BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY<\/span><\/div>\n
: The Rottweiler is considered to be one of the oldest dog breeds. Its origin goes back to Roman<\/span><\/div>\n
times. These dogs were kept as herder or driving dogs. They marched over the Alps with<\/span><\/div>\n
the Roman legions, protecting the humans and driving their cattle. In the region <\/span><\/div>\n
of Rottweil, these dogs met and mixed with the native dogs in a natural crossing.<\/span><\/div>\n
The main task of the Rottweiler now became the driving and guarding of<\/span><\/div>\n
the herds of cattle and the defence of their masters and their property. This breed<\/span><\/div>\n
acquired its name from the old free city of Rottweil and was known as<\/span><\/div>\n
the \u00ab Rottweil butcher\u2019s dog\u2019 \u00bb. The butchers bred this type of dog<\/span><\/div>\n
purely for performance and usefulness. In due course, a first rate<\/span><\/div>\n
watch and driving dog evolved which could also be used as a draught<\/span><\/div>\n
dog. When, at the beginning of the twentieth century, various breeds<\/span><\/div>\n
were needed for police service, the Rottweiler was amongst those<\/span><\/div>\n
tested. It soon became evident that the breed was highly suitable for<\/span><\/div>\n
the tasks set by police service and therefore theywere officially<\/span><\/div>\n
recognized as police dogs in 1910.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated<\/span><\/div>\n
with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance<\/span><\/div>\n
does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being<\/span><\/div>\n
a companion, service and working dog.<\/span><\/div>\n
GENERAL APPEARANCE<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
: The Rottweiler is a medium to large<\/span><\/div>\n
size, stalwart dog, neither heavy nor light and neither leggy nor<\/span><\/div>\n
weedy. His correctly proportioned, compact and powerful build leads<\/span><\/div>\n
to the conclusion of great strength, agility and endurance.<\/span><\/div>\n
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
: The length of the body, measuredfrom the point of the sternum (breast-bone) to the<\/span><\/div>\n
ischiatic tuberosity, should not exceed the height at the withers by, at<\/span><\/div>\n
most, 15 %.<\/span><\/div>\n
BEHAVIOUR \/ TEMPERAMENT<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
: Good-natured, placid in basicdisposition and fond of children, very devoted, <\/span><\/div>\n
obedient, biddable and eager to work. His appearance is natural and rustic, his behaviour<\/span><\/div>\n
self-assured, steady and fearless. He reacts to his surroundings with<\/span><\/div>\n
great alertness.<\/span><\/div>\n
HEAD<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
CRANIAL REGION :<\/span><\/div>\n
Skull : Of medium length, broad between the ears.<\/span><\/div>\n
Forehead line moderately arched as seen from the side. Occipital<\/span><\/div>\n
bone well developed without being conspicuous.<\/span><\/div>\n
Stop : Well defined.<\/span><\/div>\n
FACIAL REGION :<\/span><\/div>\n
Nose : Well developed, more broad than round with relatively large<\/span><\/div>\n
nostrils, always black.<\/span><\/div>\n
Muzzle : The foreface should appear neither elongated nor shortened<\/span><\/div>\n
in relation to the cranial region. Straight nasal bridge, broad at base,<\/span><\/div>\n
moderately tapered.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span>Lips : Black, close fitting, corner of the mouth not visible, gum as<\/span><\/div>\n
dark as possible.<\/span><\/div>\n
Jaws\/Teeth : Upper and lower jaw strong and broad. Strong, complete<\/span><\/div>\n
dentition (42 teeth) with scissor bite, the upper incisors closely<\/span><\/div>\n
overlapping the lower incisors.<\/span><\/div>\n
Cheeks : Zygomatic arches pronounced.<\/span><\/div>\n
Eyes : Of medium size, almond-shaped, dark brown in<\/span><\/div>\n
colour.<\/span><\/div>\n
Eyelids close fitting.<\/span><\/div>\n
Ears : Medium-sized, pendant, triangular, wide apart, set on high.<\/span><\/div>\n
With the ears laid forward close to the head, the skull appears o be<\/span><\/div>\n
broadened.<\/span><\/div>\n
NECK<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
: Strong, of fair length, well muscled, slightly arched, clean,<\/span><\/div>\n
free from throatiness, without dewlap.<\/span><\/div>\n
BODY<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

Back : Straight, strong, firm.<\/span><\/div>\n
Loins : Short, strong and deep.<\/span><\/div>\n
Croup : Broad, of medium length, slightly rounded.<\/span><\/div>\n
Neither flat nor falling away.<\/span><\/div>\n
Chest : Roomy, broad and deep (approximately 50 % of the shoulder<\/span><\/div>\n
height) with well developed forechest and well sprung ribs.<\/span><\/div>\n
Belly : Flanks not tucked up.<\/span><\/div>\n
TAIL<\/strong> : In natural condition, level in extension of the upper line;<\/span><\/div>\n
at ease may be hanging.<\/span><\/div>\n
LIMBS<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
FOREQUARTERS : Seen from the front, the front legsare straight<\/span><\/div>\n
and not placed too closely to each other. The forearm, seen from the<\/span><\/div>\n
side, stands straight and vertical. The slope of the shoulder blade is<\/span><\/div>\n
about 45 degrees to the horizontal.<\/span><\/div>\n
Shoulders : Well laid back.<\/span><\/div>\n
Upper arm : Close fitting to the body.<\/span><\/div>\n
Forearm : Strongly developed and muscular.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span>Pasterns : Slightly springy, strong, not steep.<\/span><\/div>\n
Front feet : Round, tight and well arched; pads hard; nails short, black<\/span><\/div>\n
and strong.<\/span><\/div>\n
HINDQUARTERS : Seen from behind, legs straight and not too close<\/span><\/div>\n
together. When standing free, obtuse angles are formed between the<\/span><\/div>\n
dog\u2019s upper thigh and the hip bone, the upper thigh and the lower<\/span><\/div>\n
thigh, and the lower thigh and metatarsal.<\/span><\/div>\n
Upper thigh : Moderately long, broad and strongly m<\/span><\/div>\n
uscled.<\/span><\/div>\n
Lower thigh : Long, strongly and broadly muscled, s<\/span><\/div>\n
inewy.<\/span><\/div>\n
Hocks : Sturdy, well angulated hocks; not steep.<\/span><\/div>\n
Hindfeet : Slightly longer than the front feet. To<\/span><\/div>\n

GAIT<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
: The Rottweiler is a trotting dog. In movement the back<\/span><\/div>\n
remains firm and relatively stable. Movement harmonious, steady,<\/span><\/div>\n
full of energy and unrestricted, with good stride.<\/span><\/div>\n
SKIN<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
: Skin on the head : overall tight fitting. When the dog is alert,<\/span><\/div>\n
the forehead may be slightly wrinkled.<\/span><\/div>\n
COAT<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
HAIR : The coat consists of a top coat and an undercoat. The top coat<\/span><\/div>\n
is of medium length, coarse, dense and flat. The undercoat must not<\/span><\/div>\n
show through the top coat. The hair is a little longer on the hindlegs.<\/span><\/div>\n
COLOUR : Black with clearly defined markings of a rich tan on the<\/span><\/div>\n
cheeks, muzzle, throat, chest and legs, as well as over both eyes and<\/span><\/div>\n
under the base of the tail.<\/span><\/div>\n
SIZE AND WEIGHT<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

Height at withers : For males is 61 – 68 cm.<\/span><\/div>\n
61 – 62 cm is small<\/span><\/div>\n
63 – 64 cm medium height.<\/span><\/div>\n
65 – 66 cm is large – correct height<\/span><\/div>\n
67 – 68 cm very large.<\/span><\/div>\n
Weight : 50 kg.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span>Height at withers : For bitches is 56 – 63 cm.<\/span><\/div>\n
56 – 57 cm is small<\/span><\/div>\n

masculine bitches.<\/span><\/div>\n

Teeth : Overshot or undershot bite, wry mouth; lack of one<\/span><\/div>\n
incisive tooth, one canine, one premolar or one molar.<\/span><\/div>\n

Eyes : Entropion, ectropion, yellow eyes, different coloured eyes.<\/span><\/div>\n

Tail : Kink tail, ring-tail, with strong lateral deviation.<\/span><\/div>\n

Hair : Definitely long or wavy coat.<\/span><\/div>\n

Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities shall be disqualified.<\/span><\/div>\n
N.B.<\/span><\/div>\n
: Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully<\/span><\/div>\n
