Originally he was named \u201cD\u00fcrrb\u00e4chler\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">according to the name of the hamlet and of the inn of D\u00fcrrbach, near<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Riggisberg in the Canton Bern where these long-haired tricoloured<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">farm dogs were especially numerous. In 1902, 1904 and 1907<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">specimen of this breed had already been exhibited at dog shows, and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in 1907 some breeders of the region of Burgdorf decided to promote<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the pure breeding of these dogs by founding the \u201cSchweizerischer<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">D\u00fcrrbach-Klub\u201d, and fixing the characteristic traits of the breed. In<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1910, at a show in Burgdorf where many farmers of that region<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brought their D\u00fcrrb\u00e4chler dogs to, already 107 specimen were<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shown.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From that day onward this dog, renamed \u201cBernese Mountain Dog\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">following the example of the other breeds of Swiss Mountain Dogs, <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">became rapidly appreciated all over Switzerland and in the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">neighbouring parts of Germany. Today the Bernese Mountain Dog<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is well known and appreciated all over the world as a family dog<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">thanks to its striking tricoloured coat and its great adaptability.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : Longhaired, tricoloured, strong and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">agile working dog, of above medium size, with sturdily built limbs;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">harmonious and well balanced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Height at withers : length of body (measured from the point<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the shoulder to the point of the buttock) = 9 : 10, rather<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">compact than elongated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Ideal relation of height at withers : depth of chest = 2 : 1.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : Self-confident, attentive,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">vigilant, fearless in every day situations; good-natured and devoted<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to his own people, self-assured and placid towards strangers ; of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">medium temperament, docile.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong> : Strong. In size balanced to general appearance, not too<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">massive.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull : Viewed from the front and in profile little rounded. Frontal<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">furrow hardly marked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop : Well defined, but without being too pronounced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose : Black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle : Strong, of medium length; nasal bridge straight.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips : Close fitting; black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth : Strong, complete scissor bite (molars 3 (M3) are not<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">taken into consideration). Pincer bite accepted.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes : Dark brown, almond-shaped, with close fitting eyelids.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Neither too deep-set nor prominent. Loose eyelids are faulty. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears : Medium-sized, set high, triangular in shape, slightly rounded<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">at the tips, in repose hanging flat and close to the head. When alert,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the rear part of the set-on is raised while the front edge of the ear<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">remains close to the head.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong> : Strong, muscular, of medium length.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Topline : From the neck running slightly downwards to the withers<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in a harmonious line, then running on straight and level.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back : Firm, straight and level.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loins : Broad and strong; seen from above slightly less broad than<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the chest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup : Smoothly rounded.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest : Broad and deep, reaching to the elbows; forechest distinctly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">developed; ribcage of wide-oval section extending as well back as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">possible.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline\/belly : Slightly rising from chest to hindquarters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong> : Bushy, reaching at least to the hocks; hanging straight down<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">when at rest; carried level with back or slightly above when moving.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS : Strong bones.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance : Forelegs seen from the front straight and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">parallel, standing rather wide apart.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulders : Shoulder blade long, strong and well laid back, forming a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">not too obtuse angle with the upper arm, well attached to the chest,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">well muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm : Long, set oblique.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbows : Close fitting; neither turned in nor out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm : Strong, straight.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pastern : Seen from the side almost upright, firm; seen from the front<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in straight line with the forearm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet : Short, roundish; with well-knit, well-arched toes. Turned<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">neither in nor out. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance : Seen from the rear straight and parallel, not too<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">close.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper thigh : Long, broad, strong and well muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle : Distinctly well bent.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh : Long and oblique.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock joint : Strong, well angulated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus : Set almost vertically. Dewclaws to be removed (except<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in those countries where it is prohibited by law).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet : Slightly less arched than forefeet, turned neither in nor<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong> : Sound and balanced movement in all gaits<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">covering a lot of ground; free stride reaching well out in front, with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">good drive from behind; at the trot, coming and going, legs moving<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">forward in a straight line.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HAIR : Long, shining, straight or slightly wavy.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COLOUR : Jet black main colour with rich tan markings on the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">cheeks, above the eyes, on all four legs and on the chest, and with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">white markings as follows :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Clean white symmetrical markings on the head : blaze<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">extending towards the nose on both sides to a muzzle band;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the blaze should not reach the tan markings above the eyes,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the white muzzle band should not extend beyond the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">corners of the mouth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Moderately broad, unbroken white marking on throat and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">chest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Desirable : white feet,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">white tip of tail.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tolerated : small white patch on nape of neck,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">small white anal patch. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SIZE<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at withers : for dogs : 64-70 cm,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ideal size : 66-68 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">for bitches : 58-66 cm,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ideal size : 60-63 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong> : Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Unsure behaviour.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Fine bones.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Irregular set of the incisors provided that the bite remains<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">correct.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Absence of any other theeth than 2 PM1 (premolars 1); the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">M3 (molars 3) are not taken into consideration.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Coat :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Distinctly curly coat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Faults of colour and markings :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Absence of white on head.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Blaze too large and\/or muzzle band<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">reaching noticeably beyond the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">corners of the mouth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;
