UTILIZATION<\/strong> : Originally used as a guard-, draught-and cattle<\/span>
dog on farms in the Canton Bern, today also family dog and versatile<\/span>
working dog.<\/span>

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong> : The Bernese Mountain Dog<\/span>
is a farm dog of ancestral origin which was used as a guard and<\/span>
draught dog and for driving cattle in the prealpine regions and in the<\/span>
midland areas around Bern. Originally he was named \u201cD\u00fcrrb\u00e4chler\u201d<\/span>
according to the name of the hamlet and of the inn of D\u00fcrrbach, near<\/span>
Riggisberg in the Canton Bern where these long-haired tricoloured<\/span>
farm dogs were especially numerous. In 1902, 1904 and 1907<\/span>
specimen of this breed had already been exhibited at dog shows, and<\/span>
in 1907 some breeders of the region of Burgdorf decided to promote<\/span>
the pure breeding of these dogs by founding the \u201cSchweizerischer<\/span>
D\u00fcrrbach-Klub\u201d, and fixing the characteristic traits of the breed. In<\/span>
1910, at a show in Burgdorf where many farmers of that region<\/span>
brought their D\u00fcrrb\u00e4chler dogs to, already 107 specimen were<\/span>
shown.<\/span>
From that day onward this dog, renamed \u201cBernese Mountain Dog\u201d<\/span>
following the example of the other breeds of Swiss Mountain Dogs, <\/span>
became rapidly appreciated all over Switzerland and in the<\/span>
neighbouring parts of Germany. Today the Bernese Mountain Dog<\/span>
is well known and appreciated all over the world as a family dog<\/span>
thanks to its striking tricoloured coat and its great adaptability.<\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : Longhaired, tricoloured, strong and<\/span>
agile working dog, of above medium size, with sturdily built limbs;<\/span>
harmonious and well balanced.<\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> :<\/span>
\u2022 Height at withers : length of body (measured from the point<\/span>
of the shoulder to the point of the buttock) = 9 : 10, rather<\/span>
compact than elongated.<\/span>
\u2022 Ideal relation of height at withers : depth of chest = 2 : 1.<\/span>
BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : Self-confident, attentive,<\/span>
vigilant, fearless in every day situations; good-natured and devoted<\/span>
to his own people, self-assured and placid towards strangers ; of<\/span>
medium temperament, docile.<\/span>
HEAD<\/strong> : Strong. In size balanced to general appearance, not too<\/span>
massive.<\/span>
CRANIAL REGION :<\/span>
Skull : Viewed from the front and in profile little rounded. Frontal<\/span>
furrow hardly marked.<\/span>
Stop : Well defined, but without being too pronounced.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION :<\/span>
Nose : Black.<\/span>
Muzzle : Strong, of medium length; nasal bridge straight.<\/span>
Lips : Close fitting; black.<\/span>
Jaws\/Teeth : Strong, complete scissor bite (molars 3 (M3) are not<\/span>
taken into consideration). Pincer bite accepted.<\/span>
Eyes : Dark brown, almond-shaped, with close fitting eyelids.<\/span>
Neither too deep-set nor prominent. Loose eyelids are faulty. <\/span>
Ears : Medium-sized, set high, triangular in shape, slightly rounded<\/span>
at the tips, in repose hanging flat and close to the head. When alert,<\/span>
the rear part of the set-on is raised while the front edge of the ear<\/span>
remains close to the head.<\/span>
NECK<\/strong> : Strong, muscular, of medium length.<\/span>
BODY<\/strong> :<\/span>
Topline : From the neck running slightly downwards to the withers<\/span>
in a harmonious line, then running on straight and level.<\/span>
Back : Firm, straight and level.<\/span>
Loins : Broad and strong; seen from above slightly less broad than<\/span>
the chest.<\/span>
Croup : Smoothly rounded.<\/span>
Chest : Broad and deep, reaching to the elbows; forechest distinctly<\/span>
developed; ribcage of wide-oval section extending as well back as<\/span>
possible.<\/span>
Underline\/belly : Slightly rising from chest to hindquarters.<\/span><\/p>\n

TAIL<\/strong> : Bushy, reaching at least to the hocks; hanging straight down<\/span>
when at rest; carried level with back or slightly above when moving.<\/span>
LIMBS : Strong bones.<\/span>
FOREQUARTERS :<\/span>
General appearance : Forelegs seen from the front straight and<\/span>
parallel, standing rather wide apart.<\/span>
Shoulders : Shoulder blade long, strong and well laid back, forming a<\/span>
not too obtuse angle with the upper arm, well attached to the chest,<\/span>
well muscled.<\/span>
Upper arm : Long, set oblique.<\/span>
Elbows : Close fitting; neither turned in nor out.<\/span>
Forearm : Strong, straight.<\/span>
Pastern : Seen from the side almost upright, firm; seen from the front<\/span>
in straight line with the forearm.<\/span>
Forefeet : Short, roundish; with well-knit, well-arched toes. Turned<\/span>
neither in nor out. <\/span>
HINDQUARTERS :<\/span>
General appearance : Seen from the rear straight and parallel, not too<\/span>
close.<\/span>
Upper thigh : Long, broad, strong and well muscled.<\/span>
Stifle : Distinctly well bent.<\/span>
Lower thigh : Long and oblique.<\/span>
Hock joint : Strong, well angulated.<\/span>
Metatarsus : Set almost vertically. Dewclaws to be removed (except<\/span>
in those countries where it is prohibited by law).<\/span>
Hind feet : Slightly less arched than forefeet, turned neither in nor<\/span>
out.<\/span>
GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong> : Sound and balanced movement in all gaits<\/span>
covering a lot of ground; free stride reaching well out in front, with<\/span>
good drive from behind; at the trot, coming and going, legs moving<\/span>
forward in a straight line.<\/span>
COAT<\/span><\/strong>
HAIR : Long, shining, straight or slightly wavy.<\/span>
COLOUR : Jet black main colour with rich tan markings on the<\/span>
cheeks, above the eyes, on all four legs and on the chest, and with<\/span>
white markings as follows :<\/span>
\u2022 Clean white symmetrical markings on the head : blaze<\/span>
extending towards the nose on both sides to a muzzle band;<\/span>
the blaze should not reach the tan markings above the eyes,<\/span>
and the white muzzle band should not extend beyond the<\/span>
corners of the mouth.<\/span>
\u2022 Moderately broad, unbroken white marking on throat and<\/span>
chest.<\/span>
\u2022 Desirable : white feet,<\/span>
white tip of tail.<\/span>
\u2022 Tolerated : small white patch on nape of neck,<\/span>
small white anal patch. <\/span>
SIZE<\/strong> :<\/span>
Height at withers : for dogs : 64-70 cm,<\/span>
ideal size : 66-68 cm.<\/span>
for bitches : 58-66 cm,<\/span>
ideal size : 60-63 cm.<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong> : Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
\u2022 Unsure behaviour.<\/span>
\u2022 Fine bones.<\/span>
\u2022 Irregular set of the incisors provided that the bite remains<\/span>
correct.<\/span>
\u2022 Absence of any other theeth than 2 PM1 (premolars 1); the<\/span>
M3 (molars 3) are not taken into consideration.<\/span>
\u2022 Coat :<\/span>
– Distinctly curly coat.<\/span>
– Faults of colour and markings :<\/span>
– Absence of white on head.<\/span>
– Blaze too large and\/or muzzle band<\/span>
reaching noticeably beyond the<\/span>
corners of the mouth.<\/span>
– White collar.<\/span>
– Large white patch on nape of neck<\/span>
(maximum diameter more than 6<\/span>
cm).<\/span>
– White anal patch (maximum size 6<\/span>
cm).<\/span>
– White markings on forelegs<\/span>
reaching distinctly beyond half-way<\/span>
of pasterns (\u201cboots\u201d).<\/span>
– Disturbingly asymmetrical white<\/span>
markings on head and\/or chest.<\/span>
– Black ticks and stripes within the<\/span>
white on the chest. <\/span>
– \u201cDirty\u201d white (strong spots of<\/span>
pigmentation).<\/span>
– Black coat with a touch of brown or<\/span>
red.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span>
\u2022 Aggressive, anxious or distinctly shy.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural<\/span>
abnormalities shall be disqualified.<\/span>
\u2022 Split nose.<\/span>
\u2022 Undershot or overshot mouth, wry mouth.<\/span>
\u2022 One or two blue eyes (wall eye).<\/span>
\u2022 Entropion, ectropion.<\/span>
\u2022 Kinky tail, ring tail.<\/span>
\u2022 Short coat, double coat (Stockhaar).<\/span>
\u2022 Other than tricoloured coat.<\/span>
\u2022 Other main colour than black.<\/span>
N.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles<\/span>
fully descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed<\/span>
typical conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
