He was believed to be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a tax collector, offal abattoir manager (knacker) and a part time dog<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">catcher, legally able to catch all stray dogs. He bred with animals<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from this reservoir that were particularly sharp. The so called<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cbutcher\u2019s dogs\u201d which were already considered a relatively pure<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">breed at that time, played a most important role in the origination of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the Dobermann breed. These dogs were an early type of Rottweiler,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">mixed with a type of shepherd dog that existed in \u201cTh\u00fcringen\u201d as a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">black dog with rust red markings. Mr Dobermann bred with this<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">mixture of dogs in the Eighteen Seventies. Thus he obtained \u201chis<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">breed\u201d: not only alert, but highly protective working and housedogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They were often used as guard and police dogs. Their extensive use<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in police work led to the nickname \u201cGendarme dog\u201d. They were used<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in hunting to control large vermin. In these circumstances it was a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">matter of course that the Dobermann was recognized officially as a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Police Dog by the beginning of the 20th century. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Dobermann breed requires a medium sized, powerful, muscular<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dog. Despite his substance he shall be elegant and noble, which will<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">be evident in his bodyline. He must be exceptionally suitable as a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">companion, protection and working dog and also as a family dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: The Dobermann is of medium size,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strong and muscularly built. Through the elegant lines of its body, its<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">proud stature, and its expression of determination, it conforms to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ideal picture of dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS:<\/strong> The body of the Dobermann<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">appears to be almost square, particularly in males. The length of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">body measured from the tip of breast to the point of the buttock shall<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">not be more than 5% longer than the height from the withers to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ground in males, and 10% in females.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: The disposition of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dobermann is friendly and calm; very devoted to the family.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Medium temperament and medium sharpness (alertness) is desired.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A medium threshold of irritation is required with a good contact to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the owner. Easy to train, the Dobermann enjoys working, and shall<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">have good working ability, courage and hardness. The particular<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">values of self-confidence and intrepidness are required, and also<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">adaptability and attention to fit the social environment.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HEAD<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION: Strong and in proportion to the body. Seen<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from the top the head is shaped in the form of a blunt wedge. Viewed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">form the front the crown line shall be almost level and not dropping<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">off to the ears. The muzzle line extends almost straight to the top line<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the skull that falls, gently rounded, into the neckline. The <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">superciliary ridge is well developed without protruding. The <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">forehead furrow is still visible. The occiput shall not be conspicuous.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Seen from the front and the top the sides of the head must not bulge.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The slight bulge between the rear of the upper jawbone and the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">cheekbone shall be in harmony with the total length of the head. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">head muscles shall be well developed. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Shall be slight but visibly developed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: Nostrils well developed, more broad than round, with large<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">openings without overall protrusion. Black \u2013 in black dogs; in brown<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dogs, corresponding lighter shades.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: The muzzle must be in the right proportion with the upper<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">head and must be strongly developed. The muzzle shall have depth.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The mouth opening shall be wide, reaching to the molars. A good<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">muzzle width must also be present on the upper and lower incisor<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">area.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: They shall be tight and lie close to the jaw that will ensure a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tight closure of the mouth. The pigment of the gum to be dark; in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brown dogs a corresponding lighter shade.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth: Powerful broad upper and lower jaw, scissor bite, 42<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">teeth correctly placed and normal size.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes: Medium sized, oval and dark in colour. Lighter shades are<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">permitted for brown dogs. Close lying eyelids. Eyelids shall be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">covered with hair.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears: The ears, are left natural and of an appropriate size; they<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">are set on either side at the highest point of the skull and are<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ideally lying close to the cheeks.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: The neck must have a good length and be in proportion to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the body and the head. It is dry and muscular. Its outline rises<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">gradually and is softly curved. Its carriage is upright and shows much<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nobility.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers: Shall be pronounced in height and length, especially in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">males and thereby determine the slope of the topline from the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">withers to the croup.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back: Short and firm, of good width and well muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Loin: Of good width and well muscled. The female can be slightly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">longer in loin because of the required space for suckling offspring.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: It shall fall slightly, hardly perceptible from sacrum to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">root of the tail, and appears well rounded, being neither straight nor<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">noticeably sloping, of good width and well muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest: Length and depth of chest must be in the right proportion to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the body length. The depth with slightly arched ribs should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">approximately 50% the height of the dog at the withers. The chest<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">has got a good width with especially well developed forechest.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Underline and belly: From the bottom of the breastbone to the pelvis<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the underline is noticeably tucked up.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">TAIL: The tail is left natural and is ideally carried high in a<\/span><\/strong><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slight curve.<\/span><\/strong><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: The front legs as seen from all sides are almost<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">straight, vertical to the ground and strongly developed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulder: The shoulder-blade lies close against the chest, and both<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sides of the shoulder-blade edge are well muscled and reach over the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">top of the thoracic vertebra, slanting as much as possible and well set<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">back. The angle to the horizontal is approximately 50\u00b0.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm: Good length, well muscled.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbow: Close in, not turned out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm: Strong and straight. Well muscled. Length in harmony with<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the whole body.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carpus (Wrist): Strong.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metacarpus (Pastern): Bones strong. Straight seen from the front.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Seen from the side, only slightly sloping.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet: The feet are short and tight. The toes are arched towards<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the top (cat like). Nails short black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: Seen from the rear the Dobermann looks,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">because of his well-developed pelvic muscles in hips and croup,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">wide and rounded off. The muscles running from the pelvic towards<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the thigh and lower thigh result in good width development, as well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">as in the thigh area, in the knee joint area and at the lower thigh. The<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">strong hind legs are straight and stand parallel. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh: Good length and width, well muscled. Good angulation to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hip joint. Angulation to the horizontal approximately between 80\u00b0\u2013<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">85\u00b0.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle (Knee): The knee joint is strong and is formed by the thigh and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lower thigh as well as the kneecap.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh: Medium length and in harmony with the total length of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the hindquarter.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock joint: Medium strength and parallel. The lower thigh is joined<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to the metatarsal at the hock joint.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus (Rear pastern): It is short and stands vertical to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ground.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet: Like the forefeet, the toes of the hind feet are short, arched<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and closed. Nails short, black.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: The gait is of special importance to both the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">working ability as well as the exterior appearance. The gait is elastic,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">elegant, agile, free and ground covering. The forelegs reach out as far<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">as possible. The hindquarter gives far-reaching and necessary elastic<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">drive. The foreleg of one side and the hind leg of the other side move<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">forward at the same time. There should be good stability of the back,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the ligaments and the joints.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong>: The skin fits closely all over and have good pigmentation.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">COAT<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: The hair is short, hard and dense. It lies tight and smooth and is<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">equally distributed over the whole surface. Undercoat is not allowed.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour:<strong> The Dobermann is bred in two colour varieties: black or<\/strong><\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brown with rust red, clearly defined and clear markings (tan<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>markings).<\/strong> Tan markings are on the muzzle as a spot on the cheeks<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the top of the eyebrow; on the throat; two spots on the forechest;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">on the metacarpus, metatarsus and feet; on the inner side of the hind<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">thigh; on the forearms and under the tail. <\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SIZE AND WEIGHT:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers: Males: 68 \u2013 72 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: 63 \u2013 68 cm.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Medium size desirable.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight: Males: about 40 \u2013 45 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females: about 32 \u2013 35 kg.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">upon the health and welfare of the dog and its ability to perform its<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">traditional work.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Lack of sexual dimorphism; little substance; too light; too heavy;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">too leggy; weak bones.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Head too heavy, too narrow, too short, too long, too much or too<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">little stop; Rams nose, bad slope of the top line of the skull; weak<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lower jaw; round or slit eyes; light eye; cheeks too heavy; loose<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">flews; eyes too open or too deep set; ear set too high or too low;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">open mouth angle.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Back not straight; sway back; roach back; insufficient depth<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">or width of chest; tail set too low; sloping croup; too little or too<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">much tuck up.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Too little angulation in forequarters; hindquarters with too little<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">or too much angulation; loose elbow; feet too close together or<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">too wide apart; cow-hocks, spread hocks; open or soft paws,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">crooked toes; pale nails.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tan-markings too light or not sharply defined; smudged markings;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">mask too dark; big black spot on the legs; chest markings hardly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">visible or too large; hair long, soft, curly or dull. Thin coat; bald<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">patches.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Deviation of size up to 2 cm from the standard should result in a<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lowering of the quality grading.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Gait that is not harmonious, in particular pacing. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>DISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical of behavioural abnormalities<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shall be disqualified.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Yellow eyes (bird of prey eye); different coloured eyes.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Overshot; level bite; undershot; missing teeth according to the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">formula.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 White spots. Visible undercoat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Dogs which deviate more than 2 cm over or under the standard.<\/span><br \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">N.B.:<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">descended into the scrotum.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">conformation
