ORIGIN<\/strong>: Northern borders of Mali and Niger; the slopes of the<\/span>
Azawakh valley.<\/span>
PATRONAGE<\/strong>: France.<\/span>

STANDARD<\/strong>: 04\/09\/2019.<\/span>
UTILIZATION<\/strong>: Sighthound that hunts for game (gazelles, hares,<\/span>
ostriches) and fights off predators (hyenas, jackals, lions). This dog is<\/span>
an important companion for the family life of the nomads and shares<\/span>
their camp life.<\/span>

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong>: It is an African sighthound<\/span>
descending from the types pictured in the wall paintings of the<\/span>
Central Sahara which date back thousands of years. The everincreasing aridity of the Sahara caused Tuareg, Dahoussahaq and<\/span>
Peul shepherd-hunters to migrate with their dogs to the more<\/span>
hospitable lands of the Sahel: in areas suitable for farming and<\/span>
hunting along the dry valley of the Azawakh. Belonging to the<\/span>
culture of peoples who domesticated and shaped it, it is known as<\/span>
Oska in the Tuareg language. European enthousiasts discovered the<\/span>
breed with admiration and selected with the help of the breeders who<\/span>
owned the first lines exported to Europe, as of 1968.<\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: Particularly slim and elegant, the<\/span>
Azawakh sighthound gives a general impression of great slenderness.<\/span>
Its bone structure and muscles show through thin and dry skin. It is a<\/span>
slender dog whose body fits into a rectangle with a vertical long side. <\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>:<\/span>
Height at the withers \/ Scapulo-ischial length: 10-9 (a ratio slightly<\/span>
lower in females is allowed)-<\/span>
Height at the withers \/ Depth of chest: 10-4.<\/span>
Length of head \/ Length of muzzle: 10-5.<\/span>
Head length \/ Width of skull: 10-4.<\/span>
BEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Quick, attentive, distant, can be<\/span>
very reserved with strangers, but it can be gentle and affectionate<\/span>
with its family, and people whom it is willing to accept.<\/span>
HEAD<\/strong>: Long, fine, lean and chiselled, rather narrow, without excess.<\/span>
CRANIAL REGION:<\/span>
Skull: Almost flat, rather long, its width should be significantly less<\/span>
than half the length of the head. The line of skull and the bridge of<\/span>
the muzzle are sometimes slightly divergent. The superciliary ridges<\/span>
and the frontal furrow are slightly marked. The external occipital<\/span>
protuberance is clearly pronounced.<\/span>
Stop: Very slightly marked.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION:<\/span>
Nose: Black or dark brown colour is obligatory; the nostrils are well<\/span>
opened.<\/span>
Muzzle: Long, straight, tapered without exaggeration towards the<\/span>
end.<\/span>
Lips: Thin lips tightly fitting, colour is black or dark brown, no<\/span>
hanging lips.<\/span>
Jaws\/Teeth: Jaws are long and strong; scissor bite. Complete set of<\/span>
teeth.<\/span>
Cheeks: Flat.<\/span>
EYES<\/strong>: Almond eyes, rather large, slightly oblique palpebral opening,<\/span>
colour is dark, sometimes amber, never blue. Eye rims well black or<\/span>
dark brown pigmented.<\/span>
EARS<\/strong>: Set quite high. They are fine, always drooping and flat, broad<\/span>
based, lie flat against the cheeks, never “rose ear”. <\/span>
The shape is that of a triangle with a rounded tip. The base of the ears<\/span>
pricks up when the sighthound is attentive.<\/span>
NECK<\/strong>: Neck springing clearly from the shoulders, long, fine and<\/span>
muscular, with upper end slightly arched. The skin is fine and does<\/span>
not form a dewlap.<\/span>
BODY<\/strong>:<\/span>
Top line: Straight, approximately horizontal or slightly rising from<\/span>
the withers towards the point of the hips. Hips clearly protruding and<\/span>
placed at the same height or higher than the height of the withers.<\/span>
Withers: Distinctively prominent.<\/span>
Loin: Short and dry.<\/span>
Croup: Oblique (ideally 45 \u00b0).<\/span>
Chest: Deep, well-let down almost to the elbows, sternal region<\/span>
gently narrowing. Fore chest fairly narrow. Ribs long, slightly<\/span>
visible, gently and evenly sprung.<\/span>
Underline and belly: The sternal arch is pronounced. The underline<\/span>
rises smoothly into the belly which is tucked up very high.<\/span><\/p>\n

TAIL<\/strong>:<\/span>
Set low, long, thin, lean and tapered. Covered with the same type of<\/span>
hair as the body, it often has a white pencil hair on the end. The tail<\/span>
hangs with the tip slightly raised, but it can rise above the horizontal<\/span>
when the dog is excited.<\/span>
LIMBS<\/strong>:<\/span>
FOREQUARTERS:<\/span>
General appearance: Long, thin, vertical. Perfect stand.<\/span>
Shoulder: Long shoulder blade, with dry muscles and only slightly<\/span>
oblique viewed in profile.<\/span>
Upper arm: The scapulo-humeral angle is very open (about 130\u00b0).<\/span>
Metacarpus (Pastern): Slightly oblique.<\/span>
Forefeet: Rounded, with slender digits, tight and well arched. The<\/span>
pads are pigmented. <\/span>
HINDQUARTERS:<\/span>
General appearance: Long and lean legs, viewed from behind,<\/span>
perfectly parallel.<\/span>
Thigh: Long with dry protruding muscles. Coxo-femoral angle is<\/span>
very open (about 130\u00b0).<\/span>
Stifle (Knee): Femoro-tibial angle is very open (about 145\u00b0).<\/span>
Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Tarsus and metatarsus lean, without<\/span>
dewclaws.<\/span>
Hind feet: Rounded, toes well arched, pads pigmented.<\/span><\/p>\n

GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Always very supple and with high action<\/span>
when walking and trotting. The gallop is springy. The Azawakh<\/span>
sighthound gives an impression of lightness, even elasticity. The<\/span>
movement is an essential characteristic of the breed.<\/span>
SKIN<\/strong>: Thin and tight-fitting.<\/span>
COAT<\/strong>:<\/span>
Hair: Short, fine, and down to none on the belly.<\/span>
Colour: Fawn, with or without brindles, with white patching limited<\/span>
to the extremities. All shades are admitted, clear sand to dark fawn<\/span>
(mahogany). Brindles should be black as excluding any other shade.<\/span>
The muzzle can present a black mask.<\/span>
White patching: The blaze is very inconstant. On the fore chest, white<\/span>
may be present as white patches, more or less extensively, confined<\/span>
to the base of the neck. Yet, a narrow white stripe is permitted on<\/span>
the forepart of the neck, on the forechest and on the lower part of<\/span>
the chest. The bib should not extend past the point of the shoulder or<\/span>
go up on each side of the neck. A small white spot on the nape of the<\/span>
neck, of reduced size, is tolerated. As a continuation of the fore chest,<\/span>
white spots can appear below the chest, but must not in any case go<\/span>
up the ribs.<\/span>
Each of the four limbs has a white stocking, at least as a trace on the<\/span>
feet.<\/span>
On a subject having excellent morphology, the lack of white on one<\/span>
limb is allowed. The white marks on the forequarters, often irregular,<\/span>
should not extend beyond the elbows, or encroach on the shoulders. <\/span>
The white marks on the hindquarters, often more regular and less<\/span>
invasive, should not go up to the thigh. White marks appearing on the<\/span>
inner side of the thigh, however, should not be considered a fault.<\/span>
SIZE AND WEIGHT<\/strong>:<\/span>
Height at the withers: Males: 64 \u201374 cm.<\/span>
Females: 60\u201370 cm.<\/span>
A margin of 2 cm above and below the standard is tolerated.<\/span>
Weight: Males: 20\u201325 kg.<\/span>
Females: 15\u201320 kg.<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
SEVERE FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Head heavy lacking elegance.<\/span>
\u2022 Tail thick and hairy, very curled tail.<\/span>
\u2022 Body too long.<\/span>
\u2022 Level bite.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities.<\/span>
Lack of type.<\/span>
\u2022 Overly small chest and extreme general thinness.<\/span>
\u2022 Underbite or overbite.<\/span>
\u2022 Nose, eyelids and lips other than black or dark brown.<\/span>
\u2022 Light eyes or blue eyes.<\/span>
\u2022 Rose ears.<\/span>
\u2022 Hips lower than the withers.<\/span>
\u2022 Non-accidental anatomical deformation (e.g.: asymmetrical<\/span>
junction of the ribs at the sternum).<\/span>
\u2022 Presence of dewclaws or traces of removal of dewclaws on<\/span>
hind legs. <\/span>
\u2022 Wired or semi-long coat.<\/span>
\u2022 Non-standard coat colours (invasive white, white collar,<\/span>
brindle other than black). Beware of diluted colours such as<\/span>
: blue, lilac.<\/span>
\u2022 Every dog which shows traces of a surgical intervention<\/span>
meant to correct or repair an esthetical or morphological<\/span>
fault will be excluded.<\/span>
\u2022 Size deviating more than 3 cm. from the standard.<\/span>
N.B.<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span>
conformation, should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
