It lies 400 m above sea-level and is 230 km from Belgrade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The therapeutic qualities of Sokobanja\u2019s thermal springs were known as far back as Ancient Rome. The Sokobanja public\u00a0<i>hamam<\/i>\u00a0\u2013 steam bath \u2013 was first mentioned by Turkish travel writer Evliya \u00e7elebi in 1663. After the liberation from the Turks,\u00a0<b>Prince Milo\u0161<\/b>\u00a0ordered the renovation of the\u00a0<i>hamam\u00a0<\/i>and built a residence (konak), and Leopold Erlich was appointed as the spa\u2019s first doctor. The start of organised tourism in Sokobanja can be traced back to 1837 when the office of Prince Milo\u0161 issued a referral (\u2018voucher\u2019) to warrant officer Lazarevi\u0107 to have treatment in the spa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sokobanja - Green Heart of Serbia\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5DGrcZ17FRw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Source: Dusan Stojancevic &#8211; Creative Light<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">At the beginning of the 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century wealthy traders and innkeepers built villas for their own stays in Sokobanja, but they were also used to accommodate guests. During the inter-war period the first contemporary spa hotel \u2013 Evropa (today\u2019s Park konak) \u2013 was built, parks and picnic sites laid and waterworks and public lighting installed. The modern development of Sokobanja began in the 1960s with businesses springing up next to the hotels and the transport infrastructure being updated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The natural therapeutic factors in Sokobanja are the thermal mineral springs (with temperatures ranging from 28 to 45.5\u00b0C), which are used for bathing and inhalation, and the moderate continental climate characterised by favourable atmospheric pressure, moderate rainfall, little fog and a few windy days, a high concentration of oxygen, ozone and negative ions in the air and an absence of air pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Treatment is administered in the\u00a0<b>Sokobanja Specialised Hospital for Non-Specific Lung Diseases<\/b>, the\u00a0<b>Banjica Natural Health Resort<\/b>\u00a0and the\u00a0<b>Ozren Specialised Lung Diseases Hospital<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>The following are treated in Sokobanja:<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">bronchial asthma<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">chronic hepatitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">psychoneurosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">neurasthenia<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">mild high blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">chronic rheumatism and sciatica<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">post-injury conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">anaemia<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">chronic gynaecological conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The Sokobanja Specialised Hospital contains a thermal mineral water swimming pool, a gym, a small sports hall and a five-a-side football pitch. Visitors to Sokobanja can also enjoy walks in a spacious and beautiful park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The\u00a0<b>Library<\/b>\u00a0in Sokobanja has existed for over 130 years and has over 30,000 books and an international centre for tourism and ecological documentation. The\u00a0<b>Heritage Museum<\/b>\u00a0houses archaeological, ethnological and historical items. In front of the museum there is an amphitheatre which is used during summer to stage theatre productions and literary evenings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A wide variety of\u00a0<b>sporting, cultural and tourist events<\/b>\u00a0are held in Sokobanja throughout the year, including the First Accordion of Sokobanja, the International Ecological Cartoon Biennale, Sokograd Art Colony, the Golden Hands of Sokobanja, Saint Jovan Biljober and Spa Summer of Culture among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">During summer, guests can\u00a0<b>bathe<\/b>\u00a0at managed bathing sites on the Moravica river, Bovansko Jezero lake and the artificial lake in the Moravica Klisura gorge, which are also ideal for fishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Sokobanja\u2019s guests also have the chance to go hunting, as well as go on specialised hunting trips such as camera safari, picking medicinal plants and hunting combined with a stay in an old mountain lodge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The surrounding area of Sokobanja has many picnic sites and forest and tarmac paths lead to\u00a0<b>O\u0161tra \u010cuka<\/b>, Ozren mountain&#8217;s highest peak (1117 m). Trails on Ozren lead to the\u00a0<b>Jermen\u010di\u0107<\/b>\u00a0<b>monastery<\/b>, the ruins of the Tatomirov Grad fortress and the 580m-long Ozrenska Pe\u0107ina cave. The 11m-high\u00a0<b>Ripaljka\u00a0<\/b>waterfall, formed by the Grada\u0161nica river, is also nearby. The \u0110er\u0111elez spring, which was known as far back as the Turkish period, is concealed in the meadows on Ozren. Not far from the\u00a0<b>Lepterija<\/b>\u00a0picnic site lie the remains of the\u00a0<b>Soko Grad<\/b>\u00a0(Falcon City) fortress. Vrmad\u017eanski Grad fortress is located 2 km from Rtanj and Vrmd\u017eanski Jezero lake, which is ideal for fishing, is also nearby.
