\nBRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY:<\/strong> The name Maltese does not<\/span>
\nsignify that the breed originates from the island of Malta, because the<\/span>
\nadjective \u00ab Maltese \u00bb comes from the Semitic word \u00ab m\u00e0lat \u00bb which<\/span>
\nmeans refuge or harbour; this Semitic root comes up again in a whole<\/span>
\nseries of names of maritime places; i.e. in the name Adriatic island of<\/span>
\nM\u00e9l\u00e9da, the Sicilian town of Melita and also in that of the island<\/span>
\nMalta. The ancestors of this little dog lived in the ports and maritime<\/span>
\ncities of central Mediterranean, where they hunted mice and rats that<\/span>
\nwere found in profusion in the harbours\u2019 warehouses and in the hold<\/span>
\nof ships. In a list of dogs existing at the time of Aristotle (384\u2013322<\/span>
\nB.C.) is mentioned a breed of little dogs to which is attributed the<\/span>
\nLatin name \u00ab canes melitenses \u00bb. That dog was known in Ancient<\/span>
\nRome: favourite companion of the matrons, and praised by Strabon,<\/span>
\nLatin poet of the first century A.D. Representations of the Maltese by<\/span>
\nnumerous Renaissance painters show this little dog in the salons of<\/span>
\nthe period at the side of beautiful ladies of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong>: Of small size, longish body. Covered<\/span>
\nby a very long white coat, very elegant with a proud and<\/span>
\ndistinguished head carriage. <\/span>
\nIMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong>: Length of body exceeds by about<\/span>
\n1\/3 the height at the withers. The length of the head is equal to 6\/11<\/span>
\nof the height at withers. The circumference of the chest is 2\/3 more<\/span>
\nthan the height at the withers. Length of muzzle is equal to 4\/11 of<\/span>
\nthe length of the head; it is therefore slightly less than it\u2019s half.<\/span>
\nMuzzle depth is a good 20% less than its length. Tail length<\/span>
\ncorresponds to about 60% of the height at the withers.<\/span>
\nBEHAVIOUR\/TEMPERAMENT<\/strong>: Lively, affectionate, very calm<\/span>
\nand very intelligent.<\/span>
\nHEAD:<\/strong> Rather broad, exceeding slightly at the half of the<\/span>
\nheadlength.<\/span>
\nCRANIAL REGION:<\/span>
\nSkull: The skull is slightly longer than the muzzle; the bizygomatic<\/span>
\nwidth is equal to its length. In the sagittal direction, it is very slightly<\/span>
\negg-shaped (ovoid), the upper part of the skull is flat with the<\/span>
\noccipital crest only slightly marked. The protuberance of the frontal<\/span>
\nbone and the supraorbital ridge are well developed; the frontal<\/span>
\nindentation of the furrow is very little or not marked, the lateral faces<\/span>
\nof the parietal bones are somewhat convex.<\/span>
\nStop: Fronto-nasal depression strongly defined making an angle of<\/span>
\n90\u00b0.<\/span>
\nFACIAL REGION:<\/span>
\nNose: In the prolongation of the nasal bridge, seen in profile, the<\/span>
\nforepart is vertical. Voluminous with open nostrils, rounded and<\/span>
\nabsolutely black.<\/span>
\nMuzzle: Length of muzzle is slightly less than half the length of the<\/span>
\nhead. The suborbital region is well chiselled. The depth is much less<\/span>
\nthan the length. The sides of the muzzle are parallel, but the muzzle<\/span>
\nseen from the front, must not appear square, since its anterior joins<\/span>
\nthe lateral sides by curves. The muzzle is rectilinear with a wellmarked furrow in its centre part.<\/span>
\nLips: Viewed from the front, the upper lips at their junction have the<\/span>
\nshape of a very open arch. <\/span>
\nThey are slightly developed in depth and the labial commissure is not<\/span>
\nvisible. The upper lips adapt perfectly to the lower lips in such a way<\/span>
\nthat the lower profile of the muzzle is defined by the lower jaw. The<\/span>
\nedges of the lips must be absolutely black.<\/span>
\nJaws\/Teeth: Normally developed and light in appearance, perfectly<\/span>
\nadapted. The lower jaw, with its branches being straight, is neither<\/span>
\nprominent nor receding in its anterior part. The dental arches are<\/span>
\nperfectly adapted and the incisors in scissor articulation. Teeth are<\/span>
\nwhite and the dentition is well developed and complete.<\/span>
\nEyes: Lively and attentive expression, larger in size than would be<\/span>
\nexpected, the shape tends to be rounded. The eyelids are in close<\/span>
\ncontact with the eyeball, which is never deep-set, but rather level<\/span>
\nwith the head, just slightly protruding. The eyes are set on a same<\/span>
\nalmost frontal plane. Seen from the front: eyes must not show sclera<\/span>
\n(white of the eyes); they are of a dark ochre colour; eye rims and<\/span>
\nthird eye lid are black.<\/span>
\nEars: Almost triangular in shape, the width is about 1\/3 of the length.<\/span>
\nThey are set high above the zygomatic arch, hanging close to the<\/span>
\nsides of the skull, with little erection.<\/span>
\nNECK<\/strong>: Although covered with an abundant coat, the demarcation of<\/span>
\nthe nape of the neck is evident. The upper profile is arched. Length<\/span>
\nof neck is about half of the height at the withers. Neck is carried<\/span>
\nerect and does not show any loose skin.<\/span>
\nBODY<\/strong>: The length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the<\/span>
\nbuttock is 1\/3 more than the height at the withers.<\/span>
\nTop line: Straight to the tail-set.<\/span>
\nWithers: Slightly above the topline.<\/span>
\nBack: Length is superior to half the height at the withers.<\/span>
\nCroup: In the prolongation of the lumbar-dorsal line, the croup is<\/span>
\nvery broad and long, the obliqueness is 10\u00b0 below the horizontal.<\/span>
\nChest: Ample, deep, well developed, let down below the elbows with<\/span>
\nribs not too sprung. The sternal region is very long. <\/span>
\nTAIL<\/strong>: Set on level with the croup, thick at the root and fine at the<\/span>
\ntip. Forms a single big curve, the tip of which falls between the<\/span>
\nhaunches touching the croup. A tail curved to one side of the body is<\/span>
\ntolerated.<\/span>
\nLIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
\nFOREQUARTERS:<\/span>
\nGeneral appearance: On the whole legs are close to the body,<\/span>
\nstanding straight and parallel.<\/span>
\nShoulder: The length represents 1\/3 of the height of the withers, with<\/span>
\ntop of shoulders wide apart and well laid back.<\/span>
\nUpper arm: Longer than the shoulder blade, of good angulation.<\/span>
\nElbow: Neither turned in nor out.<\/span>
\nForearm: Lean with few visible muscles, but with a rather sturdy<\/span>
\nbone structure in relation to the size of the breed.<\/span>
\nCarpus (wrist): In the vertical line of the forearm, mobile. Should<\/span>
\nnot be knotty. Covered with fine skin.<\/span>
\nMetacarpus (Pastern): Has the same characteristics as the carpus and<\/span>
\nbecause of its short length is vertical.<\/span>
\nForefeet: Round, toes closed and arched; pads should be black, the<\/span>
\nnails should also be black or at least of a dark colour.<\/span>
\nHINDQUARTERS:<\/span>
\nGeneral appearance: Sturdy bone structure. Parallel legs seen from<\/span>
\nbehind, vertical from the point of the buttock to the ground.<\/span>
\nThigh: Hard muscled, hind edge is convex. Its downward and<\/span>
\nforward direction is somewhat oblique in relation to the vertical.<\/span>
\nStifle (knee): The articulation is free, neither turned in nor out.<\/span>
\nLower thigh: With a groove between the tendon and the bone that is<\/span>
\nbarely noticeable. The obliqueness below the horizontal is 55\u00b0. It is<\/span>
\nslightly longer than the thigh.<\/span>
\nHock joint: The forward angulation of the hock is 140\u00b0.<\/span>
\nMetatarsus (Rear pastern): The distance from the ground to the point<\/span>
\nof the hock is slightly more than 1\/3 of the height at the withers.<\/span>
\nPasterns fairly low set and perfectly upright. <\/span>
\nHind feet: Round, toes closed and arched; pads should be black, the<\/span>
\nnails should also be black or at least of a dark colour.<\/span>
\nGAIT\/MOVEMENT<\/strong>: Even, skimming the ground, free, with short<\/span>
\nand very quick steps at the trot.<\/span>
\nSKIN<\/strong>: Really tight to all parts of the body, pigmented with dark<\/span>
\npatches and patches of a reddish wine colour, especially on the back.<\/span>
\nCOAT<\/strong>:<\/span>
\nHair: Dense, shiny, glossy – falling heavily and of a silky texture,<\/span>
\nvery long on the whole of the body and straight throughout its length<\/span>
\nwithout traces of waves or curls. On the trunk it should be longer<\/span>
\nthan the height at the withers and fall heavily back to the ground like<\/span>
\na cape fitting close to the trunk without opening or forming tufts or<\/span>
\nflocks. Tufts or flocks are acceptable on the forequarters from the<\/span>
\nelbow to the foot, and on the hindquarters, from the stifle to the foot.<\/span>
\nThere is no undercoat. On the head the coat is very long, -also on the<\/span>
\nforeface, where it mingles with the beard and also on the skull where<\/span>
\nit falls eventually mingling with the hair covering the ears. On the<\/span>
\ntail, the hairs fall back to one side of the body, i.e. on the flank and<\/span>
\non the thigh, of such length as to reach the hock.<\/span>
\nColour: Pure white, a pale ivory tinge is permitted. Traces of pale<\/span>
\norange shades are tolerated but not desirable and constitute an<\/span>
\nimperfection.<\/span>
\nSIZE AND WEIGHT:<\/span><\/strong>
\nHeight at the withers: Males from 21\u201325 cm.<\/span>
\nFemales from 20\u201323 cm.<\/span>
\nWeight: 3\u20134 kg.<\/span>
\nFAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
\nconsidered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
\nregarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
\nupon the health and welfare of the dog. <\/span>
\n\u2022 Bilateral strabismus (cross-eyed).<\/span>
\n\u2022 Overlong in body.<\/span>
\nSEVERE FAULTS<\/strong>:<\/span>
\n\u2022 Roman nose.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Accentuated undershot mouth.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Size in males over 26 cm or below 19 cm. Size in females over<\/span>
\n25 cm or below 18 cm.<\/span>
\nDISQUALIFYING FAULTS:<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities<\/span>
\nshall be disqualified.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Accentuated divergence or convergence of the head planes.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Total depigmentation of the nose or nose of other colour than<\/span>
\nblack.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Overshot mouth.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Wall eye.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Total depigmentation of the eyelids.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Tail-less, shortened tail, whether congenital or acquired.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Frizzy coat.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Any colour other than white, with exception of pale ivory.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Patches of different colours whatever their extension.<\/span>
\nN.B.<\/strong>:<\/span>
\n\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span>
\ndescended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical<\/span>
\nconformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
