This dog is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">an important companion for the family life of the nomads and shares<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">their camp life.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FCI-CLASSIFICATION:<\/strong> Group 10 Sighthounds.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Section 3 Short-haired Sighthounds.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Without working trial.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong>: It is an African sighthound<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">descending from the types pictured in the wall paintings of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Central Sahara which date back thousands of years. The everincreasing aridity of the Sahara caused Tuareg, Dahoussahaq and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Peul shepherd-hunters to migrate with their dogs to the more<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hospitable lands of the Sahel: in areas suitable for farming and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hunting along the dry valley of the Azawakh. Belonging to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">culture of peoples who domesticated and shaped it, it is known as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Oska in the Tuareg language. European enthousiasts discovered the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">breed with admiration and selected with the help of the breeders who<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">owned the first lines exported to Europe, as of 1968.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: Particularly slim and elegant, the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Azawakh sighthound gives a general impression of great slenderness.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Its bone structure and muscles show through thin and dry skin. It is a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slender dog whose body fits into a rectangle with a vertical long side. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers \/ Scapulo-ischial length: 10-9 (a ratio slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lower in females is allowed)-<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers \/ Depth of chest: 10-4.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Length of head \/ Length of muzzle: 10-5.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Head length \/ Width of skull: 10-4.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Quick, attentive, distant, can be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">very reserved with strangers, but it can be gentle and affectionate<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with its family, and people whom it is willing to accept.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong>: Long, fine, lean and chiselled, rather narrow, without excess.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: Almost flat, rather long, its width should be significantly less<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">than half the length of the head. The line of skull and the bridge of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the muzzle are sometimes slightly divergent. The superciliary ridges<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the frontal furrow are slightly marked. The external occipital<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">protuberance is clearly pronounced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Very slightly marked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: Black or dark brown colour is obligatory; the nostrils are well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">opened.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: Long, straight, tapered without exaggeration towards the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">end.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: Thin lips tightly fitting, colour is black or dark brown, no<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hanging lips.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth: Jaws are long and strong; scissor bite. Complete set of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">teeth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheeks: Flat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>EYES<\/strong>: Almond eyes, rather large, slightly oblique palpebral opening,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">colour is dark, sometimes amber, never blue. Eye rims well black or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dark brown pigmented.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>EARS<\/strong>: Set quite high. They are fine, always drooping and flat, broad<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">based, lie flat against the cheeks, never &#8220;rose ear&#8221;. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The shape is that of a triangle with a rounded tip. The base of the ears<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pricks up when the sighthound is attentive.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: Neck springing clearly from the shoulders, long, fine and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">muscular, with upper end slightly arched. The skin is fine and does<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">not form a dewlap.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Top line: Straight, approximately horizontal or slightly rising from<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the withers towards the point of the hips. Hips clearly protruding and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">placed at the same height or higher than the height of the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers: Distinctively prominent.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loin: Short and dry.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: Oblique (ideally 45 \u00b0).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest: Deep, well-let down almost to the elbows, sternal region<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">gently narrowing. Fore chest fairly narrow. Ribs long, slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">visible, gently and evenly sprung.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline and belly: The sternal arch is pronounced. The underline<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rises smoothly into the belly which is tucked up very high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Set low, long, thin, lean and tapered. Covered with the same type of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hair as the body, it often has a white pencil hair on the end. The tail<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hangs with the tip slightly raised, but it can rise above the horizontal<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">when the dog is excited.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>LIMBS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: Long, thin, vertical. Perfect stand.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulder: Long shoulder blade, with dry muscles and only slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">oblique viewed in profile.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm: The scapulo-humeral angle is very open (about 130\u00b0).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metacarpus (Pastern): Slightly oblique.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet: Rounded, with slender digits, tight and well arched. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pads are pigmented. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: Long and lean legs, viewed from behind,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">perfectly parallel.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh: Long with dry protruding muscles. Coxo-femoral angle is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">very open (about 130\u00b0).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle (Knee): Femoro-tibial angle is very open (about 145\u00b0).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Tarsus and metatarsus lean, without<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dewclaws.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet: Rounded, toes well arched, pads pigmented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Always very supple and with high action<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">when walking and trotting. The gallop is springy. The Azawakh<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sighthound gives an impression of lightness, even elasticity. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">movement is an essential characteristic of the breed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong>: Thin and tight-fitting.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>COAT<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: Short, fine, and down to none on the belly.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour: Fawn, with or without brindles, with white patching limited<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to the extremities. All shades are admitted, clear sand to dark fawn<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(mahogany). Brindles should be black as excluding any other shade.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The muzzle can present a black mask.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">White patching: The blaze is very inconstant. On the fore chest, white<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">may be present as white patches, more or less extensively, confined<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to the base of the neck. Yet, a narrow white stripe is permitted on<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the forepart of the neck, on the forechest and on the lower part of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the chest. The bib should not extend past the point of the shoulder or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">go up on each side of the neck. A small white spot on the nape of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">neck, of reduced size, is tolerated. As a continuation of the fore chest,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">white spots can appear below the chest, but must not in any case go<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">up the ribs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each of the four limbs has a white stocking, at least as a trace on the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">feet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On a subject having excellent morphology, the lack of white on one<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">limb is allowed. The white marks on the forequarters, often irregular,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should not extend beyond the elbows, or encroach on the shoulders. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The white marks on the hindquarters, often more regular and less<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">invasive, should not go up to the thigh. White marks appearing on the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">inner side of the thigh, however, should not be considered a fault.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SIZE AND WEIGHT<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers: Males: 64 \u201374 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: 60\u201370 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A margin of 2 cm above and below the standard is tolerated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight: Males: 20\u201325 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: 15\u201320 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SEVERE FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Head heavy lacking elegance.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tail thick and hairy, very curled tail.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Body too long.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Level bite.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lack of type.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Overly small chest and extreme general thinness.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Underbite or overbite.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Nose, eyelids and lips other than black or dark brown.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Light eyes or blue eyes.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Rose ears.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Hips lower than the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Non-accidental anatomical deformation (e.g.: asymmetrical<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">junction of the ribs at the sternum).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Presence of dewclaws or traces of removal of dewclaws on<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hind legs. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Wired or semi-long coat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Non-standard coat colours (invasive white, white collar,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brindle other than black).
