\nBRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong>: It is popularly thought that<\/span>
\nthe Labrador Retriever originated on the coast of Newfoundland<\/span>
\nwhere fishermen were seen to use a dog of similar appearance to<\/span>
\nretrieve fish. An excellent water dog, his weather-resistant coat and<\/span>
\nunique tail, likened to that of an otter because of its shape,<\/span>
\nemphasise this trait.<\/span>
\nComparatively speaking, the Labrador is not a very old breed, its<\/span>
\nbreed club having been formed in 1916 and the Yellow Labrador<\/span>
\nClub having been founded in 1925. It was in field trialling that the<\/span>
\nLabrador found early fame, having been originally introduced to<\/span>
\nthese shores in the late 1800s by Col Peter Hawker and the Earl of<\/span>
\nMalmesbury. It was a dog called Malmesbury Tramp which was<\/span>
\ndescribed by Lorna, Countess Howe as one of the \u2018tap roots\u2019 of the<\/span>
\nmodern Labrador.<\/span>
\nGENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: Strongly built, short-coupled, very<\/span>
\nactive; (which precludes excessive body weight or substance)<\/span>
\nbroad in skull; broad and deep through chest and ribs; broad and<\/span>
\nstrong over loins and hindquarters.<\/span>
\nBEHAVIOUR AND TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Good-tempered, very<\/span>
\nagile. Excellent nose, soft mouth; keen lover of water. Adaptable,<\/span>
\ndevoted companion.<\/span>
\nIntelligent, keen and biddable, with a strong will to please. Kindly<\/span>
\nnature, with no trace of aggression or undue shyness. <\/span>
\nHEAD<\/span><\/strong>
\nCRANIAL REGION:<\/span>
\nSkull: Broad. Clean-cut without fleshy cheeks.<\/span>
\nStop: Defined.<\/span>
\nFACIAL REGION:<\/span>
\nNose: Wide, nostrils well developed.<\/span>
\nMuzzle: Powerful, not snipy.<\/span>
\nJaws \/ Teeth: Jaws of medium length, jaws and teeth strong with a<\/span>
\nperfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely<\/span>
\noverlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.<\/span>
\nEyes: Medium size, expressing intelligence and good temper; brown<\/span>
\nor hazel.<\/span>
\nEars: Not large or heavy, hanging close to head and set rather far<\/span>
\nback.<\/span><\/p>\n

NECK<\/strong>: Clean, strong, powerful, set into well placed shoulders.<\/span>
\nBODY<\/strong>:<\/span>
\nTopline: Level.<\/span>
\nLoin: Wide, short-coupled and strong.<\/span>
\nChest: Of good width and depth, with well sprung barrel ribs \u2013 this<\/span>
\neffect not to be produced by carrying excessive weight.<\/span>
\nTAIL<\/strong>: Distinctive feature, very thick towards base, gradually<\/span>
\ntapering towards tip, medium length, free from feathering, but<\/span>
\nclothed thickly all round with short, thick, dense coat, thus giving<\/span>
\n\u201crounded\u201d appearance described as \u201cOtter\u201d tail. May be carried<\/span>
\ngaily, but should not curl over back.<\/span>
\nLIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
\nFOREQUARTERS:<\/span>
\nGeneral appearance: Forelegs straight from elbow to ground when<\/span>
\nviewed from either front or side.<\/span>
\nShoulder: Long and sloping. <\/span>
\nForearm: Forelegs well boned and straight.<\/span>
\nForefeet: Round, compact; well-arched toes and well developed<\/span>
\npads.<\/span>
\nHINDQUARTERS:<\/span>
\nGeneral appearance: Well developed hindquarters, not sloping to<\/span>
\ntail.<\/span>
\nStifle (Knee): Well turned.<\/span>
\nMetatarsus (Rear pastern): Hocks well let down. Cowhocks highly<\/span>
\nundesirable.<\/span>
\nHind feet: Round, compact; well-arched toes and well developed<\/span>
\npads.<\/span>
\nGAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Free, covering adequate ground; straight<\/span>
\nand true in front and rear.<\/span>
\nCOAT<\/span><\/strong>
\nHair: Distinctive feature, short, dense, without wave or feathering,<\/span>
\ngiving fairly hard feel to the touch; weather-resistant undercoat.<\/span>
\nColour: Wholly black, yellow or liver\/chocolate. Yellows range<\/span>
\nfrom light cream to red fox. Small white spot on chest permissible.<\/span>
\nSIZE<\/strong>:<\/span>
\nIdeal height at the withers: Males: 56 \u2013 57 cms.<\/span>
\nFemales: 54 \u2013 56 cms.<\/span>
\nFAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
\nconsidered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
\nregarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
\nupon the health and welfare of the dog and on its ability to perform<\/span>
\nits traditional work.<\/span>
\nDISQUALIFYING FAULTS<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural<\/span>
\nabnormalities shall be disqualified. <\/span>
\nN.B<\/strong>.:<\/span>
\n\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles<\/span>
\nfully descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed<\/span>
\ntypical conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
