The bulldog<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">we know is the product of different crossings done by enthusiastic<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">breeders in the popular quarters of Paris in the 1880s. During that<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">period, the Bulldog was a dog belonging to Parisian market porters,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">butchers and coachmen, it soon won over high society and the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">artistic world by its particular appearance and character. It rapidly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">became popular. The first breed club was founded in 1880 in Paris.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first registration dates from 1885 and the first standard was<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">established in 1898, the year in which the French Kennel Club<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">recognized the French Bulldog breed. The first dog of this breed was<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shown at an exhibition as early as 1887. The standard, modified in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1931-1932 and 1948, was reformulated in 1986 by H.F. Reant with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the collaboration of R. Triquet (F.C.I. publication 1987), then in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1994 by Violette Guillon (F.C.I. publication 1995) and in 2012 by<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the French Bulldog Club committee. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE:<\/strong> The type is of a small-sized<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">molossian. A powerful dog for its small size, short, stocky, compact<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in all its proportions, smooth-coated, with a snub nose, erect ears and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a naturally short tail. Must have the appearance of an active,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">intelligent, very muscular dog, of a compact build with a solid bone<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">structure. No point is exaggerated compared to the others, which<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">could spoil the dog\u2019s general harmony, in appearance and in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">movement.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: The length of the body \u2013<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">between the point of the shoulder and the point of the buttocks \u2013<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly surpasses the height at the withers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The length of muzzle is about 1\/6 of the total length of the head.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Sociable, lively, playful,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">possessive and keen companion dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD<\/strong>: Must be strong, broad and square, covered by the skin of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">head which forms symmetrical folds and wrinkles, without excess.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: Broad, almost flat from ear to ear, domed forehead.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Proeminent superciliary arches, separated by a particularly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">developed furrow between the eyes. The furrow must not extend<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">onto the skull. External occipital protuberance is barely developed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Pronounced.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION: The head of the Bulldog is characterized by a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shortening of the maxillary-nasal part as well as a slight to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">moderate slope of the nose backwards. The nose is slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">upturned (\u201csnub nose\u201d).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: Black, broad, snubbed, with symmetrical and well opened<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nostrils, slanting towards the rear. The slope of the nostrils as well as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the upturned nose must, however, allow normal nasal breathing.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: Very short, broad, with concentric symmetrical folds.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: Thick, a little loose and black. The upper lip meets the lower<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lip at its middle, completely covering the teeth. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The profile of the upper lip is descending and rounded. The tongue<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">must never show when the dog is not excited.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth: Broad and powerful. The lower jaw projects in front of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the upper jaw and turns up. The arch of the lower incisors is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rounded. The jaw must not show lateral deviation, or torsion.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The gap between the incisors of the upper and the lower jaw<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should not be strictly delimited, the essential condition being<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">that the upper and the lower lips meet to completely cover the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">teeth. The lower incisors surpass the upper incisors. Sufficiently<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">developed incisives and canines. Complete bite is desirable.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cheeks: Well developed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes: Clearly visible eyes, striking with lively expression, set low,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">quite far from the nose and the ears, dark coloured, rather large,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">rounded, showing no trace of white (sclera) when the dog is looking<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">straight forward. Rims of eyelids must be black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears: Medium size, wide at the base and rounded at the top. Set high<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">on the head, but not too close together, carried erect. The ear is open<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">towards the front. The skin must be fine and soft to the touch.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: Short, powerful, slightly arched, without dewlap, broadens<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">towards the shoulder.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Topline: Rising progressively, but not excessively, from the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">withers towards the loin. That conformation \u2013 also called roachback \u2013 is typical for the breed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back: Broad and muscular, firm without slackness.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loin: Short, broad and arched.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: Well sloping.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest: Cylindrical and well let down (slightly under the elbows);<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">very well sprung ribs, so-called \u201cbarrel shaped\u201d. Fore chest, broad<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and square-shaped, seen from the front.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline and belly: Tucked up but not whippety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong>: Naturally short, ideally long enough to cover the anus, set<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">low, rather straight, thick at the base and tapering at the tip. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A kinked, knotted, broken or relatively long tail that does not<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">reach beyond the point of the hocks, is admitted. It is carried<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">low. Even in action, the tail must not rise above the horizontal.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>LIMBS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: Forelegs upright (and straight) seen in profile<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and from the front.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulder: Must be well laid back.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm: Short, thick, muscular, slightly curved.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbows: Close and tight to the body.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm: Short, straight and muscular.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carpus (Wrist): Solid and short.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metacarpus (Pastern): Short and slightly oblique seen in profile.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet: Round, compact, of small dimension, i.e. \u00abcat feet\u00bb,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">turning slightly outward. The toes are tight, nails short, thick<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: The hindlegs are strong and muscular, a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">little longer than the forelegs, thus raising the hindquarters. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">legs are upright as seen both in profile and from behind.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh: Well muscled, firm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock joint: Quite well let down, neither too angulated nor too<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">straight. Tarsus : solid.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Short.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet: Round, compact, turning neither inward nor outward.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: The legs moving parallel to the median<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">plane of the body, whether seen in front or in profile. Free,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">powerful and smooth movement.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong>: Firm. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>COAT<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: Smooth coat, close, glossy and soft, without undercoat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour: fawn, brindled or not, with or without white spotting.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coat with colouring:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Brindle: Fawn coat moderately characterized by transversal<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dark brindling creating a \u2018tiger-marked\u2019 effect, strongly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brindled coats must not cover out the fawn ground colour. A<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">black mask may be present. Limited white spotting is admissible.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fawn: Solid coat, from light fawn to dark fawn, sometimes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">presenting a paler colouring of the inclined parts, with or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">without a black mask, although masked subjects are preferred.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sometimes accompanied by limited white spotting.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coat with white spotting:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Brindled with moderate or important white spotting: So-called<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2018pied\u2019, the spotting being ideally distributed over the entire<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">subject. Some blotches on the skin are admissible.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fawn with moderate or important white spotting: So-called<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2018fawn and white\u2019, the spotting being ideally distributed over the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">entire dog. Some blotches of the skin are tolerated. The nose is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">always black, in all coat colours, never brown or blue. The allwhite subjects provided the edge of eyelids and nose are black \u2013<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">are admitted but not bred for, because of a risk of deafness.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SIZE AND WEIGHT<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers: Males: 27\u201335 cm. Females: 24\u201332 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A deviation of 1 cm above and below the standard is tolerated.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight: Males: 9\u201314 kg. Females: 8\u201313 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">500 g more than the standard weight is allowed when the subject<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is typical.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">health and welfare of the dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Strongly flecked with black brindle with white coat. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Fawn and white coat strongly red speckled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 In fawn coats, deep black trace extending along the spine.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 White stockings in brindles and fawns.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Light-coloured nails.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SEVERE FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Overtyped, exaggerated breed characteristics.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Muzzle too long or excessively short.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tongue visible when mouth is closed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Light eyes (hawk eye).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Horizontal topline from withers to loin.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Excessive depigmentation of the lips, nose, eyelids, the rim of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">which should never be entirely depigmented.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Pincer bite.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shall be disqualified.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Lacks type: insufficient ethnic characteristics which result in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the dog not really resembling other subjects of the breed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Completely closed nostrils.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Torsion or lateral deviation of the jaw, resulting in the tongue<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">constantly being visible.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Dog with lower incisors articulating behind upper incisors.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Dog with permanently visible canines (fangs), mouth being<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">closed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Heterochrome eyes (wall eye).<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Colour of nose other than black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Ears not carried erect.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Taillessness or ingrown tail.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Dewclaw on hindquarters.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Reversed hock.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Long, wired-haired or woolly coat. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Colour not in accordance with what is prescribed in the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">standard, namely black, black with fawn markings (black<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and tan) and all dilutions of black with or without white<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">spotting.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Size and weight outside the standard limits.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Respiratory distress.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Deafness.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">N.B.:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">descended into the scrotum.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">conformation,
