CLASSIFICATION<\/strong>: Group 9 Companion and toy dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Section 1 Bichons and related breeds<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">-1.1 Bichons.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Without working trial.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY:<\/strong> The Bichon Fris\u00e9 was<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brought to France from Italy during the Renaissance. As it looked<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">like a very small Barbet, it was given the name of \u201cbarbichon\u201d which<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">was then shortened to \u201cbichon\u201d. In the 17th and 18th centuries, many<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">renowned painters depicted these little dogs which accompanied<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">kings, nobles and other noteworthy persons. The breed came back<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">into fashion under Napol\u00e9on III, and it was known at that time as the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cT\u00e9n\u00e9riffe\u201d. It was then popularized, becoming well-liked in both<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Belgium and France. It almost disappeared after the two world wars.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is thanks to the passion of a few French and Belgian breeders that a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">population was able to be reconstituted. The first dog, registered in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Belgium, was Pitou, born on 23rd March 1924 and was registered in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the Belgian studbook (LOSH) in 1932. N\u00b0 1 in the French studbook<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(LOF) was attributed to Ida, a female Bichon Fris\u00e9 on 18th October<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1934. The current French name \u2013 Bichon \u00e0 poil fris\u00e9 \u2013 was given in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1978 and was recognized as a Franco-Belgian breed. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE:<\/strong> A cheerful little dog, with a lively<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">gait and very loose, white corkscrew-curled hair. Head carried<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">proud; the eyes are dark, lively and expressive. The tail is carried<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">gracefully curved over the back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS:<\/strong> The Bichon Fris\u00e9 is longer than it<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is tall, the length of the body (from the point of the shoulder to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">point of the buttock) is greater than the height at the withers. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">body is rectangular.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The ratio of the length of the skull to the length of the muzzle is 3 to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The depth of the chest is equal to the height measured from the floor<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to the elbows.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR AND TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: It is a true companion dog<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">which can be taken anywhere without trouble. It is neither nervous<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nor does it often bark, it is very sociable towards both people and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dogs, even if it does not know them. It has a great capacity to adapt<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and is very attached to its masters.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong>: In good proportion with the body. The eyes and nose, being<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">three easily visible black points on an otherwise white head, should<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">form an equilateral triangle.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: Rather flat to the touch, although the furnishings make it<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">appear rounded. The frontal furrow is slightly pronounced. The skull<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is longer than the muzzle. It is not as wide as it is long and makes up<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3\/5 of the length of the head. The superciliary ridges are not too<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pronounced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Marked, but not too pronounced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: Rounded, black, finely grained and glossy.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: Very wide at the base, not becoming much thinner towards<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the nose, it forms 2\/5 of the length of the head. Straight nose bridge,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">neither down-pointing nor up-tilting. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: Fine, rather lean, falling only enough to cover the lower lip, but<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">never heavy or pendulous; they are normally pigmented black up to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the corner. The lower lip must not be heavy, visible or slack. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">corner of the lips is well closed and does not allow the inner side of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the lips to be seen.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/teeth: The upper and lower jaws are wide, each one with six<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">evenly set incisors. Scissor bite is preferred; pincer bite is tolerated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Full dentition is preferred.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheeks: Flat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes: Very dark, medium-sized, rather round in shape, neither<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">almond-shaped nor protruding. They must not be set obliquely. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pigmentation of the eye rims must be completely black. When the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dog is looking forwards, the whites of the eyes should not be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">showing.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears: The ears are drooping and are well-furnished with profuse hair.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They are attached above the eye-line, forming an equilateral triangle,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and hang vertically along the cheeks. When they are pulled forward,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the leathers should reach at least the corner of the lips, and at the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">most should reach the middle of the muzzle. The ears are mobile,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">especially when something catches the dog\u2019s attention.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: Quite long, carried high and proudly. It is round and slim<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">near the skull, gradually broadening to fit smoothly into the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shoulders. Its length is approximately a third of its body length.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Without dewlap.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Topline: Straight, approximately horizontal up to the base of the tail.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers: Quite marked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back: Horizontal, well-muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loin: Wide and well-muscled, slightly arched.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: Wide, slightly rounded, very slightly sloping.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest: Well-developed, well let down to the elbows, deep brisket, the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">floating ribs are well sprung and do not end abruptly, the chest being<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rather long. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline and line of the belly: The underside of the chest rises<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly towards the line of the belly, which is moderately tucked up.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The flanks are well tucked up; the skin is fine and not loose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong>: Attached moderately high, slightly below the line of the back,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">it is carried raised and gracefully curved in line with the spine,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">without being rolled up or docked. The extremity of the tail,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regardless of the hair, does not touch the dog\u2019s back. The tail<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">furnishings may fall onto the back. The tail must not hang when the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dog is moving.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>LIMBS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: Seen from the front, the forelegs are straight.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Moderate bone.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulder: Well laid back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm: Forming good angulation with the shoulders.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbows: Close to chest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm: Straight and perpendicular seen from all sides.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pastern: Short and straight seen from the front, very slightly sloping<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">seen from the side.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Feet: Tight, round and well knuckled up, neither turned inward nor<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">outwards, the pads must be black and the nails should preferably be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: The pelvis is broad. The hind legs are well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">muscled and seen from behind, they are parallel to each other. They<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">are vertical.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh: broad and well muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle joint (knee): Well angulated, neither turning in nor out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh: Approximately the same length as the thigh.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock joint: Set low and well marked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rear pasterns: Lean, without dewclaws. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Feet: Tight, round and well knuckled up, neither turned inward nor<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">outwards, the pads must be black and the nails should preferably be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Quick-moving, free, covering a lot of ground.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When trotting, the head is carried high, the tail is well curved over<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the back. Hind legs have good drive. Parallel tracking.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong>: Stretched tight over all the body; dark pigmentation is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">preferred; however, it does not influence the colour of the hair. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">scrotum should preferably be black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>COAT<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: Profuse coat. The hair of the outer coat forms loose spiral curls<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(this is the curly structure). The soft and dense undercoat must be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">present. The coat is neither flat nor corded, neither woolly, nor<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">matted.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour: Pure white. However, before 12 months of age, the coat can<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">have the tendency to be slightly beige (champagne), but this tinge<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">must not cover more than 10% of the dog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SIZE AND WEIGHT:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers: 25 to 29 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A tolerance of 1 cm taller is accepted for males,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A tolerance of 2 cm lower is accepted for females,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">provided that the proportions remain balanced and that the sexual<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dimorphism is well marked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight: Approximately 5 kg, in proportion with the size.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fault, and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">health and welfare of the dog. <\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SEVERE FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Temperament: A dog which is lacking in self-assurance.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Head: Pointed muzzle.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Nose: Loss of pigmentation.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Lips: Pink or partially depigmented, slack corners of the lips.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Eyes: Light-coloured, incomplete pigmentation of the eye rims,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">visible whites of the eyes. The coat under the eyes should not<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">have traces of lacrimal secretions.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Chest: Underdeveloped.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tail: Rolled up, curled in a ring, raised perpendicularly or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dropped whilst in movement.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Limbs: Insufficient angulations.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Hair: Not profuse enough and\/or incorrect curl, causing the coat<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to be open or flattened.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Colour: Colouring in the coat (except for dogs under the age of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">12 months).<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing any physical or behavioural<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">abnormalities will be disqualified.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Dentition: Prognathism (overshot or undershot).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Total depigmentation of the nose, lip edges and rims of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">eyelids.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Eyes: Small, almond-shaped, protruding, too light or wall eye.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Hair: Total lack of curly structure.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Colour: Any colour other than white in the coat on subjects over<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the age of 12 months.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Size: Outside tolerated measurements.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 General appearance: Any evidence of dwarfism.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 General build: Any dog whose general build fits into a square. <\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">N.B.:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fully descended into the scrotum.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">conformation, should be used for breeding.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ADDITION TO STANDARD:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Clipping is accepted.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Head: The ears, beard and moustache are shortened and sculpted so<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">as to give the head either a round or a bell shape.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Body: In order to give the impression of elegance and slenderness,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the hair is shortened (but not less than 3 cm) on the loins and the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">flanks.
