During the centuries, the great marshlands were drained and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">turned into arable land. Subsequently the Lagotto changed from being<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a water dog to an excellent dog for searching truffles in the flat open<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">country and in the hills of Romagna.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: Small to medium-sized dog, well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">proportioned, powerfully built, of a rustic appearance, with a dense,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">curly coat of woolly texture.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: The dog is nearly as high as long<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(nearly square). The length of the head is 4\/10 of the height at the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">withers. The length of the skull should be slightly more than the length<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the muzzle. The depth of the chest is less than 50 % (about 44 %)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the height at the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: A natural gift for searching and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">its very good nose has made the breed very efficient in truffle<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">searching. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The former hunting instinct has been modified by genetic selection;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hence his work is not distracted by the scent of game. The Lagotto is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tractable, undemanding, keen, affectionate, very attached to his owner<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and easy to train. He is also a very good companion and an excellent<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">watchdog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong>: Viewed from above, trapezoidal in shape and moderately<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">broad; the upper longitudinal axes of the skull and the muzzle diverge<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: Broad at the level of the zygomatic arches, and as long as it is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">broad. Viewed from the side, from occiput to stop, the skull should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">longer than the muzzle. It is slightly convex and tends to flatten out at<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the back of the skull. Frontal sinuses well developed, brows marked,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the medio-frontal furrow pronounced, occipital crest short and not<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">very developed, supraorbital fossae slightly marked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Not too pronounced, but evident.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: Large with nostrils wide open and mobile. Median groove<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strongly pronounced. Viewed in profile, the nose continues on the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">same level as the muzzle and protrudes very slightly from the front<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">edge of the lips. The colour ranges from light to dark brown,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">depending on the colour of the coat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: Fairly broad, a little shorter than the skull, it\u2019s depth being<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">only slightly less than the length. Muzzle is slightly wedge shaped and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">giving a rather blunt profile. The nasal bridge has a straight profile.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: The lips are not too thick; they are rather tight, so that the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">mandible determines the lower profile of the muzzle. Lips are covered<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with a long and rather bristly moustache. Viewed from the front, the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lips form a wide semi-circle. The colour of the lip-rims ranges from<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">light to dark brown.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth: Jaws strong with almost straight branches and a relatively<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">spacious mandibular body. Scissor or pincer bite with complete white<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and well-developed teeth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Slightly reverse scissors bite acceptable.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheeks: Flat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>EYES<\/strong>: Large, but never exaggerated, rounded in shape filling the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">socket and set fairly well apart. The colour of the iris ranges from<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ochre to hazel and dark brown depending on the colour of the coat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyelids are close fitting and the colour of the eye-rims ranges from<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">light to dark brown. Eyelashes very well developed. Look alert,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">expression keen and lively.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>EARS<\/strong>: Medium-sized in proportion to the head, triangular with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rounded tips; their base is rather wide; they are set just above the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">zygomatic arches. Hanging at rest or slightly raised when the dog is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">attentive. If pulled towards the nose they should reach the muzzle at<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1\/4 of its length. The inner part of the auricle is also covered with hair.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: Strong, muscular, lean, of oval cross section; well set off from<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the nape and absolutely free from dewlap, slightly arched. In males the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">perimeter of the neck can reach the double of its length. The length of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the neck is a little less than the total length of the head.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>: Compact and strong, as long as the height at the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Topline: Straight from the withers to the croup.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers: They rise above the level of the croup; the highest points of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the shoulder blades are not too close, but quite high set and well laid<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back: Straight, very muscular.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loin: Short coupled, very strong, in profile slightly convex. Width is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">equal or slightly exceeds the length.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: Long, wide, muscular, slightly sloping.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest: Well developed, reaching down to the elbows. Although fairly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">narrow in front, from the sixth rib the chest widens towards the back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline and belly: Long sternal section in form of a straight line; the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">following tuck-up is only slight.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong>: Set on neither too high nor too low tapering towards the end.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When hanging, it should barely reach the hocks. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The tail is covered with woolly and rather bristly hair. At rest carried<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">scimitar like; when attentive decidedly raised. When working or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">excited can be carried over the back, but never curled.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General Appearance: Regular, upright seen from the front and in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">profile.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulder: Shoulder blades long, well laid back (52\u00b0\u201355\u00b0), muscular,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strong and closely attached to the chest, but moving freely.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm: Muscular, of thin bone structure, as long as the shoulder<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">blade; its inclination to the horizontal ranges from 58\u00b0\u2013 60\u00b0.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbow: Well attached to the chest wall, but not too tightly; covered<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with thin skin; parallel to the median sagittal plane of the body as are<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the upper arms. The tip of the elbow is located on a vertical line<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lowered from the back end of the scapula to the ground.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm: Perfectly vertical, long, with compact, strong bone of oval<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">cross-section.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carpus (Wrist): Viewed from the front in a vertical line with the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">forearm; fine, robust and mobile; pisiform bone markedly protruding.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metacarpus (Pastern): Rather less thick and of finer bone compared<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with the forearm, it\u2019s fine and resilient. Seen in profile, it forms an<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">angle of 75\u00b0\u201380\u00b0 to the ground.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet: Slightly rounded, compact, with arched and tight toes. Nails<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strong and curved. Pads well pigmented. Inter-digital membranes very<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">well developed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General Appearance: Powerful, upright seen from the rear, well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">proportioned to the size of the dog and parallel.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh: Long, with clearly defined and visible muscles. The axis of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">femur has a distinct inclination of 80\u00b0 to the horizontal. The thigh is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">parallel to the median plane of the body.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle (Knee): The angle of the stifle ranges from 130\u00b0\u2013135\u00b0.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh: Slightly longer than the thigh, well boned and muscled,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with marked muscular groove.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Its inclination to the horizontal ranges from 50\u00b0 to 55\u00b0. Its direction is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">parallel to the median plane of body.\u2028<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock joint: Broad, thick, lean, with clear-cut bone and well angulated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus (Rear Pastern): Thin, cylindrical, perpendicular to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ground. No dewclaws.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet: Slightly more oval-shaped than forefeet and toes slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">less arched.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT:<\/strong> Walk is regular; trot is energetic and brisk,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">gallop for short periods.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong>: Thin, close fitting all over the body, without wrinkles.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pigmentation of the skin connecting with mucous membranes and of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pads ranges from light to dark and very dark brown.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT\u2028<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: Of woolly texture, never twisted to form thin cords, semi- rough<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">on the surface, with tight, ring shaped curls, with visible undercoat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Curls must be evenly distributed all over the body and tail, except on<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the head, where the curls are not as tight forming abundant eyebrows,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">whiskers and beard. Even the cheeks are covered with thick hair. On<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the ears, the hair tends to show looser curls, but remains very wavy.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No short hair on the ears. The topcoat and especially the undercoat is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">water-proof. If not clipped, the hair tends to become felted (as it<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">continues to grow); therefore a complete clipping must be performed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">at least once a year. Felted topcoat and undercoat must be removed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">periodically. The clipped coat must not be thicker than max four<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">centimetres and it should be uniform with the silhouette of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Only on the head the coat can be longer, but not as long as to cover<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the eyes. The area around the genitals and anus should be clipped<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">short. The coat must not be formed and brushed up in the fashion of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the Poodles and Bichon fris\u00e9 breeds or clipped short preventing it from<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">curling or assessment of texture. Any excessive hair styling will<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">exclude the dog from being qualified. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The correct clip is un-pretentious and contributes to accentuate the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">natural, rustic look typical of the breed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour: Off-white solid colour, white with brown or orange patches,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">orange roan, brown roan, brown (in different shades) with or without<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">white, orange with or without white. Some dogs have a brown to dark<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brown mask. Tan markings (in different shades) allowed.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SIZE AND WEIGHT:\u2028<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers:\u2028 Males: 43\u2013 48 cm (ideal height: 46 cm).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: 41\u2013 46 cm (ideal height: 43 cm).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tolerance of 1 cm over or under.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight: Males: 13 \u2013 16 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: 11 \u2013 14 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the health and welfare of the dog and on its ability to perform its<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">traditional work.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Untypical specimen.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Axes of the skull and the muzzle converging.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Partial and\/or total de-pigmentation.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Dish-faced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Overshot bite.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Pronounced undershot bite.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Wall-eye.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tail curled over the back;
