldog, nor should it be downfaced.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose : Nose is broad and black and only slightly turned up with wide<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">nostrils. Tip of nose is placed slightly higher than root of nose.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle : The muzzle is powerfully developed in three dimensional<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">volume, neither pointed nor narrow, nor short or shallow. Its<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">appearance is influenced by :<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">a) Shape of jaw. b) Position of canine teeth. c) Shape of lips. The<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">canines must be placed as far apart as possible and must be of good<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">length, making the front of the muzzle broad, almost square and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">forming a blunt angle with bridge of nose.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">In front, the edge of the upper lip rests on the edge of the lower lip.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The part of the lower jaw with lower lip curved upwards, called the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">chin, must not markedly protrude over upper lip, seen from front.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nor should it be hidden by the upper lip but should be well defined<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">from front and side. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The canines and incisors of the lower jaw must not be visible when<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">mouth is closed, neither should the tongue show. Median groove in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">the upper lip (philtrum) is clearly visible.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips : The lips complete the shape of the muzzle. The upper lip is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">thick and padded and fills the space formed by the undershot lower<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">jaw; it is supported by the lower canines.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth : The lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw and is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">curved slightly upwards. The Boxer is undershot. The upper jaw is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">broad where it joins the cranial region, tapering only slightly towards<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">the front. The teeth are strong and healthy. The incisors are as even<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">as possible, set in a straight line. Canines wide apart and of good<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">size.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheeks : Cheeks are developed in proportion with the strong jaws<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">without markedly bulging. They merge with the muzzle in a slight<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">curve.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes : The dark eyes are neither too small nor protruding or deep set.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their expression conveys energy and intelligence and must not be<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">threatening or piercing. Eye rims must be dark.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears : The natural ears are of appropriate size. They are set on wide<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">apart on highest part of skull. In repose they lie close to the cheeks<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and turn forward with a definite crease, especially when the dog is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">alert.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong> : Topline runs in an elegant arch from the clearly marked<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">nape to the withers. It should be of ample length, round, strong and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">muscular.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong> <\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Square body resting on sturdy, straight legs.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers : Should be marked.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back : Including loin should be short, firm, straight, broad and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">muscular.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup : Slightly sloping, broad and only slightly arched. Pelvis<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">should be long and broad, especially in bitches.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest : Deep, reaching to elbows. Depth of chest is half the height at<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">withers. Well developed forechest. Ribs well sprung but not barrelshaped, extending well to the rear. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline : Running towards rear in elegant curve. Short, taut flanks<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly tucked up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong> : Set on high rather than low. The tail is of normal length<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and left natural.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance : Front legs, seen from front, must stand parallel<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and have strong bone.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulders : Long and sloping, connected firmly to body. Should not<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">be too loaded.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm : Long, making a right angle to shoulder blade.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbows : Neither too close to side of chest nor turned out.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm : Vertical, long, lean and muscled.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carpus (wrist) : Strong, well defined, but not exaggerated.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metacarpus (Pastern) : Short, almost perpendicular to ground.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Front feet : Small, round, tight, well cushioned and hard pads.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance : Very muscular, the muscles brick hard and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">visible under the skin.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hindlegs : Seen from rear : straight.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh : Long and broad. Angles of hip and knee are open but as<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">little as possible.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Knee (Stifle) : When dog is standing, should reach sufficiently<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">forward so that it would touch a perpendicular line from point of hip<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">to ground.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh : Very muscular.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock : Strong and well defined but not exaggerated. Angle<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">approximately 140 degrees.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus (Rear Pastern) : Short with slight inclination, 95-100<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">degrees to the ground.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet : Slightly longer than front feet, tight; well cushioned and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">hard pads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong> : Lively, full of strength and nobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Dry, elastic without any wrinkles.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">HAIR : Short, hard, glossy and close fitting.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">COLOUR : Fawn or brindle : Fawn comes in various shades from<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">light fawn to dark deer red but the most attractive shades are in the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">middle range (red fawn). Black mask. The brindle variety : fawn<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">background of varying shades has dark or black stripes running<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">parallel to ribs. Stripes must contrast distinctly to ground colour.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">White markings should not be discarded. Dribbling, showing of teeth<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">or tongue. Muzzle too pointed or slight. Bridge of nose<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">falling away. Leather or weather nose, pale nose leather. So<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">called, \u201chawk eye\u201d, lack of pigment in haw.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">In uncropped ears : Flying, half erect or erect ears, rose ears.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wry jaw, slanting teeth, incorrect position of teeth, poorly<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">developed teeth and unsound teeth due to illness.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Neck : Short, thick and throaty. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Body : Front too broad or low to the ground. Sagging body,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">roach or sway back. Lean, long, narrow, sagging loin,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">loosely coupled body.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Arched loin, croup falling away. Narrow pelvis, hollow<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">flanks, pendulous belly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tail : Low set on, kink tail.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Forequarters: French front, loose shoulders, loose elbows,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">weak pastern, hare foot, flat, splayed feet.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Hindquarters : Weak muscles. Unattractive white<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">markings such as a entirely white head or white on one side<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the head. Other colours and white markings exceeding<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">one third of the ground colour.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or
