The ancestors of this little dog lived in the ports and maritime<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">cities of central Mediterranean, where they hunted mice and rats that<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">were found in profusion in the harbours\u2019 warehouses and in the hold<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">of ships. In a list of dogs existing at the time of Aristotle (384\u2013322<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">B.C.) is mentioned a breed of little dogs to which is attributed the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Latin name \u00ab canes melitenses \u00bb. That dog was known in Ancient<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rome: favourite companion of the matrons, and praised by Strabon,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Latin poet of the first century A.D. Covered<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">by a very long white coat, very elegant with a proud and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">distinguished head carriage. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: Length of body exceeds by about<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">1\/3 the height at the withers. The length of the head is equal to 6\/11<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the height at withers. The circumference of the chest is 2\/3 more<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">than the height at the withers. Length of muzzle is equal to 4\/11 of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">the length of the head; it is therefore slightly less than it\u2019s half.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle depth is a good 20% less than its length. Tail length<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">corresponds to about 60% of the height at the withers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Lively, affectionate, very calm<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and very intelligent.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>HEAD:<\/strong> Rather broad, exceeding slightly at the half of the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">headlength.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRANIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Skull: The skull is slightly longer than the muzzle; the bizygomatic<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">width is equal to its length. In the sagittal direction, it is very slightly<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">egg-shaped (ovoid), the upper part of the skull is flat with the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">occipital crest only slightly marked. The protuberance of the frontal<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">bone and the supraorbital ridge are well developed; the frontal<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">indentation of the furrow is very little or not marked, the lateral faces<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the parietal bones are somewhat convex.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stop: Fronto-nasal depression strongly defined making an angle of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">90\u00b0.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">FACIAL REGION:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nose: In the prolongation of the nasal bridge, seen in profile, the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">forepart is vertical. Voluminous with open nostrils, rounded and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">absolutely black.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muzzle: Length of muzzle is slightly less than half the length of the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">head. The suborbital region is well chiselled. The depth is much less<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">than the length. The sides of the muzzle are parallel, but the muzzle<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">seen from the front, must not appear square, since its anterior joins<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">the lateral sides by curves. The muzzle is rectilinear with a wellmarked furrow in its centre part.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lips: Viewed from the front, the upper lips at their junction have the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">shape of a very open arch. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">They are slightly developed in depth and the labial commissure is not<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">visible. The upper lips adapt perfectly to the lower lips in such a way<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">that the lower profile of the muzzle is defined by the lower jaw. The<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">edges of the lips must be absolutely black.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jaws\/Teeth: Normally developed and light in appearance, perfectly<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">adapted. The lower jaw, with its branches being straight, is neither<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">prominent nor receding in its anterior part. The dental arches are<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">perfectly adapted and the incisors in scissor articulation. Teeth are<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">white and the dentition is well developed and complete.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eyes: Lively and attentive expression, larger in size than would be<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">expected, the shape tends to be rounded. The eyelids are in close<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">contact with the eyeball, which is never deep-set, but rather level<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">with the head, just slightly protruding. The eyes are set on a same<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">almost frontal plane. Seen from the front: eyes must not show sclera<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">(white of the eyes); they are of a dark ochre colour; eye rims and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">third eye lid are black.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ears: Almost triangular in shape, the width is about 1\/3 of the length.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">They are set high above the zygomatic arch, hanging close to the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">sides of the skull, with little erection.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>NECK<\/strong>: Although covered with an abundant coat, the demarcation of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">the nape of the neck is evident. The upper profile is arched. Length<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">of neck is about half of the height at the withers. Neck is carried<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">erect and does not show any loose skin.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BODY<\/strong>: The length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">buttock is 1\/3 more than the height at the withers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Top line: Straight to the tail-set.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Withers: Slightly above the topline.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Back: Length is superior to half the height at the withers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Croup: In the prolongation of the lumbar-dorsal line, the croup is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">very broad and long, the obliqueness is 10\u00b0 below the horizontal.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chest: Ample, deep, well developed, let down below the elbows with<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">ribs not too sprung. The sternal region is very long. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAIL<\/strong>: Set on level with the croup, thick at the root and fine at the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">tip. Forms a single big curve, the tip of which falls between the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">haunches touching the croup. A tail curved to one side of the body is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">tolerated.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">FOREQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: On the whole legs are close to the body,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">standing straight and parallel.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shoulder: The length represents 1\/3 of the height of the withers, with<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">top of shoulders wide apart and well laid back.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Upper arm: Longer than the shoulder blade, of good angulation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Elbow: Neither turned in nor out.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forearm: Lean with few visible muscles, but with a rather sturdy<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">bone structure in relation to the size of the breed.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carpus (wrist): In the vertical line of the forearm, mobile. Should<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">not be knotty. Covered with fine skin.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metacarpus (Pastern): Has the same characteristics as the carpus and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">because of its short length is vertical.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forefeet: Round, toes closed and arched; pads should be black, the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">nails should also be black or at least of a dark colour.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">HINDQUARTERS:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">General appearance: Sturdy bone structure. Parallel legs seen from<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">behind, vertical from the point of the buttock to the ground.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thigh: Hard muscled, hind edge is convex. Its downward and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">forward direction is somewhat oblique in relation to the vertical.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stifle (knee): The articulation is free, neither turned in nor out.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lower thigh: With a groove between the tendon and the bone that is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">barely noticeable. The obliqueness below the horizontal is 55\u00b0. It is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">slightly longer than the thigh.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hock joint: The forward angulation of the hock is 140\u00b0.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Metatarsus (Rear pastern): The distance from the ground to the point<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the hock is slightly more than 1\/3 of the height at the withers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pasterns fairly low set and perfectly upright. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hind feet: Round, toes closed and arched; pads should be black, the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">nails should also be black or at least of a dark colour.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Even, skimming the ground, free, with short<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and very quick steps at the trot.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SKIN<\/strong>: Really tight to all parts of the body, pigmented with dark<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">patches and patches of a reddish wine colour, especially on the back.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>COAT<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hair: Dense, shiny, glossy &#8211; falling heavily and of a silky texture,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">very long on the whole of the body and straight throughout its length<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">without traces of waves or curls. On the trunk it should be longer<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">than the height at the withers and fall heavily back to the ground like<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">a cape fitting close to the trunk without opening or forming tufts or<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">flocks. Tufts or flocks are acceptable on the forequarters from the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">elbow to the foot, and on the hindquarters, from the stifle to the foot.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is no undercoat. On the head the coat is very long, -also on the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">foreface, where it mingles with the beard and also on the skull where<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">it falls eventually mingling with the hair covering the ears. On the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">tail, the hairs fall back to one side of the body, i.e. on the flank and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">on the thigh, of such length as to reach the hock.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colour: Pure white, a pale ivory tinge is permitted. Traces of pale<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">orange shades are tolerated but not desirable and constitute an<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">imperfection.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SIZE AND WEIGHT:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Height at the withers: Males from 21\u201325 cm.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Females from 20\u201323 cm.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weight: 3\u20134 kg.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">upon the health and welfare of the dog. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Bilateral strabismus (cross-eyed).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Overlong in body.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SEVERE FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Roman nose.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Accentuated undershot mouth.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Size in males over 26 cm or below 19 cm. Size in females over<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">25 cm or below 18 cm.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">shall be disqualified.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Accentuated divergence or convergence of the head planes.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Total depigmentation of the nose or nose of other colour than<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">black.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Overshot mouth.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Wall eye.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Total depigmentation of the eyelids.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Tail-less, shortened tail, whether congenital or acquired.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Frizzy coat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Any colour other than white, with exception of pale ivory.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Patches of different colours whatever their extension.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>N.B.<\/strong>:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">descended into the scrotum.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs,
