GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : The Boston Terrier is a lively, highly<\/span>
intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, shorttailed, well balanced dog, brindle, seal or black in colour and evenly<\/span>
marked with white. The head is in proportion to the size of the dog<\/span>
and the expression indicates a high degree of intelligence. The body<\/span>
is rather short and well knit, the limbs strong and neatly turned, the<\/span>
tail is short and no feature is so prominent that the dog appears badly<\/span>
proportioned. The dog conveys an impression of determination,<\/span>
strength and activity, with style of a high order; carriage easy and<\/span>
graceful. A proportionate combination of \u00ab Colour and White<\/span>
Markings \u00bb is a particularly distinctive feature of a representative<\/span>
specimen.<\/span>
\u00ab Balance, Expression, Colour and White Markings \u00bb should be<\/span>
given particular consideration in determining the relative value of<\/span>
general appearance to other points.<\/span>
The clean-cut short backed body of the Boston Terrier coupled with<\/span>
the unique characteristics of his square head and jaw, and his striking<\/span>
markings have resulted in a most dapper and charming American<\/span>
original : The Boston Terrier.<\/span>
In a comparison of specimens of each sex, the only evident<\/span>
difference is a slight refinement in the bitch\u2019s conformation. <\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> : The length of leg must balance<\/span>
with the length of body to give the Boston Terrier its striking square<\/span>
appearance. The Boston Terrier is a sturdy dog and must not appear<\/span>
to be either spindly or coarse. The bone and muscle must be in<\/span>
proportion as well as an enhancement to the dog\u2019s weight and<\/span>
structure.<\/span>
BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : The Boston Terrier is a<\/span>
friendly and lively dog. The breed has an excellent disposition and a<\/span>
high degree of intelligence, which makes the Boston Terrier an<\/span>
incomparable companion.<\/span>
HEAD<\/span><\/strong>
CRANIAL REGION :<\/span>
Skull : Square, flat on top, free from wrinkles; brow abrupt.<\/span>
Stop : Well defined.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION :<\/span>
Nose : Black and wide, with a well defined line between the nostrils.<\/span>
Well opened nostrils.<\/span>
Muzzle : Short, square, wide and deep and in proportion to the skull.<\/span>
It is free from wrinkles, shorter in length than in width or depth; not<\/span>
exceeding in length approximately one-third of the length of the<\/span>
skull. The muzzle from stop to end of the nose is parallel to the top<\/span>
of the skull.<\/span>
Lips : The chops are of good depth, but not pendulous, completely<\/span>
covering the teeth when the mouth is closed.<\/span>
Jaws\/Teeth : Jaws broad and square with short, regular teeth. The<\/span>
bite is even or sufficiently undershot to square the muzzle.<\/span>
Cheeks : Flat.<\/span>
Eyes : Wide apart, large, round and dark in colour. Set square in the<\/span>
skull and the outside corners are on a line with the cheeks as viewed<\/span>
from the front.<\/span>
Expression : Alert and kind, indicating a high degree of intelligence.<\/span>
This is a most important characteristic of the breed. <\/span>
Ears : Small, carried erect, either natural or cropped to conform to<\/span>
the shape of the head and situated as near to the corners of the skull<\/span>
as possible.<\/span>
NECK<\/strong> : The length of the neck must display an image of balance to<\/span>
the total dog. It is slightly arched, carrying the head gracefully and<\/span>
setting neatly into the shoulders.<\/span>
BODY<\/strong> : The body should appear short.<\/span>
Top line : Level.<\/span>
Back : Just short enough to square the body.<\/span>
Croup : Curves slightly to the set-on of the tail.<\/span>
Chest : Deep with good width; ribs well sprung and carried well back<\/span>
to the loins.<\/span>
TAIL<\/strong> : Set-on low, short, fine and tapering, straight or screw and<\/span>
must not be carried above the horizontal. (Note : The preferred tail<\/span>
does not exceed in length more than one quarter the distance from<\/span>
set-on to hock).<\/span>
LIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
FOREQUARTERS :<\/span>
General appearance : Forelegs set moderately wide apart and on a<\/span>
line with the upper tip of the shoulder-blades; straight in bone.<\/span>
Shoulders : Sloping and well laid back, which allows for the Boston<\/span>
Terrier\u2019s stylish movement.<\/span>
Elbows : Stand neither in nor out.<\/span>
Pasterns : Short, strong. The dewclaws may be removed.<\/span>
Forefeet : Small, round and compact, turned neither in nor out, with<\/span>
well arched toes and short nails.<\/span>
HINDQUARTERS :<\/span>
Thighs : Strong, well muscled, and set true.<\/span>
Stifles : Well bent.<\/span>
Hocks : Short to the feet, turning neither in nor out, with a well<\/span>
defined hock joint. <\/span>
Hind feet : Small and compact with short nails.<\/span>
GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong> : The gait of the Boston Terrier is that of a<\/span>
sure footed, straight gaited dog, forelegs and hind legs moving<\/span>
straight ahead in line with perfect rhythm, each step indicating grace<\/span>
and power.<\/span>
COAT<\/span><\/strong>
HAIR : Short, smooth, bright and fine in texture.<\/span>
COLOUR : Brindle, seal or black with white markings. Brindle is<\/span>
preferred only if all other qualities are equal. (Note : Seal defined :<\/span>
Seal appears black except it has a red cast when viewed in the sun or<\/span>
bright light).<\/span>
Required markings : White muzzle band, white blaze between the<\/span>
eyes, white forechest.<\/span>
Desired markings : White muzzle band, even white blaze between<\/span>
the eyes and over the head, white collar, white forechest, white on<\/span>
part or whole of forelegs and hind legs below the hocks. (Note : a<\/span>
representative specimen should not be penalized for not possessing<\/span>
\u00ab Desired Markings \u00bb.)<\/span>
A dog with a preponderance of white on the head or body must<\/span>
possess sufficient merit otherwise to counteract its deficiencies.<\/span>
WEIGHT<\/strong> :<\/span>
Weight is divided by classes as follows :<\/span>
\u2022 under 15 pounds (6,8 kg),<\/span>
\u2022 15 pounds and under 20 pounds (6,8 to 9 kg),<\/span>
\u2022 20 pounds and not to exceed 25 pounds (9 to 11,35 kg). <\/span><\/p>\n

SERIOUS FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span>
\u2022 Wry mouth.<\/span>
\u2022 Any showing of the tongue or teeth when the mouth is closed.<\/span>
\u2022 Roach back or sway back.<\/span>
\u2022 Ribcage slab-sided. <\/span>
\u2022 Gait : Any crossing movement, either front or rear.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span>
shall be disqualified.<\/span>
\u2022 Dudley nose.<\/span>
\u2022 Eyes blue in colour or any trace of blue.<\/span>
\u2022 Docked tail.<\/span>
\u2022 Solid black, solid brindle, or solid seal without required white<\/span>
markings.<\/span>
\u2022 Grey or liver colours.<\/span>
N.B<\/strong>.:<\/span>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span>
conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
