SVRLJIG<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Svrljig<\/b> (Serbian Cyrillic: \u0421\u0432\u0440\u0459\u0438\u0433<\/span>, <\/small>[s\u028b\u0159\u0329\u028ei\u02d0\u0261]<\/span>) is a town and municipality located in the Ni\u0161ava District of the southern Serbia. According to 2011 census, the town has a population of 7,553 inhabitants, while the municipality has 14,249.<\/span><\/p>\n Svrljig is situated on the river Svrlji\u0161ki Timok, 30 km east from Ni\u0161, the third largest city in Serbia. Nearby villages include Crnoljevica and Prekonoga.<\/span><\/p>\n An anthropological study by Mihailo Kosti\u0107 claimed that the Svrljig province was inhabited by mostly an “olden” population, while part descends from “colonists from the second half of the 15th century”. According to Petar Vlahovi\u0107, Svrljig is part of the Serbian \u0160opi ethnographical region.<\/span><\/p>\n Svrljig was the name of a \u017eupa<\/i> (county) in the Middle Ages. It is mentioned (for the first time) in the geographical list of counties and cities in the 1019\u201320 charters of Byzantine Emperor Basil II. The settlement and its surrounding region is mentioned as part of the Eparchy of Ni\u0161. In 1183, Svrljig and other nearby fortifications were taken over by Serbian Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja. The fortification mostly dates to the medieval Serbian period. It was situated on the road which connected Ni\u0161 with the road to Constantinople. A evangelion manuscript written in Svrljig in the Serbian redaction of Old Slavic dating to 1279 is preserved in fragments. After the fall of Brani\u010devo under the Serbian king Stefan Milutin in 1290s Svrljig became a border region. Svrljig was conquered and plundered in 1413 by Ottoman prince Musa \u00c7elebi. It was then part of Stefan Lazarevi\u0107’s Serbian Despotate.<\/span><\/p>\n The town was known as Isferlik<\/i> and Isfirlig<\/i> in Ottoman Turkish.
