ORIGIN<\/strong>: Germany.<\/span>
DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE OFFICIAL VALID<\/span><\/strong>
STANDARD<\/strong>: 25.10.2000.<\/span>
UTILIZATION<\/strong>: According to his purpose of a versatile working<\/span>
gundog the German Wirehaired Pointer must possess all the<\/span>
dispositions asked for the breed. He must be usable for all the<\/span>
work in the field, in the woods and in water before and after the<\/span>
shot.<\/span>

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY:<\/strong> The Deutsch Drahthaar is a<\/span>
rough coated pointing dog whose initial breeding started at the end of<\/span>
the 19th century (Griffon Korthals), and that has been systematically<\/span>
bred from the beginning of this century based on the ideas of<\/span>
\u201eHegewald\u201c (Sigismund Freiherr von Zedlitz and Neukirch) with the<\/span>
sealed aim of creating an assertive, efficient wirehaired German<\/span>
gundog. In accordance with the principle of \u201eby working ability to<\/span>
type\u201c and with consequent regard to freedom of breeding, within a<\/span>
short time a gundog has been developed from the best of the rough<\/span>
coated types (Pudelpointer, Griffon Korthals, German Broken<\/span>
Coated Pointing Dog) and by using the German Shorthaired Pointer,<\/span>
that excels through his useful weatherproof coat and his versatility in<\/span>
all fields of practical hunting. Due to these characteristics, the<\/span>
Deutsch Drahthaar within a few decades has developed to become<\/span>
the most popular and well-tried among the large gundog breeds in<\/span>
Germany as well as in many countries of the world. <\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: A pointing dog of noble appearance,<\/span>
with harsh coat completely protecting the skin, with an attentive<\/span>
expression full of energy. The movement should be powerful, ground<\/span>
covering, flowing and harmonious.<\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: The length of the body and the<\/span>
height at the withers should be as equal as possible. The length of the<\/span>
body may exceed the height at the withers by up to 3 cm.<\/span>
BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Firm, self-controlled, wellbalanced, without shyness of game, neither sensitive when shots are<\/span>
fired nor shy or aggressive.<\/span>
HEAD<\/strong>: In proportion to the size and the sex of the dog. Lines of<\/span>
head slightly diverging.<\/span>
CRANIAL REGION:<\/span>
Skull: Flat, slightly rounded at the sides only, moderately broad,<\/span>
pronounced superciliary ridges.<\/span>
Stop: Clearly visibly pronounced.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION:<\/span>
Nose: Strongly pigmented corresponding to the colour of the coat.<\/span>
Nostrils well opened.<\/span>
Muzzle: Long, broad, strong, deep. Slight roman nose.<\/span>
Lips: Thick, close-fitting, not overhanging. Well pigmented<\/span>
corresponding to the colour of the coat.<\/span>
Jaws \/ teeth: Large teeth. Powerful jaws with a regular, complete<\/span>
scissor bite with the upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth<\/span>
and set square to the jaws. 42 teeth according to the dentition<\/span>
formula.<\/span>
Eyes: As dark as possible, neither too deep-set nor protruding, with<\/span>
an alert, lively expression. Eyerims well pigmented and close-fitting.<\/span>
Ears: Of medium size, set on high and wide, not twisted.<\/span>
NECK<\/strong>: Of medium length, strongly muscled; slightly arched<\/span>
napeline, clean cut throat, no dewlap. <\/span>
BODY<\/strong>:<\/span>
Topline: Slightly sloping from the withers in a straight line.<\/span>
Withers: Pronounced.<\/span>
Back: Firm, well muscled.<\/span>
Loins: Short, broad, muscular loin region.<\/span>
Croup: Long and broad, slightly sloping and well muscled. Broad<\/span>
pelvis.<\/span>
Chest: Broad and deep with well developed forechest, the breastbone<\/span>
reaching as far back as possible. Ribs well arched.<\/span>
Underline and belly: Slight tuck-up towards the rear in an elegant<\/span>
curve.<\/span>
TAIL<\/strong>: Following the topline, carried as horizontally as possible or<\/span>
slightly raised, but not steep. Neither too thick nor too thin. Docked<\/span>
for the hunting purposes. (In countries where docking is prohibited<\/span>
by law, the tail may be left natural. It should reach to the hocks and<\/span>
should be carried straight or slightly sabre-like.)<\/span>
LIMBS<\/strong>:<\/span>
FOREQUARTERS:<\/span>
General appearance : Viewed from the front, straight and parallel,<\/span>
viewed from the side, legs set well under the body. The distance<\/span>
from the elbows to the ground to be approximately equal to the<\/span>
distance from the elbows to the withers.<\/span>
Shoulders: Well laid-back, sloping shoulder blade, strongly muscled.<\/span>
Forming a good angle together with the upper arm.<\/span>
Upper arm: As long as possible, with well developed, lean muscles.<\/span>
Elbows: Close to the body, neither turning in nor out. Good<\/span>
angulation between upper arm and forearm.<\/span>
Forearm: Lean, set perpendicular, strong bones.<\/span>
Carpal joint: Strong.<\/span>
Pasterns: Slightly sloping.<\/span>
Front feet: Oval-round with well-knit toes and sufficiently thick,<\/span>
tough, robust and well-pigmented pads. They are set parallel, neither<\/span>
turning in nor out in stance or when moving. <\/span>
HINDQUARTERS:<\/span>
General appearance : Viewed from behind, straight and parallel.<\/span>
Well angulated at the stifles and the hocks. Strong bones.<\/span>
Upper thigh: Long, broad, muscular, with good angulation between<\/span>
pelvis and upper thigh.<\/span>
Stifle: Strong, with good angulation between upper and lower thigh.<\/span>
Lower thigh: Long, muscular and sinewy.<\/span>
Hocks: Short, perpendicular to the ground.<\/span>
Hind feet: Oval-round with well-knit toes and sufficiently thick,<\/span>
tough, robust and well-pigmented pads. They are set parallel in<\/span>
stance and when moving, turning neither in nor out.<\/span>
GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Covering lots of ground, with good reach<\/span>
and drive, parallel coming and going; with upstanding posture.<\/span>
SKIN<\/strong>: Tight, close-fitting, without folds.<\/span>
COAT<\/strong>:<\/span>
HAIR: Wirehaired harsh, flat lying and dense. Outer coat<\/span>
approximately 2 to 4 cm long; dense, waterresistant undercoat. The<\/span>
outlines of the body may not be obscured by longer coat. Through its<\/span>
harshness and density it should provide as good protection against<\/span>
weather and injuries as possible. The lower parts of the legs, as well<\/span>
as the lower region of the brisket and the belly, should be shorter but<\/span>
densely coated, the head and the ears to be shorter and at the same<\/span>
time denser but never softer coated. Pronounced eyebrows and a well<\/span>
developed not too long, as harsh as possible beard emphasise the<\/span>
determined expression.<\/span>
COLOUR:<\/span>
\u2022 Brown roan with or without patches.<\/span>
\u2022 Black roan, with or without patches.<\/span>
\u2022 Brown with or without white chest patch.<\/span>
\u2022 Light roan.<\/span>
No other colour is permitted. <\/span>
SIZE<\/strong>: Height at withers: Dogs: 61 to 68 cm.<\/span>
Bitches: 57 to 64 cm.<\/span>
FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure of the foregoing points must be considered<\/span>
a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded<\/span>
should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the<\/span>
health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
SEVERE FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Short or narrow or pointed muzzle.<\/span>
\u2022 Weak dentition.<\/span>
\u2022 Very loose eyelids.<\/span>
\u2022 Swayback or roach back.<\/span>
\u2022 Heavily overbuilt.<\/span>
\u2022 Elbows heavily turning in or out.<\/span>
\u2022 Bandy-legged, cow hocked or close behind, in stance as<\/span>
well as in movement.<\/span>
\u2022 Pacing permanently when stepping or trotting, stiff or<\/span>
mincing gait.<\/span>
\u2022 Sparce coat, lacking undercoat.<\/span>
DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical of behavioural<\/span>
abnormalities shall be disqualified.<\/span>
\u2022 Over- or undershot bite, wry mouth, missing teeth other than<\/span>
P1, the canines being set too narrow.<\/span>
\u2022 Entropion, ectropion, differently coloured eyes.<\/span>
\u2022 Innate kinky or stumpy tail.<\/span>
\u2022 Faulty pigment. <\/span>
N.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed<\/span>
typical conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
