The head is in proportion to the size of the dog<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the expression indicates a high degree of intelligence. The body<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is rather short and well knit, the limbs strong and neatly turned, the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tail is short and no feature is so prominent that the dog appears badly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">proportioned. The dog conveys an impression of determination,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strength and activity, with style of a high order; carriage easy and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">graceful. A proportionate combination of \u00ab Colour and White<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Markings \u00bb is a particularly distinctive feature of a representative<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">specimen.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00ab Balance, Expression, Colour and White Markings \u00bb should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">given particular consideration in determining the relative value of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">general appearance to other points.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The clean-cut short backed body of the Boston Terrier coupled with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the unique characteristics of his square head and jaw, and his striking<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">markings have resulted in a most dapper and charming American<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">original : The Boston Terrier.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In a comparison of specimens of each sex, the only evident<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">difference is a slight refinement in the bitch\u2019s conformation. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> : The length of leg must balance<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with the length of body to give the Boston Terrier its striking square<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">appearance. The Boston Terrier is a sturdy dog and must not appear<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to be either spindly or coarse. The bone and muscle must be in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">proportion as well as an enhancement to the dog\u2019s weight and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">structure.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : The Boston Terrier is a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">friendly and lively dog. The breed has an excellent disposition and a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">high degree of intelligence, which makes the Boston Terrier an<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">incomparable companion.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HEAD<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull : Square, flat on top, free from wrinkles; brow abrupt.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop : Well defined.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose : Black and wide, with a well defined line between the nostrils.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Well opened nostrils.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle : Short, square, wide and deep and in proportion to the skull.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is free from wrinkles, shorter in length than in width or depth; not<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">exceeding in length approximately one-third of the length of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">skull. The muzzle from stop to end of the nose is parallel to the top<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the skull.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips : The chops are of good depth, but not pendulous, completely<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">covering the teeth when the mouth is closed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth : Jaws broad and square with short, regular teeth. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bite is even or sufficiently undershot to square the muzzle.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheeks : Flat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes : Wide apart, large, round and dark in colour. Set square in the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">skull and the outside corners are on a line with the cheeks as viewed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from the front.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Expression : Alert and kind, indicating a high degree of intelligence.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is a most important characteristic of the breed. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears : Small, carried erect, either natural or cropped to conform to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the shape of the head and situated as near to the corners of the skull<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">as possible.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong> : The length of the neck must display an image of balance to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the total dog. It is slightly arched, carrying the head gracefully and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">setting neatly into the shoulders.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong> : The body should appear short.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Top line : Level.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back : Just short enough to square the body.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup : Curves slightly to the set-on of the tail.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest : Deep with good width; ribs well sprung and carried well back<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to the loins.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong> : Set-on low, short, fine and tapering, straight or screw and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">must not be carried above the horizontal. (Note : The preferred tail<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">does not exceed in length more than one quarter the distance from<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">set-on to hock).<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance : Forelegs set moderately wide apart and on a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">line with the upper tip of the shoulder-blades; straight in bone.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulders : Sloping and well laid back, which allows for the Boston<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Terrier\u2019s stylish movement.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbows : Stand neither in nor out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pasterns : Short, strong. The dewclaws may be removed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet : Small, round and compact, turned neither in nor out, with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">well arched toes and short nails.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thighs : Strong, well muscled, and set true.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifles : Well bent.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hocks : Short to the feet, turning neither in nor out, with a well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">defined hock joint. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet : Small and compact with short nails.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong> : The gait of the Boston Terrier is that of a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sure footed, straight gaited dog, forelegs and hind legs moving<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">straight ahead in line with perfect rhythm, each step indicating grace<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and power.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HAIR : Short, smooth, bright and fine in texture.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COLOUR : Brindle, seal or black with white markings. Brindle is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">preferred only if all other qualities are equal. (Note : Seal defined :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Seal appears black except it has a red cast when viewed in the sun or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bright light).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Required markings : White muzzle band, white blaze between the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">eyes, white forechest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Desired markings : White muzzle band, even white blaze between<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the eyes and over the head, white collar, white forechest, white on<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">part or whole of forelegs and hind legs below the hocks. (Note : a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">representative specimen should not be penalized for not possessing<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00ab Desired Markings \u00bb.)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A dog with a preponderance of white on the head or body must<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">possess sufficient merit otherwise to counteract its deficiencies.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>WEIGHT<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight is divided by classes as follows :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 under 15 pounds (6,8 kg),<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 15 pounds and under 20 pounds (6,8 to 9 kg),<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: proportion to size of head.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Gaily carried tail.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Legs lacking in substance.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Straight in stifle.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Splay feet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Gait rolling, paddling or weaving; hackney gait.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SERIOUS FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Wry mouth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any showing of the tongue or teeth when the mouth is closed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Roach back or sway back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Ribcage slab-sided. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Gait : Any crossing movement, either front or rear.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shall be disqualified.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Dudley nose.<\/span><br \/><span black, solid brindle, or solid seal without required white<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">markings.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Grey or liver
