\nBRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY:<\/strong> The name Samoyed derives<\/span>
\nfrom the Samoyed Tribes in Northern Russia and Siberia. In<\/span>
\nSouthern parts of the area they used white, black and brown particoloured dogs as reindeer herders; in the northern parts the dogs<\/span>
\nwere pure white, had a mild temperament and were used as huntingand sledge dogs. The Samoyed dogs lived close to their owners, they<\/span>
\neven slept within the shelters and were used as heaters. The British<\/span>
\nzoologist Ernest Kilburn Scott spent three months among Samoyed<\/span>
\nTribes in 1889. Returning to England he brought with him a brown<\/span>
\nmale puppy called \u00ab Sabarka \u00bb. Later he imported a cream coloured<\/span>
\nbitch called \u00ab Whitey Petchora \u00bb from the western side of the Urals<\/span>
\nand a snow white male called \u00ab Musti \u00bb from Siberia. These few<\/span>
\ndogs and those brought by the explorers are the base for the western<\/span>
\nSamoyed. The first standard was written in England in 1909.<\/span>
\nGENERAL APPEARANCE:<\/strong> Medium in size, elegant, a white<\/span>
\nArctic Spitz. In appearance gives the impression of power,<\/span>
\nendurance, charm, suppleness, dignity and self-confidence.<\/span>
\nThe expression, the so called \u00ab Samoyed Smile \u00bb, is made up of a<\/span>
\ncombination of eye shape and position, and the slightly curved up<\/span>
\ncorners of the mouth. The sex should be clearly stamped. <\/span>
\nIMPORTANT PROPORTIONS:<\/strong> The length of the body is<\/span>
\napproximately 5% more than the height at the withers. The depth of<\/span>
\nthe body is slightly less than the half of the height at the withers.<\/span>
\nThe muzzle is approximately as long as the skull.<\/span>
\nBEHAVIOUR AND TEMPERAMENT:<\/strong> Friendly, open, alert and<\/span>
\nlively. The hunting instinct is very slight. Never shy nor aggressive.<\/span>
\nVery social and cannot be used as guard dog.<\/span>
\nHEAD:<\/strong> Powerful and wedge-shaped.<\/span>
\nCRANIAL REGION:<\/span><\/strong>
\nSkull: viewed from the front and in profile only slightly convex.<\/span>
\nBroadest between the ears. Slightly visible furrow between the eyes.<\/span>
\nStop: Clearly defined but not too prominent.<\/span>
\nFACIAL REGION:<\/span><\/strong>
\nNose: Well developed, preferably black. During some periods of the<\/span>
\nyear the pigment of the nose can fade to a so called \u00ab winter nose \u00bb;<\/span>
\nthere must however always be dark pigment at the edges of the nose.<\/span>
\nMuzzle: Strong and deep, approximately as long as the skull,<\/span>
\ngradually tapering towards the nose, neither snipey nor heavy and<\/span>
\nsquare. The bridge of the nose is straight.<\/span>
\nLips: Close fitting, black and rather full. The corners of the mouth<\/span>
\nare slightly curved forming the characteristic \u00ab Samoyed Smile \u00bb.<\/span>
\nJaws\/Teeth: Regular and complete scissor bite. The teeth and the<\/span>
\njaws are strong. Normal dentition.<\/span>
\nEYES:<\/strong> Dark brown in colour, well-set in the sockets, placed rather<\/span>
\napart, somewhat slanting and almond-shaped. The expression is<\/span>
\n\u00ab smiling \u00bb, kind, alert and intelligent. The eyerims are black.<\/span>
\nEARS:<\/strong> Erect, rather small, thick, triangular and slightly rounded at<\/span>
\nthe tips. They should be mobile, set high; due to the broad skull well<\/span>
\napart. <\/span>
\nNECK:<\/strong> Strong and of medium length with a proud carriage.<\/span>
\nBODY:<\/strong> Slightly longer than the height at the withers, deep and<\/span>
\ncompact but supple.<\/span>
\nWithers: Clearly defined.<\/span>
\nBack: Of medium length, muscular and straight; in females slightly<\/span>
\nlonger than in males.<\/span>
\nLoin: Short, very strong and defined.<\/span>
\nCroup: Full, strong, muscular and slightly sloping.<\/span>
\nChest: Broad, deep and long, reaching almost to the elbows. The<\/span>
\nribs are well sprung.<\/span>
\nUnderline: Moderate tuck-up.<\/span>
\nTAIL<\/strong>: Set rather high. When the dog is alert and in motion the tail<\/span>
\nis carried bent from the root forward over the back or side, but may<\/span>
\nbe hanging at rest, then reaching to the hocks.<\/span>
\nLIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
\nFOREQUARTERS:<\/span>
\nGeneral appearance: Well placed and muscular with strong bones.<\/span>
\nViewed from the front straight and parallel.<\/span>
\nShoulder: Long, firm and sloping.<\/span>
\nUpper arm: Oblique and close to the body. Approximately as long<\/span>
\nas the shoulder.<\/span>
\nElbow: Close to the body.<\/span>
\nCarpus: Strong but supple.<\/span>
\nMetacarpus (Pastern): Slightly oblique.<\/span>
\nFore Feet: Oval with long toes, flexible and pointing straight<\/span>
\nforward. Toes arched and not too tightly knit. Elastics pads.<\/span>
\nHINDQUARTERS:<\/span>
\nGeneral appearance: Viewed from behind straight and parallel with<\/span>
\nvery strong muscles.<\/span>
\nUpper thigh: Of medium length, rather broad and muscular.<\/span>
\nStifle: Well angulated.<\/span>
\nHocks: Rather low and well angulated. <\/span>
\nMetatarsus: Short, strong, vertical and parallel.<\/span>
\nHindfeet: As front feet. The dewclaws should be removed (except in<\/span>
\ncountries where it is forbidden by law).<\/span>
\nGAIT<\/strong>: Powerful, free and tireless in appearance with long stride.<\/span>
\nGood reach in the forequarters and good driving power in the<\/span>
\nhindquarters.<\/span>
\nCOAT<\/span><\/strong>
\nHair: Profuse, thick, flexible and dense polar coat. The Samoyed is a<\/span>
\ndouble coated dog with short, soft and dense undercoat and longer,<\/span>
\nmore harsh and straight outer coat. The coat should form a ruff<\/span>
\naround the neck and shoulders framing the head, especially in males.<\/span>
\nOn head and on front of legs, hair is short and smooth; on outside of<\/span>
\nears short, standing off and smooth. Inside the ears should be well<\/span>
\nfurred. On back of the thighs the hair forms trousers. There should<\/span>
\nbe a protective growth of hair between the toes. The tail should be<\/span>
\nprofusely covered with hair. The coat of the female is often shorter<\/span>
\nand softer in texture than that of the male. The correct coat texture<\/span>
\nshould always have a special glistening sheen.<\/span>
\nColour: Pure white, cream or white with biscuit. (The basic colour to<\/span>
\nbe white with a few biscuit markings.) Should never give the<\/span>
\nimpression of being pale brown.<\/span>
\nSIZE<\/strong>:<\/span>
\nHeight at withers: Ideal height: male 57 cm with a tolerance of \u00b1 3<\/span>
\ncm and females 53 cm with a tolerance of \u00b1 3 cm.<\/span>
\nFAULTS<\/strong>: Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
\nconsidered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be<\/span>
\nregarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
\nupon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Visible faults in structure.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Light bone.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Males not masculine and females not feminine. <\/span>
\n\u2022 Pincer bite.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Yellow eyes.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Soft ears.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Barrel ribcage.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Double twisted tail.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Low on the legs.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Badly bow-legged or cow hocked.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Wavy or short coated throughout, long, soft or coat hanging<\/span>
\ndown.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Aloofness.<\/span>
\nSERIOUS FAULTS :<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Clearly unpigmented areas on eyerims or lips.<\/span>
\nELIMINATING FAULTS :<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy dogs.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural<\/span>
\nabnormalities.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Eyes blue or of different colours.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Overshot or undershot bite.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Ears not erect.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Coat colour other than permitted in the standard.<\/span>
\nN.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles<\/span>
\nfully descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed<\/span>
\ntypical conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span>
