BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/strong> : There is no written record <\/span>about the origin of the Korea Jindo Dog, but many authorities agree <\/span>that this breed has existed for several thousands of years in the <\/span>Island of Jindo, which is located at the South-West end of the Korean <\/span>peninsula. About the ancient origin, however, among different <\/span>theories, the main accepted is, that the Jindo Dog is indigenous to <\/span>Korea; the breed has been well preserved in this island due to the <\/span>transportation difficulties in those days. In Korea, Korea Jindo Dogs<\/span>
are called Jindo-kae or Jindo-kyon. Kae or Kyon are Korean words <\/span>for dog.<\/span>
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/strong> : The Korea Jindo Dog is a wellproportioned medium-sized dog used for hunting and guarding. With <\/span>erect ears and a rolled or sickle-shaped tail it should be a vivid <\/span>expression of agility, strength, alertness and dignity.<\/span>
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/strong> : Ratio between height at withers : <\/span>length of body = 10 : 10,5.<\/span>
BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/strong> : The Korea Jindo Dog has a <\/span>very strong instinct for hunting and is bold, brave, alert and careful, <\/span>not tempted easily and impetuous. But most of all he is extremely <\/span>faithful to his master.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the whole he is not fond of other animals, especially males. He <\/span>also has a good sense of direction. A one-man dog, he readily <\/span>accepts a new master, but never forgets his attachment towards the <\/span>former master who raised him from puppyhood. He keeps himself <\/span>clean and eats sparingly.<\/span>
HEAD<\/strong> : In general, the head forms a blunt triangle when viewed <\/span>from above and does not make the dog appear clumsy or coarse.<\/span>
CRANIAL REGION<\/strong> : The skull is of medium size in proportion to <\/span>the body. The top is slightly rounded and tapering down gradually to <\/span>the eyes.<\/span>
The width between the ears is moderate in proportion to the size of <\/span>the head.<\/span>
Stop : Well defined, but not too abrupt. There is a slight furrow <\/span>extending up towards forehead.<\/span>
FACIAL REGION :<\/span><\/strong>
Nose : Black. In case of white dog, flesh colour is permitted.<\/span>
Muzzle : The muzzle should not be bulky nor turned upward.<\/span>
Lips : Black, closing tightly, thin and not pendulous; upper lip <\/span>slightly covers the lower lip.<\/span>
Teeth : Very strong; scissors bite.<\/span>
Cheeks : Well developed, dry and moderately round when viewed <\/span>from side and front; narrowing to the end of the nose.<\/span>
Eyes : Dark brown in colour, rather small in proportion to the size <\/span>of the head, almond in shape and very lively; the outer corner of <\/span>both eyes is slanted towards the ears.<\/span>
Ears : Of medium size, triangular in shape, thick and perfectly erect; <\/span>ears, set neither high nor low, point slightly forward in line with the <\/span>back of the neck. Inside of ears, a fine and dense texture of coat is <\/span>desirable.<\/span><\/p>\n

NECK<\/strong> : Rather well-balanced and thick without dewlap, well<\/span>
muscled and strong. The Korea Jindo Dog carries his neck proudly<\/span>
and well arched when excited.<\/span><\/p>\n

BODY<\/span><\/strong>
Back : Strong and straight.<\/span>
Loin : Well muscled, taut, lean and narrower than the rib cage.<\/span>
Chest : Strong and moderately deep, but not too broad. The deepest <\/span>point of chest reaches just above the elbow, but same level with the <\/span>elbow is also acceptable. Ribs well sprung. Brisket well developed.<\/span>
Belly : Drawn up.<\/span>
TAIL<\/strong> : When let down, the tip of the tail should reach the hock. <\/span>Root rather set high, stands straight firmly and should not sway when <\/span>the dog moves. Sickle shaped or rolled, the end of the tail touching <\/span>the back or the flank. Should not be too curled. The tail is profusely <\/span>feathered.<\/span><\/p>\n

LIMBS<\/span><\/strong>
FOREQUARTERS<\/strong> :<\/span>
General appearance : Forelegs straight and parallel when viewed <\/span>from front.<\/span>
Shoulders : Strong and powerful and well laid back.<\/span>
Elbows: Close to the body, turned neither in nor out.<\/span>
Pastern : Slightly slanting forward when viewed from side.<\/span>
Forefeet : Cat feet. Toes rather short, roundish, compact and tight.<\/span>
Nails strong; black colour is preferred. Pads thick and wellcushioned.<\/span><\/p>\n

HINDQUARTERS<\/strong> :<\/span>
General appearance : When viewed from side, the hindlegs are <\/span>moderately angulated; when viewed from the rear, hindlegs stand <\/span>straight, parallel and neither too wide nor too close. <\/span>Dewclaws should be removed except in countries where their <\/span>removal is forbidden by law.<\/span>
Upper thighs : Well-developed.<\/span>
Stifle : Moderately angulated.<\/span>
Hocks : Well let down, not straight, moderately angulated.<\/span>
Hind feet : Identical with forefeet.<\/span><\/p>\n

GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/strong> : The gait of Korea Jindo Dog is powerful <\/span>and steady. The back should remain firm and level. He trots <\/span>carrying his head high, but when speed increases, the head is carried <\/span>rather low, almost at the level of the shoulders. The upper part of the <\/span>tail moves slightly according to the change of direction of the dog.<\/span><\/p>\n

COAT<\/span><\/strong>
HAIR<\/strong> : The Korea Jindo Dog has a double coat. Undercoat is soft, <\/span>dense, light in colour, but sufficient to support the outercoat. <\/span>Outercoat is stiff and stands somewhat off body. Comparing with the <\/span>hair of the body, the hair on head, legs and ears is shorter and the hair <\/span>on the neck, withers, back and rump is longer. The hair on tail and <\/span>back of thighs is longer than on the rest of the body.<\/span>
COLOUR<\/strong> : The colours of the Korea Jindo Dog are red fawn, <\/span>white, black, black and tan, wolf grey and brindle.<\/span><\/p>\n

SIZE AND WEIGHT :<\/span><\/strong>
Height at withers :<\/span>
Males : 50-55cm, ideal 53-54 cm.<\/span>
Bitches : 45-50 cm, ideal 48-49 cm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Weight :<\/span>
Males : 18 – 23 kg.<\/span>
Bitches : 15 – 19 kg.<\/span><\/p>\n

FAULTS<\/strong> : Any departure from the foregoing points should be<\/span>
considered as a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should<\/span>
be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect<\/span>
upon the health and welfare of the dog.<\/span>
\u2022 Not enough muscled.<\/span>
\u2022 Bones too thick or too fine.<\/span>
\u2022 Level bite.<\/span>
\u2022 Non-erect ears.<\/span>
\u2022 Dropping tail, short tail.<\/span>
\u2022 Overangulation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Straight hock, cow hock, barrel hock.<\/span>
\u2022 Long coat or short coat.<\/span>
\u2022 Choppy gait, stilted gait.<\/span><\/p>\n

DISQUALIFYING FAULTS :<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Aggressive or overly shy.<\/span>
\u2022 Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural<\/span>
abnormalities shall be disqualified.<\/span>
\u2022 Oversize, undersize.<\/span>
\u2022 Undershot, overshot.<\/span>
\u2022 Doggy bitch, bitchy dog.<\/span>
\u2022 More than 3 missing teeth.<\/span>
\u2022 Lack of pigment, albinism.<\/span><\/p>\n

N.B.:<\/span><\/strong>
\u2022 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles<\/span>
fully descended into the scrotum.<\/span>
\u2022 Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed<\/span>
typical conformation should be used for breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n
