BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong>: This breed is native to the<\/span>
province of Cordoba, in the Mediterranean region of Argentina.<\/span>
Its creator was Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez, a prominent and active<\/span>
surgeon (1907 \u2013 1956).<\/span>
His work was based upon the methodical crossbreeding of the \u201cOld<\/span>
Fighting Dog of Cordoba\u201d, a breed of great power and strength,<\/span>
which was the product of crossbreeding among dog of the breeds<\/span>
Bulldogs and Bull Terriers.<\/span>
He selected completely white dogs for breeding, not undershot, with<\/span>
heavy heads and long muzzle.<\/span>
After a thorough and minute character study and selection, through<\/span>
different generations, his aim was accomplished forming different<\/span>
families always using as a start the Old Fighting Dog of Cordoba<\/span>
which was crossed at first with English Bull Dog, Great Dane,<\/span>
Pyrenean Mastiff, Bull Terrier, Boxer, Pointer, Dogue de Bordeaux<\/span>
and Irish Wolfhound.<\/span>
In 1947 the breed was already created and its genotype and<\/span>
phenotype were stabilized. The same year the breed standard was<\/span>
presented at the Hunter\u2019s Club in the City of Buenos Aires. <\/span>
Its strength, tenacity, sense of smell and bravery make it the best in<\/span>
the pack of dogs to hunt wild boars, peccaries, pumas and other<\/span>
predators of agriculture and livestock that inhabit the vast and<\/span>
diverse regions of Argentina. This is the traditional activity for which<\/span>
Antonio Nores created this breed.<\/span>
In 1964 it was recognized as a breed by the FCA (Federaci\u00f3n<\/span>
Cinologica Argentina) and the Sociedad Rural Argentina, which<\/span>
opened their studbook to initiate registry.<\/span>
Just in 1973 the breed was accepted by the FCI. This was possible<\/span>
thanks to the great passion and unique work and effort of Dr. Agust\u00edn<\/span>
Nores Mart\u00ednez, brother of the founder of the breed, who achieved<\/span>
this recognition not only because of his individual actions but also<\/span>
from the institutional action of the FCA and the Dogo Argentino<\/span>
Club \u201cDr. Antonio Nores Martinez\u201d.<\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE:<\/strong> It is an athletic dog, mesomorphic,<\/span>
normal type, of harmonious proportions. With powerful muscles and<\/span>
agile, his appearance gives the impression of power, energy and<\/span>
strength, in contrast to its expression of friendship and gentleness.<\/span>
All-white; can have a single dark spot on the skull.<\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: Mesocephalic, the muzzle should<\/span>
be the same length as the skull.<\/span>
The height at the withers should be slightly greater than the height at<\/span>
the croup.<\/span>
Depth of chest should represent at least 50% of the height at the<\/span>
withers.<\/span>
The length of the body should exceed the height at the withers by<\/span>
only 10% (maximum).<\/span>
BEHAVIOUR AND TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: It should be silent, never<\/span>
barking on the trail, with a keen nose and excellent flair, vent, agile,<\/span>
strong, robust and especially brave.<\/span>
Should never be aggressive toward humans, a feature that will be<\/span>
severely observed. It must give you love without conditions or<\/span>
reservations. <\/span>
HEAD<\/strong>: Of mesocephalic type, it looks strong and powerful.<\/span>
The cranio-facial axes are convergent.<\/span>
CRANIAL REGION:<\/span>
Skull: Compact, convex seen in profile and from the front due to the<\/span>
outline of the well developed masticatory and neck muscles.<\/span>
Occiput: Occipital protuberance not visible due to powerful muscles<\/span>
of neck which hide it completely.<\/span>
Stop: Defined but should not be deep or have sharp\/abrupt angles.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION: As long as the skull, the line joining the two<\/span>
frontal orbital muscles is equidistant from the occiput and the<\/span>
mandibular joint of the upper jaws.<\/span>
Nose: Strongly Black pigmented. Nostrils well opened.<\/span>
Muzzle: Same length as the skull, with concave top line.<\/span>
Lips: Tight, free edges, black pigmented, never pendulous.<\/span>
Jaws\/Teeth: Jaws correctly positioned, well-developed and strong,<\/span>
With no under or overshot, with healthy teeth, large and with normal<\/span>
implant. Full dentition is recommended. Scissor bite, pincer bite is<\/span>
accepted.<\/span>
Cheeks: Large, marked, covered by strong skin, without folds. Welldeveloped masseter muscles.<\/span>
Eyes: Medium size, almond shaped, dark or hazel coloured, lids<\/span>
preferably with black pigmentation. Sub-frontal position, wide apart,<\/span>
lively and intelligent expression but at the same time remarkably<\/span>
firm.<\/span>
Ears: Set high, lateral, well apart due to the width of the skull.<\/span>
Functionally, they should be cropped and erect, in triangular shape<\/span>
and with a length that should not exceed 50% of the front edge of the<\/span>
auricle of the natural ear. Without being cropped, they are of<\/span>
medium length, broad, thick, flat and rounded at the tip.<\/span>
Covered with smooth hair which is slightly shorter than on the rest of<\/span>
the body; they can have small spots, not to be penalized.<\/span>
In natural position they hang down covering the back of the cheeks.<\/span>
When the dog is alert they may be carried semi-erect. <\/span>
NECK<\/strong>: Thick, arched, the skin of the throat is very thick forming<\/span>
smooth folds without forming dewlap. The elasticity of the skin is<\/span>
due to the cellular tissue being very lax.<\/span>
BODY<\/strong>: Rectangular. The length of the body (measured from the<\/span>
point of shoulder to point of buttock) may exceed the height at the<\/span>
withers by only 10%.<\/span>
Top line: Higher at the withers, sloping gently to the croup. The<\/span>
adults have a median furrow along the spine caused by the<\/span>
prominence of the spinal muscles. See from the side should not have<\/span>
any depression.<\/span>
Withers: Strong, well defined and high.<\/span>
Back: Very strong, with muscles well defined.<\/span>
Loins: Short, broad, very muscular.<\/span>
Croup: Broad and strong. Moderately inclined.<\/span>
Chest: Broad and deep. Seen from the front and profile, the sternum<\/span>
must reach down to the level of the elbows, thereby giving maximum<\/span>
breathing capacity. The thorax is long with ribs moderately curved.<\/span>
Underline and Belly: Rising slightly on the bottom line of the chest,<\/span>
never tucked up, strong and with good muscle tension.<\/span>
TAIL<\/strong>: Long, not to exceed the hock joint, thick medium set. At rest<\/span>
it hangs down naturally, in action it is raised in an arc with an ample<\/span>
curve.<\/span>
LIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
FOREQUARTERS:<\/span>
General appearance: Legs straight, vertical, with short and tight toes.<\/span>
Shoulders: Laid back, with great muscular development without<\/span>
exaggerations.<\/span>
Upper arm: Same length as the shoulder; well inclined.<\/span>
Elbows: Sturdy, covered with a thicker and more elastic skin,<\/span>
without folds or wrinkles. Naturally placed against the chest wall.<\/span>
Forearm: As long as the upper arm, perpendicular to the ground,<\/span>
straight with strong bone and muscles. <\/span>
Pastern joint: Broad and in line with the forearm, without bony<\/span>
prominences or skin folds.<\/span>
Pastern: Rather flat, well boned; seen from the side slightly inclined,<\/span>
without exaggeration.<\/span>
Front feet: With short and tight-fitting toes. With strong thick and<\/span>
resistant pads, preferably black pigmented.<\/span>
HINDQUARTERS:<\/span>
General appearance: Well muscled, with short pasterns and tightfitting toes, without dewclaws. Moderate angulation.<\/span>
Upper thigh: Well proportioned, with visible and well developed<\/span>
muscles.<\/span>
Stifles: Well angulated.<\/span>
Lower thigh: Slightly shorter than upper thigh, strong and muscular.<\/span>
Hock joint \/ Hock: The tarsus-metatarsus section is short, strong and<\/span>
firm, ensuring powerful propulsion of the hind limb. Tarsus is<\/span>
robust, with the point of the hock very prominent. Hocks are strong,<\/span>
almost cylindrical and vertical, without dewclaws.<\/span>
Hind feet: Similar to forefeet, although somewhat smaller and<\/span>
slightly longer, maintaining the same characteristics.<\/span>
GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Agile and firm; with noticeable<\/span>
modification when showing interest in something, changing into an<\/span>
alert attitude and responding with quick reflexes, typical for this<\/span>
breed. Calm when walking; trot is extended, with good front<\/span>
suspension and powerful rear propulsion. At gallop, the dog shows<\/span>
all of its energy, fully displaying its power. The movement is agile<\/span>
and firm when walking, trotting or galloping. Should be harmonious<\/span>
and balanced showing a solid body construction. Ambling (pacing) is<\/span>
not accepted and is considered a serious fault.<\/span>
SKIN<\/strong>: Homogeneous, thick but elastic. The semi-loose<\/span>
subcutaneous tissue is elastic, without wrinkling, except on the<\/span>
throat, where the subcutaneous tissue is more lax. Lips and eyelids<\/span>
pigmented in black are preferred. Black pigmented skin is not<\/span>
penalized. <\/span>
COAT<\/span><\/strong>
Hair: Uniform, short, smooth, with an average length of 1.5 to 2 cm.<\/span>
Density and thickness vary according to climate.<\/span>
Colour: Entirely white. Only one black or dark-coloured patch on the<\/span>
skull, but which can also be located on one ear or around one eye.<\/span>
The size of the spot must be in proportion to the size of the head, not<\/span>
exceeding 10% of the latter. Comparing two dogs of equal quality,<\/span>
the whiter should be preferred.<\/span>
SIZE AND WEIGHT<\/strong>:<\/span>
Height at the withers: Dogs: 60 to 68 cm.<\/span>
Bitches: 60 to 65 cm.<\/span>
Ideal height: Dogs: 64 to 65 cm.<\/span>
Bitches: 62 to 64 cm.<\/span>
Weight: Approximately: Males: 40 to 45 kg.<\/span>
Bitches: 40 to 43 kg.<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
upon the health and welfare of the dog and its ability to perform its<\/span>
traditional task.<\/span>
SERIOUS FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Lack of bone and muscle development (weakness).<\/span>
\u2022 Nose partially pigmented in adults specimens.<\/span>
\u2022 Small, weak or unhealthy teeth.<\/span>
\u2022 Entropion, ectropion.<\/span>
\u2022 Eyes of round appearance due to the shape of the eyelids, bulging<\/span>
eyes, light or yellow.<\/span>
\u2022 Barrel chest.<\/span>
\u2022 Keel chest. Flat ribs. <\/span>
\u2022 Lack of depth of chest, which does not reach the level of the<\/span>
elbows.<\/span>
\u2022 Lack of angulation on the limbs.<\/span>
\u2022 Croup higher than withers.<\/span>
\u2022 Ambling movement (pacing).<\/span>
\u2022 Males and females whose weight does not comply with the<\/span>
official valid standard and not in proportion to the size of the<\/span>
dog.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span>
shall be disqualified.<\/span>
\u2022 Over or undershot mouth.<\/span>
\u2022 Deafness.<\/span>
\u2022 Lack of type.<\/span>
\u2022 Long hair.<\/span>
\u2022 Total lack of pigmentation of the nose in dogs aged 2 years or<\/span>
more.<\/span>
\u2022 Brown nose.<\/span>
\u2022 Pendulous lips.<\/span>
\u2022 Spots on the hair of the body.<\/span>
\u2022 More than one spot on the head.<\/span>
\u2022 Height above or below the limits established in the standard.<\/span>
\u2022 Eyes of different colour or blue.<\/span>
\u2022 Lack of sexual dimorphism.<\/span>
N.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span>
conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
