\nUTILIZATION<\/strong>: A hound with excellent stamina especially suited<\/span>
\nto hunting hare, fox and boar but can also be used as a tracking leash<\/span>
\nhound.<\/span>

\nbreeds.<\/span>

\nBRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong>: Posavatz, the scent hound<\/span>
\nfrom the Save Valley is an old hound breed, which descents from a<\/span>
\ntype of the \u201cIllyrischen Hound of Red Colour with markings\u201d. In the<\/span>
\ncemetery chapel next to the village of Beram (Istrien) one can find in<\/span>
\nthe fresco, dating from 1474, \u201cThe bow of the three Kings\u201d a dark<\/span>
\nwheaten dog with dropped ears. This was the first portrayal of the<\/span>
\nPosavatz Hound. The next portrayal is the altar fresco \u201cThe<\/span>
\nmotherhood of the Holy Virgin Mary\u201d from the 16th century in the<\/span>
\nMother of the Angels Church in Veli Losinj, where the ancestor of<\/span>
\ntoday\u2019s Posavatz Hound is depicted. There is also a description of<\/span>
\nthis hound in a manuscript from the year 1719 of the Dakovear<\/span>
\nBishop Petar Bakic, where it says, that the breeding of these hounds<\/span>
\nwas already well known in the 14th century. Franjo Bertic describes<\/span>
\nthe Posavatz Hound in the year 1854. The FCI published the first<\/span>
\nStandard for the Posavatz Hound on April 8th 1955.<\/span>
\nGENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: Strong hound-body, medium sized<\/span>
\ndog with balanced movements. The characteristic red-wheaten colour<\/span>
\ncomes in all shades. <\/span>
\nThe white markings are on head, neck, on the fore chest, the chest,<\/span>
\nthe belly, the lower limbs and at the tip of the tail. The difference<\/span>
\nbetween the genders has to be distinctive.<\/span>
\nIMPORTANT PROPORTIONS:<\/span><\/strong>
\nRectangular body; length to exceed height at the withers.<\/span>
\nHeight to the elbow is 50% of the height at the withers.<\/span>
\nThe length of skull to slightly exceed the length of muzzle.<\/span>
\nBEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: The breed is easy to train. This<\/span>
\nis a universal hound with a clear and melodic voice for hunting in all<\/span>
\nareas. Docile, neither nervous nor aggressive, reasonably lively<\/span>
\ntemperament. Very devoted to the owner.<\/span>
\nHEAD:<\/strong> The head is well proportioned to the body. The head has<\/span>
\nslight divergent lines.<\/span>
\nCRANIAL REGION:<\/span>
\nSkull: Slightly longer than the muzzle, it is broadest between the<\/span>
\nears. The temporal area is slightly rounded. The width of the skull<\/span>
\nexceeds its depth. The occipital bone and the frontal furrow are<\/span>
\nslightly pronounced.<\/span>
\nStop: Well developed but not too exaggerated.<\/span>
\nFACIAL REGION:<\/span>
\nNose: Strong with well-opened nostrils. The whole nose and the<\/span>
\ninside of the nostrils have to be black or dark brown pigmented.<\/span>
\nMuzzle: Strong, rectangular and full, slightly shorter than the skull,<\/span>
\ntapering from the stop towards the nose but not too pointed. The<\/span>
\nnasal bridge is straight or slightly convex (slight ram\u2019s nose).<\/span>
\nLips: Average thickness, tight-fitting to the jaw, the labial<\/span>
\ncommissure is not visible. The liprims are completely pigmented in<\/span>
\ncorrespondence with the colour of the nose leather.<\/span>
\nJaws\/Teeth: The jaws are strong, regular and the teeth are white and<\/span>
\nevenly placed in the jaws. Scissors bite; the incisors are vertical<\/span>
\nplaced in the jaws. A complete bite is desired (42 teeth in accordance<\/span>
\nwith the dental formula). Missing premolars PM1 and molars M3 are<\/span>
\nnot taken into account. The missing of other teeth is undesirable. <\/span>
\nCheeks: The chewing muscle and the cheekbone must not be too<\/span>
\naccentuated.<\/span>
\nEyes: Medium size, set moderately wide apart and semi frontal in an<\/span>
\nangle of 10\u201315 degrees to the horizontal line. Oval shaped and dark<\/span>
\nbrown, the expression is intelligent. The eyelids must not be loose<\/span>
\nand show no signs of Entropion or Ectropion. The eyelids have to be<\/span>
\nfully pigmented in correspondence with the colour of the nose<\/span>
\nleather.<\/span>
\nEars: Dropped, close fitting to the head, set at eye level. The ear is<\/span>
\ntriangular shaped, rounded at the tips, moderately long and<\/span>
\nmoderately thick. When drawn forward towards the nose they should<\/span>
\nreach the labial commissure. The ears must not show any folds, nor<\/span>
\nbe rolled in or sticking out. They are covered with short hair.<\/span>
\nNECK:<\/strong> Strong, well muscled and placed in an angle of 45 degrees to<\/span>
\nthe horizontal line. The neck tapers towards the head. The skin is<\/span>
\ntight fitting without dewlap or heavily developed folds.<\/span>
\nBODY<\/strong>: Body has to be strong.<\/span>
\nWithers: Pronounced.<\/span>
\nBack: Strong, well muscled, level.<\/span>
\nLoin: Medium length, broad, well muscled, solid and well attached<\/span>
\nto the croup.<\/span>
\nCroup: Well muscled, strong, broad and sloping in a 25\u201330 degree of<\/span>
\nangle towards the horizontal line. Slightly lower than the withers.<\/span>
\nChest: Deep, broad, but not too broad or barrelled. The ribcage has to<\/span>
\nreach to the elbow. Well sprung ribs.<\/span>
\nUnderline and belly: The belly shows a slight tuck up from the<\/span>
\nbreastbone towards the flanks.<\/span>
\nTAIL<\/strong>: Set as a continuation of the line of the croup. Strong at the<\/span>
\nroot, gradually tapering towards the tip of the tail and of average<\/span>
\nlength. Stretched, it reaches, at the most to the hock. Sabre shaped<\/span>
\ntail carried below the topline. Higher tail carriage tolerated when the<\/span>
\ndog is excited (in action). The tail is well covered with hair, slightly<\/span>
\nlonger on the underside, preferably like a little brush. <\/span>
\nLIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
\nFOREQUARTERS:<\/span>
\nGeneral appearance: Seen from the front the limbs have to be in good<\/span>
\nproportion to the body and show even angulation.<\/span>
\nShoulder: Of medium length, muscular. The shoulder angle is 115\u2013<\/span>
\n120 degrees.<\/span>
\nElbow: Close fitting to the chest.<\/span>
\nForearm: The bone is strong and rounded with strong muscle tone.<\/span>
\nParallel seen from front.<\/span>
\nCarpus ( Wrist): Short and elastic.<\/span>
\nMetacarpus (Pastern): Elastic, slightly sloping.<\/span>
\nFore feet: Oval shaped with tight toes and strong pads. The nails<\/span>
\nshould preferably be pigmented.<\/span>
\nHINDQUARTERS:<\/span>
\nGeneral appearance: Strong and elastic in action.<\/span>
\nThigh: Strong, broad and well muscled.<\/span>
\nLower thigh: Forms an angle of 40 degrees to the horizontal line.<\/span>
\nHock joint: Strong and solid.<\/span>
\nMetatarsus (Rear pastern): Nearly vertical to the ground, solid and<\/span>
\nelastic.<\/span>
\nHind feet: Oval shaped with tight toes and strong pads. The nails<\/span>
\nshould preferably be pigmented.<\/span>
\nGAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: The reach is substantial with a strong drive.<\/span>
\nThe movement has to be harmonious; there must be no twitching; the<\/span>
\nback has to be preferably steady and the limbs must not cross over.<\/span>
\nSKIN<\/strong>: Elastic, of medium thickness, well fitting the body, no<\/span>
\nwrinkles.<\/span>
\nCOAT<\/span><\/strong>
\nHair: The hair is harsh, dense, shiny, close lying to the body. The<\/span>
\nlength is 2\u20133 cm. On the back of the limbs the hair is slightly longer<\/span>
\n(up to 4 cm) also on the belly and on the underside of the tail, where<\/span>
\nit forms preferably a \u201clittle brush\u201d. <\/span>
\nColour: The basic colour of the hair is reddish wheaten in all shades<\/span>
\nwith white markings on the head, the neck, the fore chest, the chest,<\/span>
\nthe belly, the underside of the limbs and the tip of the tail. Never a<\/span>
\ndark brown or a chocolate brown colour which is not a permitted<\/span>
\ncolour. The total amount of white markings must not exceed one<\/span>
\nthird of the whole body. The white should be clear without any<\/span>
\nmottling of the basic colour.<\/span>
\nCharacteristic white markings are placed:<\/span>
\nOn the head, as a blaze or a stripe (no white on ears).<\/span>
\nOn the neck, as a collar (complete or partial) or as a stripe.<\/span>
\nOn the fore chest, a smaller or broader white part.<\/span>
\nOn the belly, a white stripe.<\/span>
\nOn the limbs, white parts on the feet, also as socks on<\/span>
\nthe pasterns.<\/span>
\nOn the tail, white tip of the tail.<\/span>
\nIt is desirable that there are white markings on all mentioned parts of<\/span>
\nthe body and that they are symmetrically spread over the body.<\/span>
\nMissing white markings on the mentioned parts of the body are seen<\/span>
\nas a fault. White markings are not allowed on any other parts of the<\/span>
\nbody.<\/span>
\nSIZE<\/strong>:<\/span>
\nHeight at the withers: Males: 50\u201356 cm.<\/span>
\nFemales: 47\u201353 cm.<\/span>
\nHeight difference of +\/- 2 cm in males and females of excellent type<\/span>
\nand conformation will be tolerated.<\/span>
\nFAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
\nconsidered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
\nregarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
\nupon the health and welfare of the dog and its ability to perform its<\/span>
\ntraditional work.<\/span>
\nDISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Dogs, which clearly show physical or behavioural abnormalities,<\/span>
\nshall be disqualified. <\/span>
\n\u2022 Converging headlines.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Muzzle longer than the skull.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Untypically short muzzle.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Undershot or overshot, wry mouth.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Blue eyes.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Totally un-pigmented nose, eyelids or lip rims.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Body length shorter the height at the withers.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Short legged, longish dog of achondroplasic type.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Tail carried in a ring or a laterally curved tail.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Coat on the body longer than 5 cm.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Completely solid coloured dog, lacking the white markings.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Traces of greyish or black colour on the body, sign of a third<\/span>
\ncolour.<\/span>
\n\u2022 White markings which are mottled with the basic colour.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Height above or below the parameters designated in the standard.<\/span>
\nN.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
\ndescended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span>
\nconformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
