The term Dogge was at first<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">understood to mean a large, powerful dog, not of any particular<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">breed. Later, particular names such as Ulmer Dogge, English Dogge,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Great Dane, Hatzr\u00fcde (Hunting Dog), Saupacker (boarfinder) and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Grosse Dogge (Great Dogge), classified these dogs according to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">colour and size.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the year 1878 a Committee of seven was formed in Berlin,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">consisting of active breeders and judges with Dr. Bodinus in the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">chair, which made the decision to classify all the forenamed varieties<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">as \u201cDeutsche Doggen\u201d (Great Danes). Thus the foundation was laid<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">for the breeding of a separate German breed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the year 1880, on the occasion of a show in Berlin, the first<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">standard for the Deutsche Dogge was laid down. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This standard has been taken care of since the year 1888 by<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the \u201cDeutsche Doggen Club 1888 e.V.\u201d (German Doggen Club,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">registered Club 1888) and frequently been revised over the years.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The present Standard meets the requirements of the F.C.I.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: The Great Dane in his noble<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">appearance combines a large, powerful well constructed body with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pride, strength and elegance. By substance together with nobility,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">harmonious appearance, well proportioned outlines, as well as an<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">especially expressive head, the Great Dane strikes the onlooker as a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">noble statue, never coarse or with refined elegance. Perfect in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">balance and always with clearly defined sexual dimorphism. He is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the Apollo amongst all breeds.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: Almost square in build, this<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">applies particularly to males. Females can be a little longer in body.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Friendly, loving and devoted to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">his owners. Might be reserved towards strangers, but required is a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">confident, fearless, easily tractable, docile companion and family dog<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with high resistance to provocation and without aggression.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong>: In harmony with the general appearance. Long, narrow,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">distinct and expressive. Never wedge shaped. Finely chiselled,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">especially under the eyes. The distance from tip of nose to stop and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from stop to the slightly defined occipital bone should be as equal as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">possible. The upper lines of muzzle and skull should definitely run<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">parallel. The head must appear narrow seen from the front with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bridge of nose as broad as possible.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: Superciliary ridges well developed but not protruding.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Clearly defined. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: Well developed, more broad than round with large nostrils.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Must be black with the exception of harlequins (white with black<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">patches). In these a black nose is desired but a butterfly nose (black<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with pink patches) or flesh coloured nose is tolerated. In blue dogs<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the colour of the nose is anthracite (diluted black).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: Deep and as rectangular as possible. Bridge of nose must<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">never be concave (dish shaped), convex (roman nose) or falling away<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in front part (eagle nose).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: Well defined corners of lips. Lips neither lacking flews nor<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">being too pendulous or rolled in. Dark pigmented lips. In harlequins<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">not totally pigmented or flesh coloured lips are tolerated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth: Well developed broad jaws. Strong sound and complete<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">scissor bite (42 teeth according to the dentition formula). Any<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">deviation from a complete scissors bite (except for PM1s in lower<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">jaw) is highly undesirable.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheeks: Cheek muscles only slightly defined and in no way<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">protruding.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes: Of medium size with lively friendly intelligent expression.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Almond shaped with close fitting lids. Eyes not set too wide apart or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slit eyes. As dark as possible, light piercing or amber coloured eyes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">are undesirable. Although in blue dogs slightly lighter eyes are<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tolerated. In harlequins pale (ice blue) eyes or two differently<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">coloured eyes are to be tolerated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears: Naturally pendant set on high, but not lifted above skull or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hanging low. Medium sized. Front edges lying close to cheeks but<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">neither hanging flat nor standing off from sides of head.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: Long, clean, muscular and never short or thick. Well formed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">set on, tapering slightly towards the head, with arched neckline.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carried upright but inclined slightly forward, but no ewe neck.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Throatiness or dewlap is highly undesirable.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers: The highest point of the strong body. It is formed by the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">points of the shoulder blades which extend beyond the spinal<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">processes. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back: Short and firm, in almost straight line falling away<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">imperceptibly to the rear. Back never to be long or with top line<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rising towards the rear.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loin: Slightly arched, broad, strongly muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: Broad, well muscled. Sloping slightly from hipbone to tail<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">set, imperceptibly merging into the tail set. Croup must never fall<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">away steeply or be completely flat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest: Reaching to the elbows. Well sprung ribs, reaching far back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ribs must never be barrel shaped or flat. Chest of good width and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">depth and must never look flat sided or shallow. Well marked forechest, although breastbone must not be too strongly pronounced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline and belly: Belly well tucked up towards rear, forming a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nicely curved line with the underside of the brisket. It is not desirable<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">that females retain a slack belly line after maternal duties.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong>: Reaching to the hocks, must not be too long or too short. Set<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">on high and broad, neither too high nor too low. Not too thick,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tapering evenly towards tip. In repose tail is hanging down with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">natural curve. When the dog is alert or moving the tail is carried<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly sabre-like but not markedly above the backline, must never<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">be carried above the back line. Hook tail or curled tail as well as a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tail carried sideways are highly undesirable. Bristle hair on tail<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">undesirable.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: Must be sufficiently angulated and with strong<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bone and muscles.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulder: Strongly muscled. The long, slanting shoulder blade forms<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">an angle of 100 to 110 degrees with the upper arm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm: Strong and muscular, close fitting should be slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">longer than the shoulder blade.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbow: Turned neither in nor out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm: Strong, muscular. Seen from front and side, completely<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">straight with vertical stance. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carpus (Wrist): Strong, firm, only slightly standing out from the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">structure of the forearm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metacarpus (Pastern): Strong, straight when seen from the front, seen<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from the side, barely slanting forwards.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet: Rounded, well arched, well-knit toes (cat feet). Nails short,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strong and as dark as possible.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: The whole skeleton is covered by strong<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">muscles which make the croup, hips and upper thighs appear broad<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and rounded. The strong well angulated hind legs, viewed from<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">behind, are parallel to the front legs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh: Long, broad, very muscular.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle (Knee): Strong, positioned almost vertically under the hip<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">joint.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh: Long, of approximately the same length as the upper<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">thigh. Well muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock joint: Strong, firm, turning neither in nor out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Short, strong, standing almost vertical to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the ground.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet: Rounded, well arched, well-knit (cat feet). Nails short,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strong and as dark as possible.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Harmonious, lithe, covering a lot of ground,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly springy. Never with a short stride or pacing. Legs must be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">parallel in movement, both coming and going and always well coordinated between front and rear.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong>: Tight fitting. In solid colours, well pigmented. In harlequins,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the distribution of pigment mainly corresponds to the markings.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>COAT<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: Very short, dense, smooth and close lying, glossy. Must never<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">be coarse, dull or a double coat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour: The Great Dane is bred in three separate colour varieties:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fawn and brindle, harlequin and black, and blue. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fawn: Light gold fawn to deep gold fawn. Black mask desired.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Never to be grey fawn, blue fawn or a sooty fawn colour No white<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">markings.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Brindle: Basic colour, light to deep gold fawn with black stripes as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regular and clearly defined as possible, running with the direction of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the ribs. Black mask desired. Never with washed-out streaks. No<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">white markings.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Harlequin (white with black splashed patches): Basic colour pure<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">white, preferably with no ticking. Pure black patches well distributed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">all over the body, having the appearance of being torn. Grey or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brownish patches or nuances of those colours in the black are<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">undesirable as well as blue-grey ticking in the white. So called<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cGrautiger\u201d occur, they are neither desirable nor to be disqualified.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Black: Jet black, white markings on chest and feet permitted.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Included here are \u201cManteltiger\u201d in which the black covers the body<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">like a coat (\u201cmantel\u201d) or blanket and muzzle, throat, chest, belly, legs<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and tip of tail may be white. Also dogs with basic white colour and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">large black patches so called \u201cPlattenhunde\u201d. The black colour must<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">never have nuances of fawn or brown or bluish black colour.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Blue: Pure steel blue, white markings on chest and feet permitted.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Never with a fawn nuance or blackish blue colour.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SIZE AND WEIGHT:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Males: at least 80 cms, should not exceed 90 cms.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: at least 72 cms, should not exceed 84 cms.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Insufficient stop.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Rolled in lip (the lower lip is pinched between the incisives of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">upper and lower jaw).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Irregular position of individual incisors as long as the bite<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">remains correct, teeth too small. Partial pincer bite.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Eyes protruding or too deeply set. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Shoulders that are loose or loaded or with upright shoulder<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">blades.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Elbows lose.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Carpus bent, enlarged, or knuckling over.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Pasterns which are markedly weak, too sloping or too upright.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Hindquarters with too much or too little angulations.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Hock joints that are open, enlarged or unstable.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Cow hocked as well as rear pasterns too close together.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dewclaws.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Feet splayed or long.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SEVERE FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Lacking self-confidence, shy, nervous.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Apple head and too prominent cheek muscles.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Slack eye lids and showing red haw.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Sway back or roach back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Croup sloping too much.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Constant pacing.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tail which is damaged thickened at the tip or which has been<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">docked.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shall be disqualified.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Fear-biting, easily provoked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Liver coloured or split nose.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Bite that is overshot, undershot or a wry mouth, pincer bite,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">missing teeth apart from two P1 in the lower jaw.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Ectropion, entropion or macroblepharia.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Wall eyes or differently coloured eyes in all solid colours, except<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in harlequins.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tail with kink (i.e. deformed vertebrae).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Silver blue or isabella colour in fawns and brindles.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Fawn, brindle or blue dogs with white as blaze, collar, socks or on<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tip of tail. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Miscoloured harlequins: brindle or blue patches (\u2018porcelain<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tiger\u2019), white with fawn.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Albino, i.e. no pigmentation.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Deafness.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Below minimum height.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">N.B.:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">descended into the scrotum.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wpview-selection-after\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;
