The population of the town is 9,131 inhabitants, while the municipality has 23,391 inhabitants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">It is located 100\u00a0km (62\u00a0mi) south-east of\u00a0Belgrade, on the banks of the river\u00a0Resava, and bordering the river\u00a0Morava. Its name stems from the word for\u00a0silk\u00a0in Serbian.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span id=\"History\" class=\"mw-headline\">History<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"thumb tleft\">\n<div class=\"thumbinner\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a class=\"image\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:20090719-most-svilajnac-atipiks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbimage\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/b\/b4\/20090719-most-svilajnac-atipiks.jpg\/200px-20090719-most-svilajnac-atipiks.jpg\" srcset=\"\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/b\/b4\/20090719-most-svilajnac-atipiks.jpg\/300px-20090719-most-svilajnac-atipiks.jpg 1.5x, \/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/b\/b4\/20090719-most-svilajnac-atipiks.jpg\/400px-20090719-most-svilajnac-atipiks.jpg 2x\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" data-file-width=\"604\" data-file-height=\"403\" \/><\/a><\/span>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"thumbcaption\">\n<div class=\"magnify\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The Velika Morava Bridge<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Svilajnac was first mentioned in Ottoman records in 1467 as a village with a hundred households. The village, and later town, gained prominence through its silk production, from which it derives its name (<i>svila<\/i>, &#8220;silk&#8221;). Located in central Serbia, it flourished as a trading center, where silk, wool and livestock were traded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Svilajnac is the birthplace of the\u00a0First Serbian Uprising\u00a0revolutionary\u00a0Stevan Sin\u0111eli\u0107. A statue in his honor was raised in the central square of Svilajnac, in the pedestrian zone of\u00a0<i>Kriva \u010dar\u0161ija<\/i>. It was erected in 1991 after the design of sculptor Mihailo Paunovi\u0107. The bronze monument marks the decisive moment in the\u00a0Battle of \u010cegar, when Sin\u0111eli\u0107, standing in the trench shot the powder keg.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Politika_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In 1832 a hospital was established in Svilajnac, one of the first medical centers in this part of Serbia. Due to its architectural and historical importance, the building of the Old Hospital has been declared a cultural monument and placed under the state protection.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Politika_3-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Modern town began to develop on the location of the medieval village in 1820. It was based on the urban regulatory plan which consisted of four main streets:\u00a0<i>Prava \u010dar\u0161ija<\/i>\u00a0(today\u00a0<i>Saint Sava<\/i>\u00a0Street),\u00a0<i>Kriva \u010dar\u0161ija<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Gospodska<\/i>\u00a0(today\u00a0<i>Ustani\u010dka<\/i>\u00a0Street) and Resava Square (today Park of the European friendship).\u00a0<i>Kriva \u010dar\u0161ija<\/i>\u00a0is one of the best preserved ambient units in the town. It was later called\u00a0<i>Kneza Mihailova<\/i>, then\u00a0<i>Lenjinova<\/i>\u00a0after the\u00a0World War II, then\u00a0<i>Stevana Sin\u0111eli\u0107a<\/i>\u00a0before its original name was returned. Today it is the central pedestrian zone in Svilajnac.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Politika_3-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">On 29 June 1866 Prince\u00a0Mihailo Obrenovi\u0107\u00a0officially declared Svliajnac a\u00a0<i>varo\u0161ica<\/i>\u00a0(&#8220;small town&#8221;). In 1868 a library was open. The building previously belonged to Dimitrije Mita Isakovi\u0107, founder of the Resava Savings Bank, the first money institution in Svilajnac. The building was declared a cultural monument in 2001 and the library today holds 60,000 books and 9,000 non-book units. A\u00a0gymnasium\u00a0was open in 1877. The school building was also declared a cultural monument and was fully renovated in 2015.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Politika_3-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dobro do\u0161li u SVILAJNAC!\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/crY6TQhCWQU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Source: TvCentar<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In 1923 it was decided to erect the monument in honor of the soldiers from Svilajnac, killed in the\u00a0Balkan Wars\u00a0and\u00a0World War I\u00a0from 1912 to 1918. The foundation stone was laid in 1923 and the monument was dedicated on 27 October 1926.<sup id=\"cite_ref-sudbina_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The monument was designed by Slovene sculptor\u00a0Ivan Zajec\u00a0and the model for the bronze sculpture was a local woman Zora Milosavljevi\u0107 Bid\u017ei\u0107. There are several stories on her identity. A mythical ones, claim that Mara was a fighter in the Resava region against the Ottoman invasion in 14th century or a daughter of legendary\u00a0Jug Bogdan\u00a0who became a nun with her mother after the\u00a0Battle of Kosovo\u00a0in 1389. One of the plausible stories mentions Mara, a daughter of Kosovo migrant Joksa Resavac, from the period of the First Serbian Uprising, who fought the Turks with Sin\u0111eli\u0107 and the Resava\u00a0knez\u00a0Petar Jakovljevi\u0107 Er\u010di\u0107. Soon a cult of Mara Resavkinja developed and she was considered a symbol of maternity, freedom and life, with numerous songs being written about her. Monument shows Mara holding a torch in the right hand and laurel wreath in the left. Under her feet are the trumpet and a drum, symbols of monarchy. Because of this, a representative of the\u00a0King Alexander\u00a0on the monument&#8217;s dedication left the ceremony. Due to this symbolism, the monument was attacked and finally in 1934 it was decided to demolish it.<sup id=\"cite_ref-prica_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Actually, mayor of Svilajnac Mihajlo R. Milenkovi\u0107 officially pleaded for the figure to be replaced with some other, &#8220;more appropriate&#8221;, so the demolition was announced on 3 October 1934, but\u00a0ban\u00a0of the\u00a0Morava Banovina\u00a0nullified the decision of the town&#8217;s administration on 26 October.<sup id=\"cite_ref-sudbina_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0King Alexander was assassinated in the meantime (9 October), situation in the state became unstable, followed by the breakout of the\u00a0World War II, so the monument survived.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Politika_3-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0However, it was destroyed during the World War II. The local\u00a0\u010cetniks&#8217; unit knocked down the bronze figure and melted it into the hand grenades. After the war, citizens decided to rebuild the monument. Sculptor\u00a0Lojze Dolinar\u00a0used the surviving Zajec&#8217;s molds to cast the identical figure which was unveiled on 29 November 1951.<sup id=\"cite_ref-prica_5-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">From 1929 to 1941, Svilajnac was part of the Morava Banovina of the\u00a0Kingdom of Yugoslavia. During the\u00a0Interbellum\u00a0a building of the\u00a0Sokol\u00a0Hall &#8220;Du\u0161an Silni&#8221; was constructed. It was reconstructed in 2012 and adapted into the cultural center.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Politika_3-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">One of the largest buildings in town is the Agricultural and veterinary school, with the campus &#8220;Svilajnac&#8221;, built in 1957.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Politika_3-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">On 3 September 2007 there was a\u00a0Democratic Party\u00a0initiative to depose the president of the municipality Dobrivoje Budimirovic &#8220;Bid\u017ea&#8221; (Serbian Radical Party). It failed, partially due to the opposition of the\u00a0Democratic Party of Serbia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The town was damaged during the\u00a02014 Southeast Europe floods.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Politika_3-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In 2015 a Natural History Center of Serbia, 3,000\u00a0m<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0(32,000\u00a0sq\u00a0ft), was open in Svilajnac. It became a major tourist attraction in the entire region, mostly due to its exhibition of dinosaur remains in the Dino Park. The center is located close to the downtown and the\u00a0<i>Kriva \u010dar\u0161ija<\/i>. Out of 20 dinosaur replicas, the largest is\u00a0Diplodocus, 11\u00a0m (36\u00a0ft) tall and 20\u00a0m (66\u00a0ft) long.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Politika_3-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span id=\"Economy\" class=\"mw-headline\">Economy<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Apart from commercial services, Svilajnac&#8217;s economy is largely dependent on agricultural activities. Svilajnac has developed two fully equipped industrial zones.\u00a0One of the facilities is of\u00a0Panasonic\u00a0since 2011.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Politika_3-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">During the existence of SFR Yugoslavia, the\u00a0state-owned\u00a0companies contributed substantially to the local economy, until the 1990s, when international sanctions imposed on FR Yugoslavia lead to the massive closure of the companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">As of September 2017, Svilajnac has one of 14\u00a0free economic zones\u00a0established in Serbia.<sup id=\"cite_ref-srbeconomiczone2017_9-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<dl>\n<dt><span style=\"color: #000000; During the\u00a0Second World War, the original bridge was destroyed by the retreating\u00a0Yugoslav Army. After the war, the bridge was rebuilt with German war reparations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Svilajnac is also the location of a\u00a0coal power plant. Built in 1969, only several hundred meters upriver from the bridge, it has an energy output of 125 MW.
