A good<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">watch dog and loyal companion.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>CLASSIFICATION F.C.I.<\/strong> : Group 3 Terriers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Section 1 Large and medium sized<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Terriers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Without working trial.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong> : Like the other Irish Terrier<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">breeds it is assumed that the Kerry Blue has been in the country for<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">centuries, but, once again, because of its humble origins as a rat<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">catcher and all-round farm dog, there are few, if any references to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">breed before the 20th century. The first probable literary references<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to the Kerry Blue dates from 1847 the author describes a bluish slate<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">coloured dog, marked with darker blotches and patches, and often<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with the tan about the legs and muzzle. This blackish-blue Irish<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">terrier was supposed to be prevalent in Kerry but it has been<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">developed in other counties as well. The blue didn\u2019t make its first<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">appearance on the show benches until 1913, and the Dublin Blue<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Terrier Club was formed in 1920. The Kerry Blue became quickly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">so popular as a sort of mascot for Irish patriots that there were<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">actually four clubs promoting its interests for a short time, and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">between 1922 and 1924 these clubs sponsored no fewer than six<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shows and six field trials. By 1928 this impressive balanced terrier<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with its beautiful soft blue coat became popular worldwide and its<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">reputation as an excellent working and companion dog agreed with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the breed assessment as \u00ab well nigh perfect \u00bb. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : The typical Kerry Blue Terrier<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should be upstanding, well-knit and well proportionated, showing<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">well developed muscular body with definite terrier style.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : Terrier character throughout.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The all-important factor-expression must be keen and alert.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong> : Showing plenty of hair. Dogs should be stronger in head<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and more muscular than bitches.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull : Strong and well balanced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop : Slight.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose : Black, nostrils large and wide.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle : The foreface should be of medium length.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Teeth : Teeth large even and white, scissor bite (level bite<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">acceptable).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws : Jaws strong and muscular (punishing jaws).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mouth : Gums and roof dark.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes : Dark or dark hazel, medium in size and well placed, keen in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">expression.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears : Thin and not large, carried in front or close to the sides of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">head, in a forward position, again to express the keen, sharp terrier<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">expression.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong> : Well proportioned, well set on shoulders and moderately<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">long.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back : Medium length, level.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loin : Moderate in length.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest : Deep and of moderate width. Ribs well sprung.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong> : Thin, well placed and carried erect and gaily. <\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulders : Fine, sloping, well-knit.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forelegs : Straight in front, bone good.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS : Hindlegs well set under dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thighs : Muscular, well developed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hocks : Strong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FEET : Compact, pads strong and rounded, toe nails black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong> : Good coordination, with legs parallel,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">forelegs reaching out and powerful drive in the hindquarters.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the dog is moving the topline should remain level and the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">head and tail should be carried high.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HAIR : Soft, plentiful and wavy.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COLOUR : Blue of any shade with or without black points. Black is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">permissible only up to the age of 18 months, as is also a shade of tan.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SIZE AND WEIGHT<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dogs : 18 &#8211; 19,5 inches (45,5 to 49,5 cm).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bitches: 17,5 &#8211; 19 inches (44,5 to 48 cm).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dogs : 33 lbs to 40 lbs (15 to 18 kg).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bitches : proportionately less.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong> : Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">upon the health and welfare of the dog. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Flesh coloured gums.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Yellow or light coloured eyes.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Roach back or hollow back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Narrow chest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Protruding elbows.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Teeth undershot or overshot.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 White or bone coloured toe nails.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Dewclaws on hind legs, or marks of their removal.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Close, cow-hocked or stilted hind action.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Dogs whose heads or tails are held up by exhibitors or handlers<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should be penalised.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Hard, wire or bristle coat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any colour other than blue with the exception stated above<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong> :<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shall be disqualified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">N.B:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">descended into the scrotum.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">conformation, should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wpview-selection-after\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;
