Formerly scattered all over Italy, in the recent<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">past, the breed was only prevalent in the province of Apulia and in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the adjacent regions of Southern Italy. His name derives from the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Latin \u201ccohors\u201d, which means \u201cprotector, guardian of the farmyard\u201d.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: Medium to large sized. Robust and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sturdy dog, nevertheless with some elegance. Lean and powerful<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">muscles.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: The dog is rectangular in outline<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and is slightly longer than tall. (The length of the dog is 11% greater<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">than the height of the dog). The length of the head reaches 36 % of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the height at the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Guardian of property, family<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and livestock; extremely agile and responsive. In the past, it has been<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">used for herding cattle and hunting big game. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong>: Large and typically molossoid. The upper longitudinal axes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the skull and the muzzle are slightly convergent, without evident<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">wrinkles.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: Broad at the zygomatic arches the width is equal to the length.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Convex in front, it becomes flat behind the forehead as far as the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">occiput. The medio-frontal furrow is visible, beginning at the stop<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and ending at about the middle of the skull.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Well defined, with prominent frontal sinuses.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: Black. A grey mask may have a nose colour of the same<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nuance. Large nose with ample open nostrils. Nose placed on the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">same line as the nasal bridge.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: Strong, square, noticeably shorter than the skull, ratio<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">muzzle : skull approximately 1 : 2. The front part of the muzzle is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">flat; the lateral surfaces are parallel; the muzzle is as broad as it is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">long. Seen from the side it is deep. The profile of the nasal bridge is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">straight.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: The upper lips; seen from the front, form an inverted \u201dU\u201d at<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">their meeting point; seen from the side hangs moderately. They cover<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the lower jaw and determine the profile of the lower part of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">muzzle.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth: Jaws are very large thick and curved. Slightly undershot<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">but no more than 5 mm. Level bite tolerable but not sought after.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheeks: The masseter region is fully evident, but not bulging.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes: Medium-sized, slightly protruding, but never exaggerated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Close to ovoid in shape, set well apart in an almost sub-frontal<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">position. Eyelids close fitting. The colour of the iris is as dark as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">possible but according to the coat colour. Expression is keen and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">attentive.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears: Triangular, drooping, of medium size. With a wide set-on that<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is much above the zygomatic arches. Ears are un-cropped.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: Strong, muscular, as long as the head. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>: The body is somewhat longer than the height at the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sturdy built but not square.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers: Pronounced, rising above the level of the croup.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back: Straight, very muscular and firm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loin: Short and strong.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: Long and wide, slightly inclined.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest: Well developed all through reaches to the elbow.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong>: Natural. Set on fairly high; very broad at the root. In action<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">carried high, but never erect or curled.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulder: Long, oblique, very muscular.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm: Strong.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm: Straight, very strong.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carpus (Wrist): Elastic.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metacarpus (pastern): Elastic and just slightly sloping.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet: Cat feet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh: Long, broad, back line of thigh convex.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh: Strong, not fleshy.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle (Knee): Solid, moderately angulated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock joint: Moderately angulated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Thick and dry.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet: Slightly less compact than the forefeet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Long stride, extended trot; the preferred gait<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is the trot.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong>: Fairly thick, rather close fitting. <\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: Short, shiny, very dense with a slight undercoat of vitreous<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">texture.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour: Black, lead-grey, slate-grey, light grey, light fawn; dark<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fawn and stag red; dark wheat colour (stripes on different shades of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fawn or grey); in fawn coloured and brindle dogs the black or grey<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">mask on the muzzle should not go beyond the line of the eyes. A<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">small white patch on the chest, on the tip of the toes and on the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bridge of the nose is acceptable.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SIZE AND WEIGHT:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers: Males: 64 cm \u2013 68 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: 60 cm \u2013 64 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With a tolerance of 2 cm, more or less taller.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight: Males: 45 \u2013 50 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: 40 \u2013 45 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight according to the size of dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">upon the health and welfare of the dog and its ability to perform its<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">traditional work.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SEVERE FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Axes of muzzle and skull parallel or very marked converging;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lateral surfaces of the muzzle converging.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Partial depigmentation of the nose.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Scissor bite; undershot bite more than 5 mm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Ringed tail, tail in vertical position.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Permanent amble when trotting.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Over-or under size.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Presence of dewclaws. <\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shall be disqualified.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Axes of muzzle and skull diverging.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Total depigmentation of the nose.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Bridge of nose concave or convex (Roman nose).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Overshot mouth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Partial or complete palpebral depigmentation. Wall eye (blue<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">flecked); strabism (squinted).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tailless, too short tail.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Semi-long, smooth or fringed hair.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 All colours not indicated in the standard; large white patches.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>N.B<\/strong>.:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">descended into the scrotum.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span><br \/><span
