GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/span><\/strong>: Of medium height, clean in outline, <\/span>elegant in appearance and movement.<\/span><\/div>\n
\n

BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT:<\/strong> Very active with a keen game <\/span>sense. Intensely friendly and good natured.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n
HEAD<\/span><\/strong>: Carried high; long and reasonably lean.<\/span><\/div>\n
CRANIAL REGION: <\/span>Skull : Oval from ear to ear, showing plenty of bra <\/span>in room; occipital <\/span>protuberance well-defined.<\/span><\/div>\n
Stop: Well defined.<\/span><\/div>\n
FACIAL REGION :<\/span><\/div>\n
Nose: Colour of nose black or liver, according to <\/span>colour of coat. <\/span>Nostrils wide.<\/span><\/div>\n
Muzzle : Moderately deep and fairly square, from st<\/span>op to point of <\/span>nose should be equal to length of skull from occipu<\/span>t to eyes.<\/span><\/div>\n
Lips : Not too pendulous.<\/span><\/div>\n
Jaws\/Teeth : Jaws strong and of nearly equal length<\/span>, with a perfect,<\/span>regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth <\/span>closely overlapping <\/span>the lower teeth and set square to the jaws. Full de<\/span>ntition desirable.<\/span><\/div>\n
Eyes : Bright, mild and expressive. Colour ranging <\/span>between hazel <\/span>and dark brown, the darker the better. In liver bel<\/span>tons only, a lighter <\/span>eye acceptable. Eyes oval and not protruding.<\/span><\/div>\n

Ears : Moderate length, set on low, and hanging in <\/span>neat folds close to <\/span>cheek, tip velvety, upper part clothed in fine silk<\/span>y hair.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

NECK<\/span><\/strong>: Rather long, muscular and lean, slightly arched a<\/span>t crest, and <\/span>clean cut where it joins head, towards shoulder lar<\/span>ger and very <\/span>muscular, never throaty nor pendulous below throat, <\/span>but elegant in <\/span>appearance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

BODY<\/span><\/strong>: Moderate length.<\/span><\/div>\n
Back : Short and level.<\/span><\/div>\n
Loin : Wide, slightly arched, strong and muscular.<\/span><\/div>\n
Chest : Deep in brisket, very good depth and width <\/span>between shoulder <\/span>blades. Ribs good round, widely sprung and deep in <\/span>back ribs, i.e. <\/span>well ribbed up.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

TAIL<\/span><\/strong>: Set almost in line with back, medium length, not <\/span>reaching <\/span>below hock, neither curly nor ropy, slightly curved<\/span><\/div>\n
or scimitar-<\/span>shaped but with no tendency to turn upwards : flag <\/span>or feathers <\/span>hanging in long pendant flakes. Feather commencing <\/span>slightly below <\/span>the root, and increasing in length towards middle, <\/span>then gradually <\/span>tapering towards end; hair long, bright, soft and s<\/span>ilky, wavy but not <\/span>curly. Lively and slashing in movement and carried <\/span>in a plane not<\/span><\/div>\n

GAIT \/ MOVEMENT<\/span><\/strong>: Free and graceful action, suggesting speed <\/span>and endurance. Free movement of the hock showing po<\/span>werful drive <\/span>from hindquarters. Viewed from rear, hip, stifle a<\/span>nd hock joints in <\/span>line. Head naturally high.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hair<\/span>: From back of head in line with ears slightly wav<\/span>y, not curly, <\/span>long and silky, as is coat generally, breeches and<\/span><\/div>\n

forelegs nearly <\/span>down to feet well feathered.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

COLOUR<\/span><\/strong>: Black and white (blue belton), orange and white <\/span>(orange <\/span>belton), lemon and white (lemon belton), liver and <\/span>white (liver <\/span>belton) or tricolour, that is blue belton and tan o<\/span>r liver belton and tan, <\/span>those without heavy patches of colour on body but f<\/span>lecked (belton) <\/span>all over preferred.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Belton is a village <\/span>in Northumberland. <\/span>This expression has been created and spread out by <\/span>the book about <\/span>the English Setter written by Mr. Edward Lavarack, <\/span>breeder who has <\/span>had a preponderant influence upon the actual appear<\/span>ance of the <\/span>breed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
